already had 'Central Heating', but picked up this VG copy of the 1st alb for 50 cents last week, Rod Temperton is some kind of pop genius to be sure. I totally forgot about "Always and Forever." man, I didn't even know it was them. I don't think I've heard the track in over a decade, ever since WGCI-AM switched format from dusties to gospel. what a drag it was when that happened...

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:14 (fifteen years ago)

.. also, it inspired me to hear that "Ain't No Half Steppin" sample, so went deep into my stacks to pull out another old friend I haven't seen for about a decade

late late period Mann/Weill continued to deliver. what a career. anyway, other than that, this album is pretty great "boogie" kinda stuff. for fifty cents anyway

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 14 August 2010 07:36 (fifteen years ago)

alb really does feel a bit like a warm-up for 'Thriller' tho

that 'Tres Hombres' gatefold shot is one of my all-time faves

Scott, how do you like the Child album? I couldn't really get into it, but should probably listen to it again

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 14 August 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

i dig the child record okay. decent stoner plod a la the fudge. play it loud when you are wasted. that might help. not the most ambitious album in the world. i wouldn't tell someone to pay more than 10 bucks for a copy.

playing this now and it sounds SO FUCKING GREAT. feel like slim is in the room with me.

. I totally forgot about "Always and Forever." man, I didn't even know it was them. I don't think I've heard the track in over a decade

Me either (on both of those counts.) Think I even thought of that song as Debarge or somebody, not Heatwave. Got that same LP for $1 last month, btw. Decided it was fair to okay -- a passable keeper, but it didn't blow me away. Curious what else you loved on it, Stormy. Besides "Always..." and "Boogie Nights," I mean. (Think my next favorite is "Beat Your Booty," but that might just be because I think the title's funny.) Still something neat about them being a soul-disco band from Germany (with British people, a la Hot Chocolate, too), though, who actually managed three huge hits in the States.

xhuxk, Saturday, 14 August 2010 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

(Actually, less than $1, come to think of it -- It was a freebie from Metal Mike.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 14 August 2010 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

Meanwhile, played today:

Bellamy Brothers - Plain & Fancy (Curb 1977)
John Conlee - Harmony (Columbia 1986)
Charly McClain - Who's Cheatin' Who (Epic 1980)

fuck, aside from the first track which is a bit too heavy for me, this medicine had lp is ruling.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Sunday, 15 August 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

yo Chuck (oh man, as a massive PE fan I just love typing "yo Chuck"), I dunno -- I think the whole first side of that Heatwave album just smokes! It's obviously got the two great singles, but I also think the lead-off title track "Too Hot To Handle" is a nice slice of funk, and especially "Ain't No Half-Steppin'" is a solid groover. And what inspired me to pull out my Big Daddy Kane LP again after like 10 years...

Second side is somewhat forgettable, although, yes, I do love that "Beat Your Booty" track, serious funk.

Of their "big three", I still think the best single is "Mind Blowing Decisions", from the follow-up LP, 'Central Heating'. That is a stone cold jam.

I dunno, I just do think that these late-70s albums are fascinating in terms of tracing the shift in funk from the 70s style to the early 80s, certainly this guy Rod Temperton -- however much filler there may be on any random LP he is involved with -- knew his way around pop hooks.

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 15 August 2010 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

actually stopped by the rekkid store again tonite, got a NM copy of this for 50 cents..

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 15 August 2010 03:56 (fifteen years ago)

actually, wow, in another "i Didn't know it was them" moment, listening to this Kool and the Gang alb just now and the track "Take My Heart" from side 1 totally punched some memory buttons. Was that a single? *checks wikipedia*

ah ok, apparently it was a US R&B #1 in 1981! totally forgot about this song. holy fuck this band was really an unstoppable pop machine. I mean, I only picked up the album for 50 cents because I wanted to hear the big hit "Get Down on It" again, totally forgot about "Take My heart"

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 15 August 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

listening to that maxfield parrish lp again.

^^ fuck but does that album fucking rule. I don't have the 2009 lp they did ... need to get it, stat

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 15 August 2010 06:24 (fifteen years ago)

ian I have the first Medicine Head album on CD ( on the brilliant Repertoire label, they did such a good job, bonus trx, etc ) , but I've never heard anything after the first one. They rock tho! based on the one alb I have, need to branch out to the later stuff....

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 15 August 2010 06:28 (fifteen years ago)

Of their "big three", I still think the best single is "Mind Blowing Decisions"

??? -- Don't even think I know that one! Their third hit (#7 pop) was actually "The Groove Line."

But yeah, you're right, "Ain't No Half Steppin'" grooves real nice, and I made the hip-hop connection with its title, too. Also feel like I can detect the roots of early '80s British funk (Junior, Linx, Imagination, whoever) on some of that Heatwave LP (though maybe that's just my imagination.)
