I tend to ignore sensible advice as well. It does not help that I'm just not having too many ill effects from running. Every time I go out I want to go longer and faster.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 October 2009 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

Smart run today, just a slow one along the cliffs, air was cool and still but the sun was bright. Birds were queuing up along the top waiting to launch themselves across the Channel for the winter. Listened to the 'Sky of Honey' disc of Aerial, took my time, did about 12 miles. Up again with the neighbour tomorrow, going out on the Downs, really looking forward to it. Man, I'm loving running so much at the moment.

Ran the Pumpkins in the Park 5K today. My goal was to get in under 25 minutes, but I made it in 23:48, which is a PR. I was basically cursing myself the whole time for making myself run hard. Regardless I got faster each mile, which is really quite amazing for me. Usually I'm a start fast and fade away type of guy.

Jeff, Saturday, 17 October 2009 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

I'm really looking forward to a nice and easy longish run tomorrow.

Jeff, Saturday, 17 October 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

Nice going Jeff, those short distances are really brutal. That whole feeling of wanting to puke as you cross the line... Must be doing some good, right?

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 18 October 2009 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

Tell me about it. I lined up between the 8 and 9 minute milers. For my 5k next weekI'm just going to pace myself with the 7 minute milers to see if I can break 23 minutes.

After that I've got two 8k's. The "Turkey Trot" and the "Rudolph Ramble". Ha.

Jeff, Sunday, 18 October 2009 15:00 (sixteen years ago)

I'm amassing quite the collection of technical shirts by participating in all these races.

Jeff, Sunday, 18 October 2009 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

I've got the "Mince Pie 10" coming up soon! You always get ugly and hueg cotton t-shirts after races in the UK, always go straight in the charity bag.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

Ran another 5K today, finished in 23:05, about 40 seconds faster than last weekend. It was cold and rainy, so not as many people at this event. I finished 25 out of 412. Surprising.

This is in the fashion/fitness section, so make of it what you will

Dr. Robert M. Conenello, a sports podiatrist who tended to contestants of a multiday race in the Sahara. “A lot of them look at their toenails as useless appendages, remnants of claws from evolutionary times long ago. I’ve heard them say, ‘Toenails are dead weight.’ ”

fully agree with this guy

“You know any sport has gone off the rails when you have to remove body parts to do it,” said Christopher McDougall, the author of a recent book about ultrarunning called “Born to Run.”

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 26 October 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

i'm going to remove my toenails and replace them with sardines

Mr. Que, Monday, 26 October 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

that's a convenient way to carry foodstuffs when you're running

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 26 October 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

time for a break

Mr. Que, Monday, 26 October 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

I've actually had part of a toenail treated so it doesn't grow because of a persistent ingrown toenail. This has not affected my ultra marathoning times.

I got to 75 miles for October yesterday, completing all three of my goals for the month. I'm not sure what I should do for the rest of the month, I'd like to run more miles next month, so I don't want to set the bar to high in a month that will have some crappy weather.

Jeff, Monday, 26 October 2009 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

And October is over. My best running month ever. I can't wait to try and beat all my numbers in November.

coz (webinar), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

ran tonight, just a quick two miles before dinner, felt good

coz (webinar), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

Nice one Jeff. 16 miler for me today in hideous weather - thick fog, rain coming down like bullets, and a furious headwind that felt like it was trying to rip the shirt from my shoulders. Last two miles were so bad, just wanted to lay down in a ditch to die. Knees are a bit shot, headphones have died of drowning again.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

I killed my Shuffle running in the rain the other night... It's the clip on version, so I had to order a refurb.

Jeff, Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

Obviously been shying away from faster runs, need to start working on that.

uh sorry

plaks (I know, right?), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:32 (sixteen years ago)

Hey, Plax is back! Hope things are going well.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

For November, I want to do more intervals and hills (well, hill. There's only one that's close to me in Chicago). Also, I think I could stand to be about 15 pounds lighter, but that ain't going to happen anytime soon.

Jeff, Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

Sure it will if you keep putting in the miles.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

tipping away! xp

plaks (I know, right?), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

i have been doing intervals for the past few weeks, trying to break through a weight plateau. i realized this week, as i cut through a park, that trails are so much more comfortable than sidewalk/pavement, so i'm thinking of exploring more area parks in the next few weeks. also realized that uphills are not bothering my shins as much as downhills, so i think i will try to be less timid about them from now on.

tehresa, Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

Are your shin troubles getting any better yet?

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 1 November 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

somewhat. i stuck to elliptical and stationary bike for like 2 weeks until i couldn't take it any more and then eased back into running. i still get some pains, but i think it is slowly getting better. stretching helps a little but it's an awkard place to try to stretch, and not pushing too hard is something i try to remember. i try to alternate days running and using the elliptical trainer, but i've started to really hate the elliptical. it's frustrating! i can't do the distances i want, and i get really antsy.

tehresa, Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

I've really taken a step back in terms of speeds and distances in the switch to morning running, I'm much slower and stiffer and eager to get home and warm up in the morning. Also more likely to look outside, decide the weather looks grim, and go back to sleep, which is why I didn't make the 75 mile monthly goal (ended at 71). I'm sure November weather will remain a challenge but I hope the time change and lighter early mornings will help, I'd just like to really establish a 20 mile a week base next month.

Maria, Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

i actually decided i don't mind the rain at all, but i get really paranoid about slipping on wet leaves or wet metal.

tehresa, Monday, 2 November 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

i don't mind running in the rain late in the day but somehow i can rarely force myself to get out of bed and do it! wet leaves can be slippery, but it's going to be a real problem with ice, i think.

Maria, Monday, 2 November 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

i ran for 30 mins today, second run this week. debating whether to start running again. i just... man it feels good to me for about 15 minutes out of any run, then i just barely tolerate it.

i shld stay around and get inspired

bitter about emo (Hunt3r), Monday, 2 November 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

what i like is that it is pretty time efficient.

bitter about emo (Hunt3r), Monday, 2 November 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

back on with a mile and a half to two miles for the past three days, gonna move at this pace for the rest of the month and amp up REAL slow this time.

I AM NOT ONE TO PURSUE GAME, MY FRIEND - NO, INDEED. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 November 2009 03:25 (sixteen years ago)

Just bought a heart monitor so I can be a bit more scientific in my training. Gonna try and find out my max heart rate on the run home tonight, slightly concerned though that my heart will actually physically explode.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:50 (sixteen years ago)

oh man i've wanted one for a long time! someday.

Peepoop Patel (harbl), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

getting a lot better at the looooooong hill on my route. it's good.

Peepoop Patel (harbl), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

On long hills I just try and relax as much as possible, and just be patient.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

yeah and loosen my legs

plaks (I know, right?), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i just slow down.

had my first decent morning run this year (standard for "decent" being "i didn't hate it and want to die"). maybe because i'm getting used to the change, maybe because i took some ibuprofen for an unrelated problem before i left...my fingers are crossed that more and more will be like this.
