That Mark Murphy record is one I've never seen before, how does it compare with his other records? I love 'That's How I Sing The Blues'.

the murphy's great. the only other one i've got is II and it's similar. i've heard "sings" and it's great, but i don't own it.
the wife commented that she thought he was ripping off leon thomas and i said i'm really into these dudes that try to sing like sinatra, but over hip/funky 70s stuff. she thought it sounded hella strange but makes total sense.
you have any faves of his?
also found out that he (and andy bey) were both openly gay. didn't know that.

'That's How I Love The Blues' not sings is good but my favorite is 'Rah' with Bill Evans. Wish I had Mark ll arranged by David Matthews with John Tropea.

^I almost bought a copy of that today but it was a new reissue that looked dodgy as hell and was priced too high.http://www.recordsale.de/cdpix/l/laurie_spiegel-the_expanding_universe.jpg^I think I just sank through the chair and through the floor listening to this on headphones just now

Sweet Sister Ray from Cleveland in April '68. Just getting the 20 ambient guitar minutes was hoping for something more gritty but should know this music a lot better shouldn't I?

i'm assuming ida is the same band that back hurley on that ida con snock record? went back and listened to that after giving fatboy spring a play, and it's better than i remembered.
been listening to a bunch of records before i sell them off, mostly garage and psych reissues. going through a major purge at the moment.

what's the deal w those comps?
― 69, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)
what do you make of the evie sands, i picked up an ex-radio station copy a few years ago and it didn't make that much of an impression to be honest.
and the third ear band: all time great. would recommend the magus if you can find it, which they recorded after the macbeth soundtrack. quite different to the first three, but still very good.
― no lime tangier, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 18:46 (fourteen years ago)
i have the magus, and i dont know. it lacks the INTENT and focus of the first two TEB records for me...
― 69, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)
I love Evie Sands, that on is all sunshine soul pop. Even her 70's record is great, full of breaks. I never knew there was a vol 3 for Homegrown. I'm thinking of putting 1 and 2 on ebay. Trying to decide what to sell today.
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)
er, I meant that one is all sunshine soul pop.

i've seen other homegrown comps though. sandiego i think. i think they're just small pressed comps of shitty local bands
― jaxon, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)
it would be hard to match the intensity of those first two third ear band records, true (almost feel like i'm on the point of going into a hypnotic trance when listening to parts of them). i still need to get around to checking out the stuff they recorded in the eighties and nineties, not sure how available that stuff is though.
― no lime tangier, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)
i wanna hear the macbeth soundtrack -- i hear it's almost as good as those first two?

i really like the macbeth soundtrack, from memory it's quite a bit sparer and more atmospheric than the first two (the film is pretty good too).
just finished listening to shepp's magic of ju-ju, which is awesome; great moaning bowed bass(?) on the title track, was wondering if it was chanting at first.
