I scrolled down too fast and thought I saw that guy's moustache twitching.

We can talk about the artifice of manliness, if you want. I think it exists, although maybe in less obvious ways, since so much female artifice has to do with clothes and makeup.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I think we should define terms before we discuss, just to make sure we're all on the same page. Are artifices of gender things we wear/display to announce and reinforce our gender, based on societal concepts man/woman?

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I SAID "MAKE SURE WE'RE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE."

My life is a lie.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I usually wear pants. When I'm not wearing pants, chances are I'm in my bathrobe or asleep.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

OR GETTIN' IT ON

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

STRAIGHT NOGGIN' IT

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you know what I'm talkin about

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I felt horrible for Lauren Bacall. She is so beautiful and smart.. but didn't wear her glasses! Come on, woman! Be strong! Glasses are beautiful too!

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Is that what her problem was? I felt bad for her, too. She is one of my favorite "classic" actresses. I thought she was just old and shaky.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I felt bad for the woman (don't know who she was, some "normal" woman who won for screenwriting or tech or something) who had a big lipstick smooch on her face, and then got cut off right when she started to speak. It was her big moment and she was probably all embarassed when she saw the tape.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Hey, the Oscar shorts are showing at the Siskel this week. Might go tonight.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I felt horrible for Lauren Bacall. She is so beautiful and smart.. but didn't wear her glasses!

i assumed that she was wearing the goggles.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Submit that signifiers of manliness are in doing/being, while those of womanliness are in looking/appearing. Ie to be a "real man" one should be financially/professionally successful and able to support family; remain in control of emotions at all times; etc etc etc.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Come back with reviews, Eazy!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking forward to Martin McDonagh's 'Six Shooter' (also the short that one last night). He's a great playwright - I didn't know 'til the New Yorker profile last week that he wrote all of his plays in 9 months in 1994 and hasn't written any since.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I saw one ('Cashback') last week online and thought it was kinda dumb. Very well-done and professional, yes, and it DID have gratuitous nudity, but still.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to tell you guys something! Dan's friend from IA is Ge0rge R0m3ro's manager (in some capacity) and GR was here for a horror convention and D. totally got to hang out with GR in his hotel room. How cool is that? I thought the horror buffs among us would be amused. He (GR) had bronchitis and felt like crap, but managed to make it through the q&a and hundreds of fan-people.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

No Grizzlyman, no cred.

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

And Wilderness rocks.

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:48 (twenty years ago)

That is REALLY COOL, Amanda. I bet Maddie would have wanted to go to that convention had she known.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Isn't that neat? He got a photo with him and everything, with the crazy glasses and him being all 8 feet tall. I didn't get to go, since I was in class. :(

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Did he get any anecdotes or gossip?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, well -- mostly they talked about his ailments, I think. Also, GR was disappointed by King Kong. That's not exactly breaking news though.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Ha, okay. We started watching Day of the Dead the other night, to be followed by the completely unauthorized and awful-looking DAY OF THE DEAD 2: CONTAGION.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Ok, this just in from Dan:
George also discussed how the Dead series might end, although Dan said that he (G) was lukewarm about the idea: Zombies and humans make peace.

Imagine that! Also, he "has a few more zombie movies in him." The end.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but I thought it was hilarious and a little relevant to the Oscar talk above:

Walker, Brokeback Ranger

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

They should collaborate on Sheriff Versus The Zombies.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, that IS good zombie gossip.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

i don't really care about zombie movies, but leaf does. also: i love the phrase "zombie gossip."

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Band name!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I think it sounds better as an album title than a band name, but yeah!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

The new Zombie Gossip album is Sexual Ethical Advice: Virgin Involved.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

I've decided that the only way to deal with getting an award and keep your dignity is to not show up (a la Woody Allen), turn it down (a la George C. Scott), or turn it down in a totally ridiculous show of absurdity (a la Marlon Brando). Everyone else can just stop pretending like they're an "artist."

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:32 (twenty years ago)

i suspect that there is a dwindling number of people that care about dignity in the first place.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

But they are artists. A lot of them, anyway.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

How about 1) accepting it, saying "Thanks!" and cutting out, or 2) using your 30 seconds of podium time to say something totally irrelevant, like tell a joke or recommend a record?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I actually like it when people say something more political. Like the penguin guys!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

But they are artists. A lot of them, anyway.

-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), March 6th, 2006 2:39 PM. (jaymc) (later)

No.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Who's an artist if Clooney isn't?

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Picasso? Vincent Gallo?

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

I tend to agree with Nick. For the most part, at best, they're pretty faces.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

An ugly face couldn't do a better job directing Good Night and Good Luck.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why people complain about the length of the speeches, I almost always find them pretty entertaining. Except when they're just thanking a string of names that don't mean anything, that can be kinda annoying, yeah. But there was far less of that this year than in years past. It strikes me that the people who want winners to just go up and say thanks and get off stage don't really love the Oscars. You don't have to watch it, you know.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

True - where's the dignity in watching the Oscars? The most dignified thing to do is not watch. I was at Schubas with the FFs drummer, personally.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Also, Eric OTM about Clooney. I dunno, I mean if the Oscars were like All Jessica Alba All the Time, then I could concede your point. But just because they're famous doesn't mean they're not talented.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying they're not talented, I'm saying they're not artists.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:58 (twenty years ago)

FITE

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

What the hell are they then? Are YOU an artist?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

I am the last one to argue about films, because I usually dislike them. But for the record:

I tend to agree with Nick. For the most part, at best, they're pretty faces.

-- Steely Df'nM (thedanmarti...), Today.

I have seen exactly zero of the films nominated for Best Picture (or, as far as I know, any other Oscar.) This is a consequence of a long, drawn-out embittering process I have undergone do to having parents that didn't love me (or loved me too much, depending on your opinion) and made me read books instead of going to the movies.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

do = due
