Rolling Classical vinyl thread

I love buying classical vinyl! It's cheap! It's plentiful! The music is frequently amazing! Mostly the records are in a+++ awesome shape! The cover designs are mostly kitschy and horrible! Or sometimes they're just functional at best, unless you're specifically into later 20th avant garde stuff but such things don't turn up in my local charity shops quite so often. This is a thread for your classical music scores (no pun intended), but also maybe a place to talk about the collectible side of things (outside of the obvious avant touchstones, what sort of things are worth picking up to resell on ebay? anything at all? is there even a demand out there for this stuff anymore?). Or maybe it can just be a place to talk about favourite albums you own.

oh where to begin...

scott seward, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 14:39 (five years ago) Permalink

i will use this thread to post pictures of classical records i buy when thrifting. there is a place near me where records are 4 for a dollar, so sometimes i will fill up my multiples of four with bach or chopin or w/e. i like piano records and string quartets the most.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 22:50 (five years ago) Permalink

Things I always pick up - most early music like Monteverdi or Josquin Des Prez or Roland de Lassus; Bartok; Debussy and any of the French guys that followed him. Have been going through a phase of English composers lately, bought a big pile of Britten and Tippett the other day. When I got them home and looked at them closely, a couple had the name of my former neighbor written in his writing on the back - the big dummy should have just carried them straight round here. I totally struggle to remember what symphonies by Haydn or Mozart I already own and so I've ended up with multiple copies of those things. The fact that the same things got reissued all the time with different covers does not help at all.

Scott, I remember you saying that Satie always sells in yr store. What are the other hot tickets?

four months pass...

Kind of getting to grips with classical vinyl now and made a pretty sweet find today for £1 - a virtually mint first pressing of this thing:

I think outside of my mum's Beatles albums that's probably the most valuable vinyl I own

space bl00ps (NickB), Saturday, 23 November 2013 23:25 (five years ago) Permalink

oh wait i was talking balls when i said first pressing. i have the same one as that ebay one, which is the third pressing. First pressing has the wide ffss band on the label and goes for waaaaay more money:

guess i'm still learning, but a hell of a charity shop find nonetheless

Those Britten Rostropovich duo recordings are so great. There is another one with the Debussy sonata that's probably my favorite of that piece.

Pressgang Wolf (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 24 November 2013 00:01 (five years ago) Permalink

Yeah I have actually been looking out for the Debussy one on vinyl. Not given this one a listen yet but have been picking up a ton of Rostropovich recently - Schubert string quintet with the Melos quartet, Dvorak cello concerto w/ Karajan, all good stuff

space bl00ps (NickB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 00:15 (five years ago) Permalink

Other than that I've been hammering the violin records, other things I got today were...

Schneiderhan - Mozart violin concertoes 2 & 3
Heifetz/Munch - Mendelssohnn & Prokofiev violin concertoes
Kyung-Wha Chung/Previn - Tchaikovsky & Sibelius vioin concertoes

a trip to mansfield

a poet and Educational Consultant based in Peterborough (nakhchivan), Sunday, 24 November 2013 23:47 (five years ago) Permalink

did it on the strength of those three visible sleeves and the few emi red corners i could spot.

recognise the kleiber pastoral on decca and one of the other sleeves is rostropovich and giulini. any guesses on the third?

looks like someone just trying to quickly clear a collection they've inherited rather than a dealer trying to ditch their shit. reckon you can't collect 3,000 albums and not have some gold in there *somewhere*

dumb thing is that i was in mansfield four weeks ago and couldn't find shit in the charity shops

Evan, Monday, 2 December 2013 20:18 (five years ago) Permalink

NickB I feel for you, I bought & sorted a 10,000-record collection in summer of 2012 and I think it took a few months off my life.

sleeve, Monday, 2 December 2013 20:45 (five years ago) Permalink

at the eleventh hour i emailed the guy back and told him that i was slightly worried that the original photo he posted wasn't a representative sample of the actual contents. he swore that he had now separated out all the easy listening stuff and that it was now all 100% classical. i asked him for some further sample photos and got back shots of several records by mantovani and a bunch of budget line light orchestral comps, so at that stage i told him i was bailing and now i'm just waiting for the refund. there were lots of assorted charity shop price stickers on the follow-up pictures and it turns out he'd bought a pallet of records off "some guy" who i'm guessing must have been in the waste collection business. could still have been a few gems in there but basically it was garbage. whether the initial photo was a fluke or deliberate i don't know. seller was slightly pissed off, but it ended up being too much of a risk for me to waste a day and a tank of petrol on...

These are the oldest, rarest and most expensive pressings. In addition, they are also the poorest sounding and usually in the worst condition.

lol

huh interesting what he has to say about the mercury golden imports which i almost always completely ignore and don't play when i get them. will have to listen to some i guess.

scott seward, Saturday, 28 November 2015 00:20 (three years ago) Permalink

while there are definitely labels that have a high percentage of great sound, he is correct in saying that it depends on the record. not the pressing, but the actual individual record that you have in your hands. (though it could be said of any kinda record i guess. i don't CALL records hot stampers but all records are not created equal.)

i can play 10 DGG records from the same era and in the same near mint condition and maybe get one truly superior record.

scott seward, Saturday, 28 November 2015 00:26 (three years ago) Permalink

What are some of the best classical guitar records or artists to look for? Segovia is obvious but I don't know enough about the "scene" and the highlights in it.
