14 Mission Bus in the middle of summer - two sweaty, filthy tweakers get on, one with no shirt (and no teeth) and long mangled black hair. Shirtless tweaker is ogling passing women out the window, shouting sexual innuendos at clearly underage teenage girls etc.
dunno how his bus ride ended, I got off a couple stops later.

― sarahel, Thursday, 8 October 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)
I won't say much or mind overmuch if you're off your meds, but it's when you think it wise to repeatedly say shit about black people when there are like 5 or 6 black dudes near you that I know you're seriously a danger to yourself and others. I was pretty happy that we just made him get off 'cause I wouldn't at all have been surprised if some one had beaten his ass.

well I've been riding the bus at least 2xday for 10+ years so ... um... yeah
I don't really ride it on the weekends anymore tho (now that I have a car and a baby), which has definitely cut down on the crazy. Mostly I only take the 27 and the 9 these days, which are fairly mellow.

On the 6 or 71, I get Haight-bound tourists, highschool students, commuters, etc... It can be pretty heteroclite.

yeah see for me the weirdest thing was when those black guys literally kicked him off the bus... y'know, people cheered. And the black guys were all proud and strutting and bragging about it. While my feelings about it were pretty mixed. I mean, sure the guy was being a jerk but he was also clearly unbalanced, and its not like ganging up on him took any real bravery or anything... and I'm kinda not down with people beating each other in general... it left a bad taste in my mouth.

I had to take the 71 and 6 (or is it the N-bus at that point?) late at night when I lived in SF - there were regular crazies that I've unfortunately forgotten
― sarahel, Thursday, 8 October 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)
The guy who was on my bus was a tweaker, to be fair, but he just uttered a string of malicious invective like he was looking to for a confrontation and I just couldn't put up with it anymore. The dudes that kicked him off weren't just the black dudes, though one old black guy precipitated it by basically saying, "That's it. No more of this shit. You gotta get off the bus right now." A bunch of us just stood up, including a gay couple one whom loooked well-pissed, to back him up and the tweaker went from confrontational to sheepish. It was just one of those days when you're on the bus reading quietly, waiting to get home and the anti-social shit just becomes unbearable.

then there was the time some teenage black guys were shooting spitballs at the passengers in front of them. most everyone ignored them. one hit me in the back of the head and I kinda nonchalantly tossed it back in their direction, which prompted lots of "oh no he dint" and threats and the one kid who'd aimed it ran up to my seat. So he's standing over me, yelling at me about do I wanna start something or not. I try to keep calm (I'm the adult in this situation after all) and told him to shut the fuck up and go sit down. oddly, he backed off. then this older black guy started in about how he knew their mommas and they shouldn't be acting like fools etc. and everything calmed down. Not sure what I woulda done if that dude had hit me though.

sarahel, the most interesting are the Delancy Street people taking teh bus to work in the morning. They may be clean and sober but they still talk really loudly and vulgarly like street people.
― l'homme moderne: il forniquait et lisait des journaux (Michael White), Thursday, 8 October 2009 22:55 (sixteen years ago)
on the one hand I was like, this kid is 14, maybe 16 at the oldest, and I'm pretty sure he couldn't physically hurt me very much unless he's got a weapon... otoh it seemed ridiculous to get into hypothetical "who can I beat up" scenarios...
― the taint of Macca is strong (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 8 October 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)
Shakey, a cursory inspection of my own misdeeds in adolescence added to the experience of taking the bus home from work now does not leave me with a stellar opinion of teenagers.

I was coming home late night on the 71 or 6, this scary disturbed guy - one of the types that seem like they could do something violent - asked the few people around me if he could borrow their cell phones, and they all said no pretty curtly. I wanted to be nicer, so when he asked me, I said sorry...I don't have it with me. Then...I remembered that I was expecting a call. He sat across from me - nobody else around, and I basically just prayed that it wasn't going to go off.

I've kind of given up on being 'cool' with people on MUNI (or in the street). If they want a cigarette and I don't want to give them one, I'll simply say, "Sorry. No." I don't really owe it to them and I don't mind being kind but I hate the implication of obligation.

xp - one of these days, I am going to get my ass kicked for rudely telling someone "no" they can't have a cig.
one of my worst Muni experiences was when these two 13 or 14 year old kids were on a packed N-Judah during morning commute, goofing around, being really loud, and pushing each other into other riders. This older office-worker lady asked them nicely to stop, and one of them said, "shut up, Coffee-breath!" (which actually cracked me up, because it was true).
Anyway, I started getting pissed after they rammed into me a few times, so when the doors opened at Civic Center, I grabbed them both and pushed them out the door, and said something like, "get the fuck OFF!".
After the doors closed, the kids were kicking the train and spitting on the windows, and the other riders were thanking me and stuff.
When I got to work, this lady I work with was like, "hey thanks for throwing those rude kids off the train this morning", and I pretty much did a facepalm knowing someone I work with saw me do that.
