Hospital.....

Today I am going to get an operation on my sinuses, I'll also have to wear pyjamas for the first time since the early 90s, and I imagine hospital will be quite depressing as it tends to be, coipled with another month of feeling even worse than I do already.

It's a bit crap really, but then if it makes me feel better after a year of crapness I guess it's worth the apparently agonising pain.

So wish me luck or share your hospital experiences on this thread. I guess convalescence isn't so bad, on the plus side, no work for 3 weeks.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 July 2006 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

Hope it all goes well for you Ronan

Wearing pyjamas is the best!!

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 21 July 2006 07:57 (nineteen years ago)

Good luck/all the best Ronan

If they have hospital radio there maybe you can do some DJing :)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 21 July 2006 07:59 (nineteen years ago)

Also I am fucking starving cos I had to fast last night and was DJing.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:00 (nineteen years ago)

:( starving is bad. But pyjamas are kickass! Hope it goes well.

Zora (Zora), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone is suddenly REALLY NICE to you, it's great. All depends on how long you're in there for - I once spent a week in a French respitory hospital and nearly went mental. That was mostly because a) I was on holiday and wanted to be out having fun and b) I was the only person in there expected to come out alive.

Erm, anyway, as long as you've got an iPod and a large pile of books you should be okay. Waking up in the middle of the night can be weird though.

If you'd had this operation a month earlier you could've just lay there and watched World Cup coverage all day. You'd have seen every single match!

Good luck with everything anyway.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

just another Saturday night for Matt DC there.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I was thinking that, would have been perfect if the World Cup was on. Now it'll be clicking the transfer speculation thread 10000 times.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

Good luck Ronan! How long do you have to actually stay in hospital? Convalescing once you're at home won't be too bad as you can ditch the pjs and you'll presumably have web access and stuff, but while you're stuck in hosptial the boredom can be the worst thing. I would recommend making friends with other patients and Don't Eat The Hospital Food.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:04 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, you have Internet access in the hospital?! Get slsk going and you're laughing.

(I'm presuming you're talking about while convalescing, I dunno)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going into hospital in about an hour, and I get out on Sunday I think. So yeah once I get home it won't be too bad. Just not so keen on the cutting open and operating part.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

Mm but you'll have some nice drugs first won't you? Will it be general anaesthetic or only local?

Archel (Archel), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

General anaesthetic.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

good luck, ronan. focus on the time-off-work side of things - and the glorious feeling of fixed sinuses!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

Sure a friend of mine had this done years ago. When he came round he had a sore chest where the Dr had been kneeling on him whilst they broke his nose.

mms (mms), Friday, 21 July 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus, don't say that! Hope Ronan has left already...

Archel (Archel), Friday, 21 July 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

hang in there Ronan, Man of Oats!

perhaps you will wake up with a more interesting snore

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

So when you get out of the hospital
Let me back into your life
I can’t stand what you do,
But I’m in love with your eyes

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

Keep your eye on the prize of happy sinuses! I hope the nurses are nice!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

you can't let the sinuses win! it's going to be fine. xo

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

Hm, Archel he should have left this morning so hopeful haven't caused any worry. It's not the kind of thing you want to be hearing before you go in. Maybe his op won't be so drastic. They used a hammer too - you'd think they would come up with different names for all these hammers, drills and so on. There just seems something wrong with being operated on using DIY equipment.

mms (mms), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'm back at home now. Ow. Nose hurts alot and eyes are watering constantly, plus I can't really sleep despite being tired. I guess I'm through the worst tho. The op was fine and after I was pretty high on morphine for a few hours, I was glad at that point I had my ipod with me.

The doctor who gave me the anaesthetic was weird and Scottish, as I drifted off I kept waiting for him to say "just relax there.......BROTHER!"

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 23 July 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

Glad you came through it all okay. I wish I had had an ipod last time I had surgery; that would really have helped.

"just relax there......BROTHER!" ROFL...

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Sunday, 23 July 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

trust yourself

use the oats.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 23 July 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ronan! What is your exact problem with teh sinuses? A doctor of mine told me that I might need to have surgery on them, at some point in my future.

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

PS-- Hope all goes well!

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

Good for you Ronan, for getting it done - you suffered with them for an awful long time. Here's to a speedy recovery! I hope they sent you home with a packet of good pain meds.

Jaq (Jaq), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

Just noticed this -- glad to hear all went well, Ronan, and rest up!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 July 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

I have lots of pain meds but not lots of pain as such. Discomfort is a better word, nose is just really sticky and blocked and kind of tender. Finding it hard to sleep, if I sleep on my back goo comes out my eyes and on my front I drool even more than I normally do in my sleep.

Am hoping anyway that eventually I'll feel better, after all this, tho no guarantee. Specialist thinks my sinuses were giving me sleep apnoea so hopefully with them sorted (hoping they are), I'll get some relief.

Trees what are your symptoms? I had an infection and really bad swelling in my sinuses, plus my left nostril was really deviated, they now have said. Feel free to ask any questions.

Oh and thanks everyone!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 23 July 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

yay ronan: here's to it all getting better. and yes, i've got a question:

I was pretty high on morphine for a few hours, I was glad at that point I had my ipod with me

what did you listen to?

:)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 23 July 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

Hope you have speedy recovery, Ronan.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Sunday, 23 July 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

haha, first I put on Ame-Skin Is In, this housey mix, but I got bored of that very quickly then tried to think of something that would sound weird in a hospital, so I put on

Global Communication-14.31 (was really good)
Aphex Twin-Xtal (overegged the ambient pudding a little)

Then I blasted out all 110 or whatever Pet Shop Boys tunes I have on shuffle for a while.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 23 July 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah and Loco Dice "Seeing Through Shadows" a few times.......AMAZING.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 23 July 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

four weeks pass...
gah....four weeks after my operation, feeling as bad as ever. improved for a week or so and now back to normal.

All I have to cling to at the moment is the sheet of paper I got before surgery which said "swelling after sinus surgery is normal and can last four to SIX WEEKS", and a few sites I found online which said recovery can take two months.

other than that....despair. I actually don't know what the fuck I'm going to do if I fail to feel better, I can't advance my career very easily, I can't go out and have a beer, I feel introverted and on the edge of something close to depression because of feeling sick all the time and feeling like nobody can understand, not that friends/gf and family aren't helpful, but I mean they literally can't understand....

what have I done to deserve this? I've missed two summers and there is only a glimmer of hope.....I know it could be worse, it's not a serious condition, but I've never had such bad times as the last 15 months.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 August 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Have you talked to your doctor about this? Do you have a follow-up appointment scheduled? I think you need to talk with the professionals about it, not just rely on the sheet of paper and the internet.

I hope you feel better soon; it is depressing to have sinus trouble. Hang in there...

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Monday, 21 August 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

Don't despair! You're still in the immediate aftermath of surgery, which can seem, no—not seem, BE, worse than the original problem.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

I have Bronchities. I'm in the hospital for it and more that I will share only to trusted people. I'm puking blood, having siezures, going into
shock every now and then, etc. I'm not sure of what to do. I walked in here 2 weeks ago now i'm nervous to say I might not walk out. I feel
to young to die but i'm not sure if I will but for some reason I have a deep feeling that I might. I'm not crazy or mental or dilloosional.
Just a worried/terrified and curious teen looking for some answers. Can someone help?

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Friday, 5 June 2020 15:06 (five years ago)

yeah my experience of hospital wifi was bad. there was a free tier & a pay tier. & you had to pay each day to get the tv to work! this was at a public hospital in France.

Joey Corona (Euler), Friday, 5 June 2020 15:09 (five years ago)

you can download stuff on netflix and amazon prime ( i am sure maybe others) if you want to store some stuff up because of the bad wifi.

five years pass...

Just hit 2 weeks in a hospital in Bangkok which was supposed to be no longer than a long weekend. No end in sight. Had back surgery for two herniated disc, woke up and both legs were numb. My right leg has made a lot of improvement but my left is still pretty worthless. Doing PT every morning and now they have me “walking” in something called a PMS machine which is fucking exhausting. Woke up the night after the first session and felt like my legs were on fire.

In a semi private room and got my third roommate yesterday who brought two women with him. So now there’s four of us in one room. One of the ladies coughed all night and would spit into the trashcan afterwards. Plus they talked throughout the night and I barely slept. This shit is going to drive me insane. Haven’t seen my kids or wife in two weeks. Now the doc wants to do a new MRI which I assume could lead to me having another surgery. This sucks

Heez, Tuesday, 20 January 2026 22:32 (four months ago)

Yeah they’re gonna come up on Saturday for a long weekend. My poor wife has been holding it down in Phnom Penh, keeping the kids in school and working her hard ass job. I honestly don’t want to burden her with the trip but she really wants to come.
