Otherwise I'm very wary of writing anyone I admire unless I really have something to say aside from "I love your work." I broke my rule only once, when Terence Davies (directed of Distant Voices, Still Lives) came to Harvard to present his new film (The House of Mirth). After the screening I ran up to him, said hi, and handed him a letter I had written in haste the day before. In it I apologized for perhaps sounding sycophantic and proceeded to enthuse over his films without reservation. It probably unnerved him because I never got a response. But as I said on the other thread, I still love him.
When I was much younger (11-12) I used to write to my comics idols, via their editors, so much that I got on the list, somehow, for advance galleys of new series. They would solicit my opinion and print them in the first issues. I was really flattered. I think I still have some of those "advance" copies in my mother's basement. I suppose I was halfway to becoming a comic book critic, but then I stopped reading comics so that was that.

Claudia is a great person, so smart, energetic and interesting. Check out her interview in Kutt magazine.
I could start a related thread on 'When nice famous people write to you and you don't answer back'. I guess the letter from Jarvis Cocker asking me to produce Pulp's next album (including demo cassette) would head up the list. I just never got round to answering. I've still got it somewhere.

Frank Kogan writes me back, and so did Simon Reynolds but that's less impressive now he has a blog, and Ian Penman said he liked my t.A.T.u. article "lovely, lovely stuff, one of the things that convined me there was more (WAY MORE) going on in the blogosphere (as Simon puts it)" he wrote to me - a note from your hero goes a long way.
I got an e-mail from Stuart Braithwaite but the less said...

I had sent a short letter to the band telling them I really liked their music and found it disturbing and comforting that my over-identifying with as upper middle class white suburb kids was probably completely accurate and as such would actually bug them. (They've got liner notes to that effect as well. Something like "Note to guys with bands just like ours: Cool. Keep the faith. Just don't come backstage and tell us about it. We'd rather meet your girlfriends.")
He described each member of the band briefly so I could figure out which one I over-identified with most. I chose him, as he described himself as "The kind of guy who writes xmas cards to someone he's never met."

Please give me a job. I lie in a horrible place and I get treated like dirt at work. So anything you can offer me would be great. Especially if somehow it involves me driving a hot rod.yrs truly,H.Mann
their reply:
Dear Mr. Mann,
I represent Mssrs Rickles and Cosby, and at their behest I must ask that you cease and desist your campaign of harrassment and intimidation. Any further correspondence from you will be considered as "threatening" and passed on to the appropriate authorities.

Second that. Haha, I just remembered why I met them--they were playing in Montreal and they asked the Casa management if anyone could point out interesting Jewish cultural/heritage sites in the neighbourhood (once a big Jewish immigrant hotspot--there's lots of old synagogues, yeshivas, mikvahs etc if you're into that kind of thing). So the Casa calls me & I gave 'em the lowdown. Very funny weird incident.

When about 3 my brother really liked David Icke for some reason (he was on BBC Breakfast time at that point (David Icke, not my brother)). My mum helped him write to ask for a signed photo. Not only did he get a signed photo but he also got a Ladybird children's book about counting or the alphabet or something that he also signed. Always thought that was really nice of him.

"Run, Spot," says Dick. "Run, Spot," says Dora.
Run, Spot, run.
See Spot's blood. Dick is a lizard.
"Drink blood now," says Dick. "Arrrgh, grfffllfbBBLLfh," says Dora.
Drink, lizard, drink. Dick licks his chops.
The world is ours. Tremble, world, tremble.

Momus does write nice letters back, sometimes. Sometimes I think he has someone else write on his behalf. Or maybe not. How does one decide which emails to answer?
