One time I got a copy of Head East's Flat As a Pancake for my birthday. A bunch of guys I knew took me bowling and I think they found it in the dollar section somewhere, wrapped it up in curly ribbon. I don't think I'd ever part with it.

A girl once got me the Suburban Lawns' first record, which I had been looking for it for a few years. We ended up dating a few years later. Half of that record is really great.

One of my best friends has gotten me a handful of records. Even if I don't play them all the time, I think about him every time I see them.

my friend gave me a really beat up (torn cover) copy of the Plasmatics Coup d'Etat. probably just because it was so funny/cool looking, wendy o on top of a tank with her tits out. not sure if i've listened to it more than once. not really friends w/that guy much anymore, but i still hold onto the record.

i think I've given a lot more than I've received.

my brother-in-law andy gets me great records for xmas and stuff. and my dad usually gives me some of his old jazz at xmas. and i always wonder how he has anything left after all these years of giving stuff to me and my brother.

one christmas i was flat broke and gave my mom the entire D'Oyly Carte Gilbert & Sullivan collection that I'd gotten from my college library job. I'm not sure how I misplaced The Mikado, but I still have that one. It wasn't one of her favorites, anyway.

A close friend of mine has a son who recently turned 13 and was really getting into music. For his birthday I gave him a few dozen dupes that I had been saving as a starter collection for somebody just like him. Beatles, Who, Zeppelin, the usual. His mom bought the turntable. He was totally psyched and ended up being my record show helper last February. I think he's hooked.

I've done a couple starter kits. One person really appreciates the kit after several years. Neither one got the bug, though.

My friend went to Germany and brought me "Computerbeat" by Rheingold and "Fred vom Jupiter" by Andreas Dorau and these little girls called the Marinas. He also brought record shop stories back.
