DAMMIT!! Brak is no longer my favorite show!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

OPO is not possible here! (But if forced I would go old school with Space Ghost.)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Make that two for Space Ghost.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

adult swim?

brak?

What ya chatting about?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

HOME MOVIES HOME MOVIES HOME MOVIES. 'freakie outtie' is my single of the year!

brak jumped the shark when the mom went all brit.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

This is aNOTHER thread where we make up slang?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Home Movies the one with the football coach and the permanently bemused mom? I like that one very much, maybe even more than Brak. I've only seen two episodes but they were both gems.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law

God, I don't know where to start with that. I'm usually laughing so hard at the premise alone that I miss 33.333% of the show.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is the best name!

(I don't think we have this is the UK, I am sad because it looks great!)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Jel, Sarah: Adult Swim.

(Also, I didn't know Brak had his own show! Does Space Ghost ever cameo?)

I didn't notice the Brit thing, maura. I'll have to pay closer attention next time.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Space Ghost. I haven't seen a Brak episode in ages, but the ones I saw were piss poor. The Space Ghost BBQ CD is really great. GET IT!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Home Movies is getting better, and Space Ghost and Brak are a little repeatative, so I pick Cowboy Bebop (when that was on)

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the entire Adult Swim only in America?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i.e. they only show Home Movies and Baby Blues on the uk/ireland Cartoon Network and they've now stopped showing even them.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

And "freakie outie"?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh God Tracer that's just awesome.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Another vote for Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Meatwad: "Well, if teeth make me gay, then sign me up!"

mmesker (mmesker), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Space Ghost recently went to Braks house to arrest him for crimes he commits later in life. But it was later in life in his (SG's) old 60's show so it was really in the past. Man that was confusing.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll say Home Movies cuz it's the only one not completely based in the 'look it's dada!' ethos of most of the other Adult Swim shows (which I do love, just they can get a little repetitive and formulaic); plus I miss Dr. Katz. Space Ghost Coast to Coast is in a league of it's own still. The Aqua Teen Hunger ep with the pop-up ads was probably my single favorite Adult Swim ep that wasn't a Space Ghost.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

freakie outie is the one song released by brendan poppins and the chimney sweeps. it is also currently the outgoing message on my answering machine. it's in the 'guitarmageddon' episode, which is being rerun soon and which i am watching right now.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

'one time i dropped an egg. that chicken hated me, but i hated her first.'

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, thunderclease is great. also, home movies (though a bit INDYKID at times). why no love for sealab 2021 though? bebop cola = BEST THING EVAH.
(& in Aus/NZ, Mission Hill is part of Adult Swim - only seen the first episode - could be good, could be blah).

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

sealab has been forgetting the funny as of late. also: 2002's breakout star = meatwad?

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I heart all of them, but Brak will always be my favorite.

"Three hams will certainly kill him"

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Cowboy Bebop is still on. I'd pick that but, I've seen 'em all already, so I pick Inuyasha.

Ess Kay, you are the only New Zealander I've met that has actually seen Adult Swim.

AND I SAY TO MYSELF
I NEED EXACT CHANGE

Sealab > ATHF > Harvey Birdman > the rest

webber (webber), Friday, 20 December 2002 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE!!! It's grate! The moonmen are my heros. Oh my god, I never laughed so hard as that episode when they showed up with their stupid ass lasers and kept burning Meatwad with cigarettes.

Oh, and the best episode eva of Space Ghost is VERY EASILY the one with Bjork and Thom Yorke.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 December 2002 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
I've been slacking on Adult Swim for weeks and weeks because they were all re-runs for awhile, but I caught some again last Sunday. The 'Quinn goes on vacation' Sealab episode was pretty good. So have I been missing out, have there been bunches of new Brak/Harvey/Aqua Teen/Sealab eps?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 June 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

The latest Harvey Birdman with the Blue Falcon was genius -- I don't want to get too spoilery, but it was very funny.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 5 June 2003 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Sealab rules the fucking lot.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 6 June 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit, after the Quinn-on-vacation-disco-bear episode, Sealab is my favorite show ever.

You are Jodene Sparks

You are Sealabs smart-ass communications expert. You position as radio operator is, however, advantageous. Whether in contact with your secret mountain stronghold, or selling organs on the black market, your plot for world domination is well upon its way. Perhaps the sickest mind on Sealab, there is no telling what devious plot you will be up to next.

What Sealab
2021 Character are You?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I like that the code they gave me on the site doesn't even work, I had to edit it twice already anyway to fix syntax errors then the picture don't work. It's kind of fitting.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU ARE FRYLOCK -- A large, hovering box of french
fries, Frylock is the voice of reason for the
Aqua Teens. He is very smart, owns a computer,
and is often exasperated by his imcompetent
roomates. He does the majority of the crime-
solving for the Hunger Force, and without him,
very little would be accomplished.

What 'Aqua Teen Hunger Force' character are you?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the sealab rerun that was on last night where they all talk about what knd of Robots they will become is incredible. It has the part where Dr. Quinn rips open his chest and shows a movie.

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i had Adult Swim but at least i managed to get loads of Space Ghost episodes on video CD thanks to the gift of e-Bay

stevem (blueski), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god the robot one is incredible, it reminded me of my weekend actually, except no one did anything as goddamned cool as rip open their chest and show a movie. "With the strength of FIVE GORILLAS!"

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

That's so weird! Sparks looks AND acts exactly like my Dan. I am more like Captain Murphy, but I haven't taken the quiz yet to have it proven by science.

i think Home Movies is still tops for me, since I love Coach McGuirk, and i generally like any cartoon where all the characters have more than their own share of self-loathing.

imago, Thursday, 17 November 2016 17:27 (nine years ago)

that was satire. they also did a sketch that started out making fun of homeless people, then it turned genuinely sad. made me feel like an asshole for laughing at the beginning. that was pretty righteous.

I definitely would not characterize Wonder Showzen as alt-right; if anything it would be much more popular now due to its bone-deep hatred of capitalism and political decorum

well obv but let's hear the prosecution xp

brimstead, Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:09 (eight years ago)

Aqua Teen or Tom Goes to the Mayor... easy to forget how truly fucking bizarre TGTTM was in 2004, clouded by Tim & Eric's success and immense influence on the last decade in comedy, their style has been imitated and aped so much that it's not as unsettling or jarring as it was pre-Awesome Show... Aqua Teen is just a great cartoon.

flappy bird, Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:10 (eight years ago)

Re "ban adult cartoons" I have this vague sense that there might be some kind of fucking culture wars going on over whether you like the pickle cartoon or the horse cartoon and I hope I never find out whether my instinct is correct

fwiw I enjoy both of those adult cartoons and am not going to click on the ilx thread for either but R&M is basically empty calories & so doesn't even approach South Park ito being politically rancid yet seems to have earned the ire of South Park fans for lacking a moral centre or something, BH I see all these earnest posts on fb about a show about depression and but my main takeaway is Jesus fucking Christ guys stop showing the dog fucking the woman

Again they're both good imo. As DJP said, king of the hill is even better. I'm not actually sure what the adult cartoons post has to do with rape culture, which lets agree is bigger than that

The Suite Life of Jack and Wendy (wins), Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:25 (eight years ago)

sorta all over the place there

Mordy, Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:32 (eight years ago)

I think "adult" meaning violence/swearing/sex was the intention, as in WARNING: ADULT CONTENT

King of the Hill is a family show

mh, Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:34 (eight years ago)

what the fuck is the pickle show

flappy bird, Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:34 (eight years ago)

I was nostalgically watching ATHF reruns and asking myself "why did I sour on this show, it's great" and then the episode where Master Shake starts turning black popped up and I said "oh yeah, this bullshit"

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

xp: obv Rick and Morty but I'm going to go forward in the thread as if it meant Mr. Pickle

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

sorta all over the place there

How so

To clarify, I'm saying that I find the two most popular adult cartoons funny and irrelevant to pretty much all wider conversations

The Suite Life of Jack and Wendy (wins), Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:37 (eight years ago)

idk just wasn't sure where you were going with it

Mordy, Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:42 (eight years ago)

Oh me neither

The Suite Life of Jack and Wendy (wins), Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:43 (eight years ago)

im fine with the idea of adult cartoons but can't stand it whenever they cross a line and retreat into "It's only a dumb cartoon!" it's as intellectually cowardly as the Daily Show going "It's only comedy"

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:13 (eight years ago)

like if you want to reference the real world and drinking and depression and murder, you don't get to play the cartoon card when things get inconvenient

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:14 (eight years ago)

I’m happy to see the Wham City folks more frequently but I feel either they have gotten less ambitious/ weird now that they relocated to LA or Adult Swim is not bankrolling anything as ambitious as the Cry of Mann, etc. and they are making do.

Watching clips of the more gruesome cartoons like King Star King, Superjail, JJ Villard's Fairy Tales and I've been really inspired by how gruesome and nasty they are (although in King Star King the mostly voicelessness of the sex workers, the bunny grinding a woman's face into the ground and Molestro was testing me a bit*) and I like that blink n' you'll miss it stuff and how often some of it flies in the face of the idea of a very fixed character model and doesn't worry about characters looking daft or ugly.

Was kind of pleased to see that Allison Schulnik and Hellen Jo are fans of Villard. I hadn't seen their work in a while and I think Schulnik is one of the best artists alive today.

*not surprising when I was checking out Villard and all those awesomely gross cartoonists on instagram that Johnny Ryan is friends with them all.
