you have more bohannon than i do!

jaxon, Thursday, 16 September 2010 06:02 (fifteen years ago)

i know all his albums (that i've heard) are amazing and i dunno if i've heard a necessarily "bad" song, but it started getting a lil samey after 6 or 7

jaxon, Thursday, 16 September 2010 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that list is like whoa. I only have Gittin Off and a couple 12"s. Always on the lookout for Stop and Go, I had heard that one was the best.

dmr, Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

STOP AND GO is very unique in the discography. there are these two slow-burnin sax funk songs "run it on down mr DJ" and "singin a song for my mother" that are two of my favorite bohannon songs, but dont really have any analogues from his third record on (again, havent heard KEEP ON DANCIN). from the third record on, with only a few variations, you get hard funky disco (moving slowly as time goes on from funk to disco to electro) on the A-side and kinda schmaltzy lite-soul (tinged with disco in some cases) on the B-side. while the B-sides arent the bangers, theyve definitely grown on me a lot. i think there's a sweet spot starting with SUMMERTIME GROOVE, though, as he introduces caroline (carolyn crawford) as his protegee/backup-lady. im stoked to hear her record, which jaxon has generously offered to lend me :D

I passed up buying Summertime Groove one time cause there was no listening station and it looked maybe too slick late-'70s discoey. Bad call I guess!

dmr, Thursday, 16 September 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

well i mean, it definitely IS slick late-70s disco, compared to his funkier older stuff. but like, his use the tropes of slick late-70s disco is real mastery. the ones immediately prior to SG strike me as a little more awkward, which might reflect his slick-disco learning-curve or something?

69, Thursday, 16 September 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

first two edits are from Summertime Groove. it's a pretty epic album. pete i have keep on dancin' too if you wanna borrow. when do you need them by? sunday?

(that is messages s/t LP on destijl records, and it is some cosmic psych jamming, but not heavy or abrasive in any way. mellow stoners.)

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Friday, 17 September 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

idk if that's legible, but the record is patrick o'hearn - ancient dreams

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Friday, 17 September 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

downloading now. my mom used to rock a patrick o'hearn cd when i was in HS. i remember it being corny as hell. now she's got a signed picture of a black rebel motorcycle club poster signed when u walk into the house and cds by Buraka Som Sistema. 10 yrs of working in college radio has changed that woman

jaxon, Friday, 17 September 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

dont know patrick o'hearn, but im still willing to bet i like him more than black rebel motorcycle club

no offense to your mom, jaxon.

69, Friday, 17 September 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

o, i lied, it wasn't o'hearn, it was ray lynch. sounds like pinkfloyd in the beginning bass delays

jaxon, Friday, 17 September 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

o'hearn is the bassist for missing persons. mark isham plays trumpet on that record, and it's produced by peter baumann. no real connection to anything just thought you may have heard of it- sounds a lot like the best isham tracks but with some added fairlight and more pronounced bass sounds. basically just a really solid new age record.
