Having crushes on people you talk to on the internet

Has this every happened to anyone? I feel somewhat guilty for having one on a guy I talk to. It's weird cause I used to make fun of people like me before, and I will probably never meet the person in question. God damn this modern world!

Postcard Blues, Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I have crushes on a large number of people I talk to here, on AIM, etc. It's nothing terribly serious generally, and it seems harmless.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

am i one of them Martin?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

HANDS OFF, HE'S MINE. ISH.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I dont know if it's harmless(in my case) when you'll probably never meet the guy but really want to.

Postcard Blues, Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a crush on everyone I talk to on the internet.

Wait...I'm crushing on Paul F. Tompkins now. Sorry. I'm the wind, baby.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, to everyone who has me on their buddylist and IMs me regularly:
You are my sunshine.
aw.

Dr. Z Indahouse (AaronHz), Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not admitting who I have crushes on, Hari! It would just upset people.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 30 January 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless you have crush list so extensive, Martin, that a minority of ilxors are omitted, I don't see how that would be upsetting.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 30 January 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a crush on the internet.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Sunday, 30 January 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think most people have been in a situation before where they have formed some kind of attachment to someone on the internet. Why feel guilty about it? It seems a perfectly reasonable thing to do - after all, people can go all "phwoar!" over actors or pop stars without ever meeting them, so it's not a surprise to develop an emotional bond of some kind with an internet person who entertains you/who seems on the same wave length/interests you/stimulates your mind, or whatever, but who - more importantly - probably gives you some attention which makes you feel good about yourself. Many people don't get nearly enough affection in real life, and an internet crush is a fairly harmless way of filling that void.

Crushes come, and crushes go .... the one you have will probably fade in time, so why not enjoy it while it lasts? Being sweet on someone you'll never meet doesn't necessarily mean it's going to do any harm to any real life relationships you have, but it might perhaps have flagged up the fact there's something missing in your day-to-day life which might need to be addressed.

C J (C J), Sunday, 30 January 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I fear at least two different kinds of giving offence:
1. Someone I name not liking this unattractive old guy crushing on them, and therefore avoiding me. (This might be even more likely when the subject is male, I suspect.)
2. Someone I don't name thinking that I am slighting them.

Having said that, I have mentioned lots of people I have crushes on here, on various occasions. This place is full of smart, funny, likeable, sexy people, so I'd be amazed if I didn't have several crushes. I have no intention of ever trying to make anything out of them - I mean, the London crowd has plenty of people I find hugely appealing, but I am not looking for a partner, and in any case if I were, I don't see any of them as likely to be interested in the likes of me, and I wouldn't like to make the friendships less comfy.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 30 January 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

if you have not discovered this yet, if you meet the person in question you may discover that having a crush on someone "over the internet" may not translate into having a crush on the full-fledged person. i don't mean that you might find them repulsive or anything, just that someone's written self-expression, within a particular context, may be different from their real life persona (or may be easier to color/interpret in a way more consistent with your ideal/imagination). in fact, you may go on having a crush on the virtual person but not on the real one.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 30 January 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The rules of the game are that you should always wait for them to come to you. If they don't come, it makes no difference. You could write a novel then. Like James did.

youn, Sunday, 30 January 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

gabbneb summed up my internet dating experience nicely.

eman (eman), Sunday, 30 January 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the particular reason that it doesn't matter is that you realize that all preference is learned or acquired.

I think many of you are just gorgeous. Also, Aaron has a hott voice. Also, there are others I am not going to mention for fear of looking silly. The End.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 31 January 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, apart from Oops who is also hott but he knows it ;P

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 31 January 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Because I'm easy, yes I'm easy
If you want me I come running
without any time to think, because I'm easy

Don't do me favours let me watch you from the distance
For when you're near I find it hard to keep my hand
But when your eyes throw light at mine
it's enough to change my mind
Let me leave my cautious words and ways behind

Because I'm easy...

I am gonna write a little thing I wrote about Tep the other day elsewhere.

Tep gained superhuman cooking skillzor in the great Iron Chef radioactive disaster of '89, and ever since then he has been able to slice, dice, pickle and ice by shooting laser beams out of his frickin' head. He can also make turducken using only the power of his mind. Geese fear him, and grown women weep in shame in kitchens, or something.

Yeah Tep rocks too.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I had one of them! Then I met her and we went out for three years.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I have gone out with quite a lot of online people. But thats different, thats not crushes. Crushes are fun and I highly recommend indulging in the flirting.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

For me, it was a crush I felt awkward, weird and somewhat embarassed about for months previous to meeting. I don't think I'd feel awkward like that should a similar situation crop up now. Which is good! Crush away!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I apologize to the handful of you I haven't flirted with.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a crush on a guy online for years. He got drunk and lewd on Independence Day last year. I went with it. Now he's too embarassed to speak to me much.

Kind of sucks really.

I had one of these then I married her! It's our 1st anniversary in a few weeks :)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 31 January 2005 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I have. It's weird because I spent most of my teenage years obsessing about people I'd never met (LL Cool J and Jordan Knight to name but two). Thing is, too often have I thought somebody a complete arsehole online, then met them in the flesh and found out they were actually really nice, and vice versa of course, that I take it as a given that the majority of people here are to some extent portraying themselves in a certain way. This doesn't mean I don't look at the photo threads and appreciate hottness, however.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear God, I'd forgotten about that! I used to be top of that, you know. I have no idea why.

I don't think I have ever had a proper crush on anyone via the internet. I don't really do crushes any more anyway. I'm sure I must have done in the past, but, like the memory of pain, I can't remember it anymore.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I have crushes on internet people. It is embarrassing, but not quite as embarrassing as your rooommate (who is supposed to be in North Carolina) coming home at 7 in the morning to find you passed out on the living room floor, midwank, with a LoTR movie playing.

Wow. That's like the sort of anecdote Simon Pegg would think of including in Spaced but would dismiss it on the grounds of it being too pathetic to be credible.

two years pass...

i have a bad crush on a girl from a message board. we talk regularly on msn, really do seem to have lots and lots in common (to a surprising level), and i wonder if she thinks the same. we dont really flirt as such though, just talk lots. so maybe she doesnt. im quite aware it will probably come to nothing of course, but its nice nuts to fantasise about these things.
