trip maker, that nonesuch rec has the joseph and louise spence song from FIGHT ON YR TIME AINT LONG, right? i love that song.

69, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

mike rep & tommy jay - the grim-o-comix sequence.

this really ranks with the finer basement folk-psych records of the late seventies... imo.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

agreed!

69, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

69, I'm not sure, I don't have FIGHT ON. I guess that is a Mississippi comp?
There are a few Joseph Spence songs on it, two are "...and Family" and another is solo.
They are all amazing, though. So are the other tracks.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it is -- it's really great. i like the spence record on ARHOOLIE too (also reissued by MS FWIW), but not as much as that song w louise.

69, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

We've got the Arhoolie at the community radio station.
He's like a Bahaman Abner Jay, kinda. I do like the accompanied stuff a little more, it's pretty magical.
They do a killer "And we bid you goodnight."

haha wow. I think it was my 12th or something. I saw em a lot in the 90s. It was a fun show and worth it to see em play a 1996-era setlist with a buncha songs from Propeller, Grand Hour, Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes but man they were waaaaaaaasted. I know theyre always like that, maybe it was that I was a lil less drunk than usual at a gbv show (maybe a lot less) but at certain points I was like damn guys. In the last song of the main set Bob sang the first verse of Smothered in Hugs, then the second verse, then the first verse again before going to the chorus (while Tobin and Demos looked at each other like "wtf"). Mitch Mitchell stood half the show smoking cigs and throwin up rock n roll devil horns instead of playing guitar lol. But still, any show that ends with "Weed King" I mean c'mon it's gonna be a good time.
