oops there isn't an app for that

Think that JG love is more about him being pals with Brent S (NNW maker) than it actually being any cop. Guy made NNW, everybody loved him, he was bought out by Newsgator and I guess he descended into corporate lunacy, because all his software got crappy and he stopped updating. Guessing JG is trying to give him a break.
Latest reviews of NNW on the store are awful, too. Sticking w/byline.

Is the storm still going on about paying another $3 for the new version of Tweetie? Cheap-ass celebrities.
otm xp
speaking of Things wrt the Tweetie debacle: Things is worth more the $10 to me
― shaane, Sunday, 4 October 2009 01:42 (sixteen years ago)
NNW works wayyy better than it used to i'll tell ya that much
― gore vitalic (s1ocki), Sunday, 4 October 2009 02:10 (sixteen years ago)
and if you look upthread you'll find i was a real disser of it
― gore vitalic (s1ocki), Sunday, 4 October 2009 02:11 (sixteen years ago)
I bought Things and it's very lightweight and cool (though you do get the feeling "I paid $10 for 700kb?!")
but now I am crippling under the pressure of actually having to make a to-do list. is there an app for that?
― power, corruption & plies (dyao), Sunday, 4 October 2009 05:47 (sixteen years ago)
i do get that! it'd be nice to be able to upload related files or to have THE SWEETEST TRANSITIONS ever or something.
― shaane, Sunday, 4 October 2009 07:37 (sixteen years ago)
Hahah, woah, the new NNW is shocking. Just tried it there and within about two minutes it had done that annoying thing where the page I was reading gets "stuck" and it won't display the feeds list again until I quit and restart. It might be a tiny bit better than the previous one, but it feels half-finished and cobbled-together -- and some of the reviews on the iTunes store are frighteningly damning. (Some, in fairness, are written by idiots, but hey.)
― What do you want? This ain't an egg shop (grimly fiendish), Sunday, 4 October 2009 10:54 (sixteen years ago)
yeah the new NNW kinda blows.
I've used Things for about six months and am really happy I blew the money.
― Where is Stephen Gobie? (Dandy Don Weiner), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
jeez thanks for the drop7 recs. just needed all my time soaking up :-(
― Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Sunday, 4 October 2009 22:31 (sixteen years ago)
just to iterate: new NNW is a P.O.S. i get pissed every time i use it.
― shaane, Saturday, 10 October 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)
Byline is still one of my most used applications.
― Jeff, Saturday, 10 October 2009 15:58 (sixteen years ago)
hey, look, it's a buck off. let's take a look-see.
― shaane, Saturday, 10 October 2009 16:01 (sixteen years ago)
I'm trying out Grocery Gadget. I've wanted a grocery list application for awhile now, but it had to have specific functionality. Grocery Gadget has a web based component that syncs up with the iPhone application. So I can have all my lists on there, and so can my wife. We organize them by store, so if either of us happen to be going there, we can just pick up what is on that list. And since it is all synced automatically, we don't have to worry about picking up duplicate items.
― Jeff, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:26 (sixteen years ago)
really likin instapaper
also, ultralingua makes the best language dictionary hoonja doonja i've ever seen - it'll even conjugate
― Tracer Hand, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)
Am trying out Reeder as a replacement for Byline. It has a really nice UI, and keeps an archive of items you've read.
― stet, Saturday, 10 October 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)
Slightly weird use of tab bar: it's actually a filter at the bottom. Had me confused, get it now.
― stet, Saturday, 10 October 2009 23:15 (sixteen years ago)
and keeps an archive of items you've read
A feature that couldn't interest me less, I have to admit. How else does it compare, though? I really, really like Byline -- I can't believe I put up with NNW for so long, but the whole moving-to-Google-reader thing seemed an unnecessary hassle till my hand was forced -- but, y'know, I've no fucking loyalty at all these days.
― What do you want? This ain't an egg shop (grimly fiendish), Sunday, 11 October 2009 11:32 (sixteen years ago)
is there an app that makes the phone functionality any less shit?!
i mean like saving numbers etc is such a fucking joke, you can't just click "save" when someone texts you and you don't have their number.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 11 October 2009 11:41 (sixteen years ago)
lol i know whose text you're referring to
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 11 October 2009 11:44 (sixteen years ago)
what's hard about "add to contacts" btw dude
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 11 October 2009 11:45 (sixteen years ago)
you can't do it in a text tho can you? like "use number"...you can't even add people who've called you, or am I being thick? you have to actually write the number down or some shit!
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 11 October 2009 11:46 (sixteen years ago)
Just press "Add to contacts" then "create new contact"
― I am using your worlds, Sunday, 11 October 2009 11:48 (sixteen years ago)
garda, you are missing something. all this functionality is there.
― cutty, Sunday, 11 October 2009 12:59 (sixteen years ago)
when some calls you and you want to add their number, in the recents tab of the phone app, click the arrow on the right, then add to contacts -> existing contact or new contact.
ah okay I see that now...lol how do I shot iphone
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 11 October 2009 13:01 (sixteen years ago)
now to reiterate: byline is better than NNW by virtue of it actually working consistently.
― shaane, Sunday, 11 October 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)
How else does it compare, though? It's a fair bit faster at downloading and syncing, the UI is a bit better once you wrap your head around it, er, it's pretty. It's a bit like Twitterific vs Tweetie -- they do the same shit, the only real difference is feeling.
― stet, Sunday, 11 October 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)
Boxhead: The Zombie Wars comes to iphone in 3days:22hours:46minsand you can play the flash version before it comes to the iphone.
― I'm the best maaaayne, I did it (CaptainLorax), Sunday, 11 October 2009 17:12 (sixteen years ago)
I want to like Tweetie 2, but it still doesn't beat twitterific pro for me. I like the ability to mark tweets (not favorite).
― Jeff, Sunday, 11 October 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)
what's up with Things not letting me create repeating to-do events?
― dyao, Monday, 12 October 2009 01:30 (sixteen years ago)
dyao, that's coming in the next update
― shaane, Monday, 12 October 2009 01:46 (sixteen years ago)
haha good. paying $10 for it sure makes you feel entitled to bitch
― dyao, Monday, 12 October 2009 01:51 (sixteen years ago)
byline sorta seems like it sucks in that you have to sign up for a google reader account and then administer all your settings and subscriptions through google.
why i luv instapaper: "read later" bookmark which converts any webpage into an offline, text-only version. it will do this for RSS feeds too. LUV.
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 15 October 2009 10:04 (sixteen years ago)
I could see how that would be a drag, but I already used GR extensively on my desktops, so having them in sync is fantastic.
I'm still playing Peggle. It may have the most replay value of any iPhone game.
― Jeff, Thursday, 15 October 2009 11:59 (sixteen years ago)
yeah byline is useful if you already use google reader; if you dont i dont know why youd buy it
― Bobby Wo (max), Thursday, 15 October 2009 13:56 (sixteen years ago)
anyone in this bitch using Evernote?
― spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)
tried it, can't say it blew me away. the photo/location function is cool i guess.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 15 October 2009 20:55 (sixteen years ago)
Er ... because Newsgator have turned off their free feed? And the new version of NNW (unless I'm missing something) only syncs with Google Reader too?
― What do you want? This ain't an egg shop (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 15 October 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

Bought Instapaper and love it. Excellent for subway reading without an internet connection, it keeps me from distracting myself and reading the articles at work instead, and it's really good at its job - especially considering the iphone's bookmarking is so crappy and rudimentary. I don't know how it manages to parse out sidebar content and keep it away from the main article. Definitely try out the free version, and if you like it, buy the full version.
I tried Evernote and wasn't too impressed by it; I'd prefer a straight up to-do list. I may try Things very soon.

I've beat all the challenges and the adventure mode. Going through and 100%'ing all the levels now. I'll do it, just a matter of time. Some are so annoying. There needs to be a sequel. C'mon Pop Crack, make it.

― Euler, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 07:58 (sixteen years ago)
I'm not a big fan of the rhythm games on the iPhone. It's one of the areas that I think suffer from the lack of haptic feedback. I also don't like the games that you have a little joystick on the screen. My fat thumbs cover up too much of the screen.
