I feel both obliged to go and totally disinterested in going.

You are a braver man than I. And yes, go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Only if you will come with me and hold my hand during the scary parts.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Like when the moths fly around the camera?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 23:49 (twenty years ago)

i bet they fought over the role of torgo

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 26 January 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

is the hauntingly catchy but creepy torgo theme played live?

Dom iNut (donut), Thursday, 26 January 2006 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Yes, all the music is played live by members of Blitzen Trappen (or whatever they're called).

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 26 January 2006 02:03 (twenty years ago)

I'll see this the same day I see Tony 'n Tina's Wedding.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:20 (twenty years ago)

You are a theatre nut!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:41 (twenty years ago)

A nut.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:54 (twenty years ago)

I saw this tonight. It was, actually, much better than I expected. For the most part, they didn't play things too broadly. Torgo was pretty good, Mike was great with his constant constipated look, the cop was fantastic, and the wife catfight was a delight (especially since two of the four wives were played by men). Music was aces, although not enough of the haunting "Torgo's Theme" for my taste, plus they didn't include that little up-and-down-a-scale piano riff. They did a terrific job with the awkwardness and totally off pacing in the original. And they managed to make it under an hour without cutting anything noticeable (except, you know, 15 minutes of driving montage).

There were no MST3K jokes included, which is fine, although I really ached for the "have I told you about my five year plan?" monologue at the end.

Anyway Ned you should have come up for this, it would have been worth it. Plus you like Portland.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 February 2006 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I didn't see this until now! I wanna come down for it!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 4 February 2006 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Well, I think tomorrow is the last day, and they were turning away people at the door (you can order tickets online, though).

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 February 2006 09:29 (twenty years ago)

Anyway Ned you should have come up for this, it would have been worth it. Plus you like Portland.

Alas! Maybe there can be a summer revival (I'm starting to consider a brief visit in early July).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 February 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I wish I could see this.

JTS (JTS), Saturday, 4 February 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Check in, at some point this summer I might be going to Edinburgh.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 February 2006 22:45 (twenty years ago)

a summer revival...and a tour? But the master wouldn't approve. (or would he???)

Ryan Cloutier, Friday, 17 February 2006 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Ah, the joys of checking your referral logs...

(Checking the website, you were the other guy [the "straight man", as it were] in the opening acts, right?)

Diane Mahree - April 12, 1940 - December 30, 2007

I just wanted to write a few words about my mother, Diane Mahree. My Mom was one in a million, a very well respected and proud woman, with good values who was dedicated to her family and loved life.

Most people on the Web will remember her as the character Margaret in the cult classic film Manos the Hands of Fate. While many laughed at aspects of this film, I always felt her performance was the redeeming quality, and that she brought tenderness to what many said was just a "B-Movie" role.

The outpouring of support from fans of Manos and of the show Mystery Science Theater has been tremendous. I wish Mom was around to see how many fans have sent flowers and given well wishes to my family. Thank You for keeping us in our thoughts. We appreciate everything you've done. Mom would be proud.

Love,
Ruth Mahree Fletcher

i find the film strangely comforting to watch when i am feeling distressed about stuff. something about michael's constant barking, the jazzy soundtrack, the long pauses and stilted dialogue...

dell (del), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, even the MST3K version of this is very tranquilizing to me.

Meanwhile, John McCain’s best friend for life, wee Sen. Lindsey Graham, is joining in, playing, as ever, the Torgo to McCain’s Master. He is joining in the filibuster threats and making sure that everyone knows that he blames Barack Obama for the attack in Benghazi.

Seriously can't wait. It's both an absurd and wonderful thing that this has come about. I wish they'd found the original audio tracks as such (music separate from voiceovers/Foley) but let's face it, hearing it that muffled way is part of the whole damn charm.

Just letting you all know that Manos is screening at MOMA this weekend.

its time has come

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 4 November 2017 09:35 (eight years ago)

well, i gotta say... never seen it on the big screen! huh. is this the restoration that one guy was doing from a rare top-drawer print?

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 5 November 2017 01:57 (eight years ago)

MoMA is showing a DCP, so I assume so!

It's funny, it's part of this series:

https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/3890?locale=en

and I'm sure Club 57 showed mostly 16mm prints, while here it's almost all 35mm or digital. I saw The 10th Victim today.

On the 18th you can see Manos and Blade Runner 2049 at MoMA! Largest budget gap of all time.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:05 (eight years ago)

Hmmmmm looking at my calendar for the 16th, I just might have to skip it for All About Eve at Village East or Once Upon A Time In The West at FF, both already on my calendar. And a barroom screening of Whale Rider at Videology to wash it down.... an embarrassment of riches!

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:18 (eight years ago)

Manos is on the 18th, not the 16th. (also tomorrow)

I consider it scandalous that FF is showing Once Upon A Time In The West digitally... it p much needs to be seen on a big screen every time, but in 35. You might be OK with a Bluray if those days are gone. :(

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:30 (eight years ago)

something about this just seems like cultural revisionism, a multi-level (insular) repurposing of "low culture" as "high culture". why is manos important? because it was shown at an underground new york city club by three people sometime in the early 1980s, and those three people went on to become Famous Artists! come on, nothing against keith haring, but who's watching this movie on the grounds that keith haring may once have seen it?

bob lefse (rushomancy), Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:58 (eight years ago)

It seems kind of pointless to watch this film without Joel & The 'Bots.

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Sunday, 5 November 2017 04:22 (eight years ago)

i guess i'm kinda curious how it plays without them. it's a sick and ugly movie that they make watchable in a different way than a lot of their usual dross, because it's so dead and empty. feels like it might be kind of an interesting viewing experience in a darkened theater, idk.

thanks for the correction, morbz. i need new glasses!

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 5 November 2017 05:04 (eight years ago)

I’ve got the Blu-ray restoration — per a question above, it is restored from the original negative, but it was a Super-8 or something similarly basic to start with — and without Joel etc it’s a definitely bizarre watch. The lacunae and utter lack of sense in terms of how to edit for pace become weirdly compelling.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 November 2017 05:33 (eight years ago)

added to the MoMA equation is that a *large* minority of every film audience there is octogenarians who have no idea what they're about to see.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 08:08 (eight years ago)

oscar voters, then?

bob lefse (rushomancy), Sunday, 5 November 2017 11:45 (eight years ago)

probably a few... the stories i have...

rushomancy, I could've gone to Club 57 (didn't), but a friend (who is still here 35 years later) fondly remembers seeing Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster there. So some people knew it partly for the movies they showed, it seems.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:17 (eight years ago)

you heard it hear first folks, "manos" has oscar momentum!

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:43 (eight years ago)

how many drive-ins did it play in the '60s?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 15:19 (eight years ago)

Scattered ones in Texas by all accounts.
