fucckkkk that. i thought ebay required a media mail option??!
― ian, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)
Given that, I'd ask for a refund of the difference between media and expedited...
― Evan, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:02 (twelve years ago)
On top of that the seller lives here in Texas and charged me $4 sales tax. Is ebay enforcing people to charge sales tax if it's in the same state?
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)
i think ebay automatically adds the tax? come to think of it, i don't think i've ever sold a record on ebay to someone in NY -- i do it on discogs all the time though, but that's a different beast.
― ian, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:14 (twelve years ago)
is it every state that requires that sales tax addition? definitely neither ebay nor discogs requires it, though ive had cali sellers on both insist...

Texas has never had a state sales tax though, the republicans make sure of it, that's why all of our social programs are broke.
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)
huh, that's very strange then...
― ian, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:39 (twelve years ago)
Either way don't let them get away with squeezing those apparently unjustified shipping charges out of you...
― Evan, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)
still been following that Tommy Johnson auction with interest. $16,800 and there are six hours left. watching the end of it will be my workday entertainment for this afternoon.
― dmr, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 15:16 (twelve years ago)
Yeah this is the most exciting record I've watched sell that I have no way of buying.
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:29 (twelve years ago)
Oh, that reminds me of watching a Beatles record hit $18,000(?) a few years ago.
― Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)
Here it is! This was fun to watch unfold also.

― Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)
the tommy johnson thing actually fills me with extreme anxiety.like, it's so common for people who don't know what they're doing to improperly pack 78s. i've never received anything broken, but i've heard tons of horror stories..
― ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)
srsly if this thing breaks in transit it will be a national tragedy. day of mourning, hour of silent prayer type shit.
― ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:51 (twelve years ago)
LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY
is what i would do.
plus, fuck a paypal fee with that kinda money involved.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)
probably just gonna be tefteller buying it anyway. he can come pick it up in his private zeppelin.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)
plus, lie and tell ebay that the sale didn't actually happen. fuck an ebay fee.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)
plus, tell the buyer its cash only. fuck the irs.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 17:01 (twelve years ago)
I'm sure the winning bidder will AT LEAST inquire about how it's being shipped. At this price I imagine that kind of conversation eventually ends up a phone call and many emails. They likely have picked up on the fact that this guy may be pretty clueless...
― Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)
i don't know clueless he is. yeah he was ready to take $4,000 but to be fair there is no standard to go by and $4,000 is gonna sound like a lot to someone. if i had found this in a box i would have known it was money but i never would have known how much money.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 19:16 (twelve years ago)
yeah to be fair he did start the auction at 500 bucks not 5. and he's at least conscious enough about condition to say "no" to all the people who are like "you need to play it once and record it," it's right to leave that up to the buyer imo.
― dmr, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)
When someone offers me $4000 for something I'm not sure of the value of, I'd google it before accepting any offer.
― nickn, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 20:00 (twelve years ago)
Yeah it's a clueless thing for someone to just accept an offer like that seemingly right off the bat. Saying it's because you "live close to where the artist is from" is especially flimsy as the only reasoning at that price even if you're a collector.
― Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 20:34 (twelve years ago)
that's the thing, he wouldn't find a price if he googled.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 20:40 (twelve years ago)
wow...
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:15 (twelve years ago)
HOLY SHIT
― i'll be your mraz (NickB), Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:15 (twelve years ago)
Have you figured out who the winning bidder is skot?
― i'll be your mraz (NickB), Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:20 (twelve years ago)
whoa. I looked at it with 8mins left and it was still at $16K. forgot to go back to the tab and missed all the fireworks. holy cow.
― dmr, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:20 (twelve years ago)
Hope it wasn't one of your kids mucking around on your account xp
― i'll be your mraz (NickB), Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:21 (twelve years ago)
uh. damn. wouldn't have guessed that high
― Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:22 (twelve years ago)

Is this the highest an online auction for a record has ever gone?
― Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:26 (twelve years ago)
I guess "david" is kicking himself for not offering the $4k up before that first bid more than ever at this point.
― Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:28 (twelve years ago)
hoooo boy.. that'salottamoolah.
no idea who the winner is. if i find out, i'll be sure to let ya'll know..
― ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:33 (twelve years ago)
Christ, along with his other auctions he made $40.000!
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:39 (twelve years ago)
dude on facebook is saying tefteller bought it, but i wouldn't want anyone to quote me on that just yet...
― ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:50 (twelve years ago)

― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)

― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:54 (twelve years ago)

― ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:55 (twelve years ago)
i imagine we'll get a cd reissue on the next volume of "the stuff that dreams are made of" or somesuch similar reissue.
i figured he wouldn't let that go. and he has very deep pockets.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)
he will DEFINITELY go get it and take a look at that dude's storage lockers!
yeah, totally. teft may score big, but the seller is gonna make mad bucks.
― ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:58 (twelve years ago)
everyone wins except other 78 collectors
― ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)
"Put it somewhere safe, i'll be right there. To the Teftmobile!"
― scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)
what do you bet he already bought his plane tickets before the auction ended
― ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)
