what does solo acoustic thurston even sound like? i've never even heard him play like that. he played the other night here with corsano and others, but i couldn't make it.

scott seward, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

i love that wayne shorter album. wish i still had a copy. i'll have to keep my eye out for it.

scott seward, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

acoustic thurston sounds good! it's a tribute to jack rose, so there's a definite nod to JR's style. scrubby chording and some dry, free plinky plunky stuff, too. i put it on for breakfast the other day, and thought at first it might be too abrasive for eggs, but it actually settled into some warmer territory.

im interested in that terry manning...

69, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

you need it!

scott seward, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

xp ha, thats awesome. whats his trophy record?

i was lucky enough to be at one of those noise shows where Thurston did a solo acoustic set that was like SY Unplugged instead of the normal ruckus, actual songs including rough versions of Sonic Nurse tunes. it was the best, his playing was phenomenal and really clean unadorned.

really digging this. never heard it before.

scott seward, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

i mean if you are a string band/fairport fan you should like it. maybe its really famous and i've just never come across it. plus, all the usual suspects play on it. thompson, hutchings, mattacks, nicol, etc.

scott seward, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

its discogs page is pretty deserted -- i dont think it's THAT famous, but it looks rad.

69, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

i saw that ashley record in a fifty cent bin about a decade ago and didn't pick it up (though i did grab the "you are what you eat" soundtrack that was there too), so ended up paying $25 or so more for it a couple of years ago. need to give it another listen since it didn't really do it for me last time i played it. pretty sure he was a member of an early incarnation of the albion band, the "morris minor" track (get it?) being the only recorded evidence of that grouping (vague memory from the electric muse book). props too for anne briggs covering one his songs!

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

i dont get it

69, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

song named after the fabled english car done in a morris dance stylee. and my mistake, turns out the albion track is actually "lord bateman".

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

lots of copies of the ashley album on ebay for like ten bucks. it's worth ten bucks.

scott seward, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i should probably point out that 25 nz back when i bought it wouldn't have been far off 10 us.

no lime tangier, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

i think that steve ashley record is pretty cool. a couple of the tracks i remember being a little over the top/bombastic but it's not a bad rekkerd. i think i sold my copy.

now playing is that peralta record..

ilxors btw tonight's radio show is gonna be largely country rawk / funk / biker rock. simon stokes! miami! jerry jeff!

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

simon stokes rocks pretty hard. i should tune in.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

there will be obnoxious/witty banter with my partner, aaron "loudmouth" lefkove.

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

i can hear people talking now!

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

or is that part of the song? the song was playing and there were people talking under it.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

ian i totally missed your roundtable discussion. is there a podcast i can listen to?

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

trying to figure out a way to justify keeping a 300 dollar record that i really like...

hmmmm....

i do have a business to run...

i know! i'll trade in some of my own records for this record! that oughta work and help curb my guilt.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

lol scott there was not much of a roundtable discussion, we just bitched about it for a minute. but the show is archived here:

looooove jessi coulter.

i'm listening to tons of organ jazz 45s! prestige, blue note, impulse, verve.. all kinds of bangers. jimmy smith, big john patton, jack mcduff... really strange to see such a nice collection of organ jazz 45s. guy had a few hundred probably. all clean.

usually those clean blue note/prestige singles are juke box stock. that's why they are clean. still a lot of that stuff out there too. they look and sound so nice.
