Landlocked and broke in Missourah but SF is either #1 or #2 on my list. Some great friends of mine are getting married at the Oakland Zoo this weekend, actually. I had my heart set on going but an unexpected situation forced me to move and drained me.
Would hang with all this ILVrs.

I'm heading to Indiana for a two month job, but I might be around the east coast near dec. Wanting to make a stop into Scott's store around then if work doesn't pull in a different direction. Does anyone know of good places to hunt for records through Missouri, Indiana, or Ohio? I know there are gems out there...

As far as MO goes, there is a great used shop in Jefferson City called In The Groove where I've found stuff with massive resale potential priced very reasonably (four Mike Nesmith records for a total of 25 dollars, Robin Gibb's "Robin's Reign" for fifteen dollars, found that Joe Byrd and the Metaphysical Circus record in the dollar bin TWICE...).
You've gotta dig, but it's usually worth it. Jeff City is probably a little out of your way, though, but not by much if you're going to be on I-70.
St. Louis has a few record stores. Euclid Records in Webster has a pretty great selection of used stuff that is often over-priced. There's a shop called Apop in south city St. Louis that has a lot of indie/underground cd's, vinyl, tapes, books, videos, zines and shit. There is a store called Record Exchange that I've heard is huge and may be worth your time, I've never been there myself. I don't really like Vintage Vinyl in STL. I don't know about Kansas City record stores, last I knew they all closed, but maybe that has changed.

arrrrgh don't get me started. harvard square has Armageddon (in the ol' Twisted Village space, metal specialists), Planet (tiny), In Your Ear... and there's Weirdo and Cheapo in central square.

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

i used to get pretty good stuff at Planet ... still sort of in disbelief that twisted village is gone.

I won't make NYC in December (slim chance I might be there in mid-October) but I am totally down for SF in 2012. Maybe June or late July?

Excellent idea btw.

TD's in Bloomington Indiana is worth some digging, a small and very well curated store with lots of nice used stuff.

Record Exchange is probably the best store in St. Louis now. Totally huge, former public library converted into a record store. I still like Euclid but yeah I don't really fuck w/ Vintage Vinyl anymore. I think Record Exchange is cheaper than those other two. But I find stuff to buy at Euclid.

holy crap there's an upstairs. never even been up there.

For the 45 junkies, there is a separate room upstairs with over 10,000 singles laid out in rows, separated into various categories: pic sleeves, colored vinyl, soul, rock n’ roll, 80′s, Elvis, Beatles, etc.

Oh I have been to that place before! It's nice. Never been upstairs either.

That store in St. Louis looks great!! We'll be making a sunday drive to St. Louis and Bloomington soon, and Jefferson City eventually. I also thought the Mid west would have good record finds.
