Only bloke to be decent on 606 on Radio 5, sacked for telling fans to vent their spleens at incompetent referees. For this classic, in fact I used to like his radio phone-in shows that weren't footy based too, he had entertaining nutters phone in rather than mindless ranters, so I can't bring myself to hate him, despite later descent into Chris Evans based hell. And yes he is a bit smug.

Didn't Baker invent 606? When he left (for Radio 1 - and it was still Radio 5 then - not dumbed down Five Live) he suggested they got someone else who was a football fan like Nick Hancock. Instead they got David Mellor in - which was hideous. These days professional commentators do it - completely removing the point that the show was about the fans view. And concocting imaginary football teams with names of garden implements.

Five years ago Baker wrote all the things that Maconie now does.

Pete, I believe he did invent 606 on Radio 5, but some tit who's on radio Sheffield claims to have invented the format, I wish I could remember his name, James something, possibly James H Reeve, that name rings a bell.

His smug appearances on TFI Friday were none more dud though.

But his radio shows had me in stitches, particularly when accompanied by Mr Kelly, who I am sure is odious at other times but they did seem to work well together.

The good thing about them is that they both do seem to truly love football, and have done for years, however, are they partly responsible along with Hornby et al for the "new fan"? and the fact that football became the latest bandwagon to jump on in the mid 90s?

I think they have to be held partly responsible, though the whole "new fan" and fottoball is cool attitude was surely never that bad a thing. The idea that you either 100% immerse yourself in football or nothing was always one of the problems with it. The beauty of 606 and Baker & Kelly Upfront is they did to football what ILe/M does for its subject - it allows itself to be tangental and silly, or intelligent and pithy on wwhatever subject bought up. If not both.

Can we blame Baker for The Premiereship? There is probably an argument out there....

The cookie crumbles kinda both ways although more for the good than the bad. The bad being mainly Pets Win Prizes and his drunken antics with the man Evans.

Great on 606 though as mentioned esp with DKelly. Even greater on Radio 1 Saturday/Sunday morning show scaring all those who had previously tuned in to DLT in same slot. Played what ever records took his fancy which meant interesting sounds and future battles with playlist mafia. Great phone calls, building bodies from peoples names, small children riding in to piles of tincans on trikes and people blowing things up.

He went to Virgin after Radio 1 but then was sacked from there and no longer on national radio. We need him back in the same way we need Mark and Lard back doing an intelligent evening show.

Baker is responsible for Hornby because Baker made Paul Gascoigne possible. And, of course, via Sniffin' Glue, after which came the fanzines, through which indie respectability was conferred on football / us. Baker is not to be blamed for this, since Hornby is an irrelevance.

Cabbage is responsible for the Premiership because the Premiership was a failed plan to secure Liverpool's position at the top of English football forever. And Cabbage IS Liverpool.

Okay, thought that would titilate you. The story is that about a year before Bob's tragic death he and the Wailers were in London. Being rabid mad football fans they decided to have a kickabout with the NME. Imagine the scene unfit Music Journo's vs The Wailers - who were to all intents and purposes quite tasty. Anyway Baker - being known as a football fan (though chubby) felt an extra duty to try and play well so as when they were losing about 10-0 he decided to revert to usual Millwall tactics of the age and went in too footed on old Bob.

Bob was instantly in hideous pain, wailing indeed, and the match was abandoned due to this Baker caused toe injury. A quick trip off to hospital later on tour revealed that said to was not just broken but had become cancerous. Within the year Marley was up there with his namesake Jacob.

Whilst the causal connection between a bad tackle and cancer is highly unlikely and certainly won't stand up in a court of law, Baker blames himself to this day for cutting Bob's career short - and at the same time halving the birth rate in Jamaica.
