Hey Ian, how much are you paying for these 78's? Do you mainly buy them on ebay? How do you know which ones to buy, is there a book on this kind of music? And mostly importantly are they clean? Sorry for all the questions, maybe there's a 78's thread?

JacobSanders, Saturday, 23 July 2011 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

there are a few 78 threads!

the stuff i got today were all pretty much $3-5 with maybe one or two being $6 or $7.
I buy stuff on ebay sometimes, though a lot of ppl do not know how to properly grade or ship 78s. This leads to private auctions (paper & web both) by serious ~78 dudes~. I got this stuff from vmauctions.com, and I'm fairly pleased with the results. A lot of these discs are worn. A lot of them also look worse than they sound. Most of the time when I'm playing them it helps to turn the treble down to cut the surface noise. Bear in mind that some of these records (of the ones I bought, the Uncle Dave, Emry Arthur, and Heny Whitter) are acoustic recordings, and even super clean copies will play with some surface noise. Electrical recordings sound a lot better, for obvious reasons. So the idea of 'clean' is relative. I don't mind some surface noise on the 78s, because it's more of a constant rush of white noise than distinct, distracting tics. In the summer, listening to 78s loud with the fan on, you can easily ignore the noise. But some people will go nuts! A record you can buy in "decent" shape for $5 or $10 will sometimes sell for 5-10x that if it's in "E" shape or better.

There are books, yes. Complete discographies in fact with session personnel, matrix numbers etc. I think the main "country music on record" book is about $50 on Amazon. The definitive volume on ethnic 78s was 9 volumes by Dick Spottswood--very expensive, out of print, etc.

What to buy? It's not the easiest! I've been a fan of old-time music on LP for maybe 6 or 7 years now--LPs on County, Yazoo, Old Homestead, Mamlish, Rounder etc that reissue the vintage 78rpm sides, generally mastered from the best known copies or other nice copies of the records. So I know the artists I like, and I know songs I like, and I know to look for "violin and guitar accompaniment" on the label, telling things like that. The word "yodel." I mostly buy pre-war records, so I end up looking for specific labels & label designs. In my experience, the yellow/blue bluebird labels sound nice, as do the later solid blue bluebird labels. Victor scroll labels tend to be a bit noisier than black-label Columbia electricals, Montomgery Ward records sound nice, even with some visible groove damage (manifests as a visible graying of the groove) or scuffing etc.

78s are a fun hobby but i does get expensive.

artists i collect on 78rpm:
ernest stoneman, kelly harrell, riley puckett, gid tanner & the skiller lickers, charlie poole, the three tobacco tags, the delmore brothers, the allen brothers, the blue sky boys, the carter family, riley puckett. all pretty popular artists who have a lot of records you don't need to spend an arm & a leg to get. Roy Harvey, otoh, was one of Charlie Poole's guitarists and cut some hot guitar solo/duo records which are rare & expensive. lots of times i will find things i have never heard of though--got a record a month or so ago by "nicholson's players" which was basically just a front-porch string band, both sides are medleys i think, with banjo, fiddle, guitar, jew's harp.

i like mandolins, harmony vocals, hot pickin, fiddle breakdowns.

Thanks Ian, that's was an education. My girlfriend has a Victrola and mostly jazz 78's combined with my love of country and blues has spurred my interest in 78's. I'm going to keep an eye out for those books. For the longest time I assumed these records couldn't be found for cheap anymore.

JacobSanders, Saturday, 23 July 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

my general rule of thumb for 78s: if it's on a label i 'trust' (to have good sound quality) i will buy something graded as V, which is a worn record. This keeps my prices down. Usually records graded as V are acceptable listens to me.

check out vmauctions.com! he has a lot of things up on the website, from a few different sellers, at set-sale prices.

Also I feel dumb, because in my record hunting through the years, I have always passed over boxes of 78's assuming they were wreaked beyond recognition. But the other I started thinking about the wreaked 45's I have that still play fine with a little surface noise and I figured 78's might be the same.

JacobSanders, Saturday, 23 July 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

78s play better than 45s imo.
