i still rock the 1st otc album. pretty much everything else can go to hell. actually the 1st nmh album is cool, which is crazy seeing how the 2nd one borders on the worst music ever recorded.

hobbes, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

love "jumping fences" from the first OTC, love "i shall be floated" from the second. i still think those NMH albums are pretty great, even though i will admit that they havent aged super-well, and certainly did way more harm than good.

I just traded in a copy of the George McCrae lp tonite at Reckless (had two copies.) My fave the LP (other than the title cut, which has long been like top 5 songs all-time for me) has always been "Make It Right". It has that same 'droney organ and simple-but-splendid chord changes' vibe as the title cut.

dude, stormy, sell this shit to ME instead.

by another name (amateurist), Thursday, 12 August 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

ronnie hawkins - the hawk
alastair galbraith - mass (new one; great. siltbreezers.)
mel tillis - the great mel tillis sings "walk on, boy" and other great country hits

not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 12 August 2010 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

snuck out this afternoon and picked up:

Jessie Hill - Ooh Poo Pah Doo pt 1+2
Bobby Gregg and His Friends- The Jam pt 1+2
Wilbert Harrison - C.C. Rider / Why Did You Leave
Louis Brooks and His Hi-Toppers - It's Love Baby / Chicken Shuffle

city worker, Saturday, 14 August 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

john martyn - glorious fool (terrible, terrible review here, but funnily, i really dig this album. produced by phil collins, so it's a bit smoother, but that's what i like about it. kinda reminds me of a gruffer michael franks. the full band version of "couldn't love you more" w/clapton is just amazing)
john martyn - well kept secret
richard vimal - aquarhythmies (spaced out stacks of synths new age)
staple singers - turning point (with 80s boogie cover of talking heads slippery people)
eberhard weber colours - silent feet
alan vega - saturn drive/wipeout beat 12"
spinners - happiness is being w/the...
steve tibbetts - safe journey

jaxon, Saturday, 14 August 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

jax, if you or anyone else sees a copy of "stormbringer" by john & bevm martyn, think of yer pal IJ

posted this over in 'Stores in New York' on ILM, really belongs here:

back from ny; went to both Academys, Kims, Other Music, Gimme Gimme was closed. Academy is by far the best of the lot. Other Music (which i used to love) is just feeling really tired, and i never can figure out their categories; meagre used vinyl.

Academy, on the other hand: both locations great. didn't buy much at all, but it was great fun nonetheless. really like the bright and spacious layouts of both locations (i'm old and i've done my time in crowded dark record stores!)
my little haul:
Bovine Over Sussex W. 10" (from the EV store)
The Only Ones-Even Serpents Shine
Richard Barone-Cool Blue Halo
Deerhunter-Microcastle the single one on white vinyl

i would've said hello, Ian--but while i was there i overheard two people come in asking for you; guess you were due in later. hopefully next time!

nerve_pylon, Saturday, 14 August 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for the kind words, nerve pylon! i wonder if i was working when you were here in the brooklyn store.

yah, I bought this a couple months back and love it as well -- in fact, Jaxon i bought on your "keep buying everything by Martyn until it sucks" idea! that said, how is 'Well Kept Secret' ??

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 15 August 2010 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

XP Yeah, the only piece I know from the LP is Akrata, and the others sound really interesting — I actually like Xenakis's "ST" pieces despite them being his most difficult works and X himself saying he disliked them later on in life, and the other pieces I didn't even know existed, so I'm excited to hear these. I would like to make a digital rip of these but I don't have the equipment.

Joanie Loves Shakuhachi (corey), Sunday, 15 August 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

Xpost. Terrible. Absolutely terrible

jaxon, Sunday, 15 August 2010 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

forgot to post these eyewitness photos from the thrift store. couldn't find any records, but scored this cool video. i used to see this video for sale in nyc when i was a kid and bleeker bobs would be selling it for, like, 40 bucks or whatever so i never bought one. i just had to wait awhile before i could get it for a dollar.

gerry goffin - it ain't exactly entertainment
bobby brown - prayers of a one man band

not everything is a campfire (ian), Sunday, 15 August 2010 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

is the Boz the one on Atco/Atlantic or whatever? always been a little curious about that record...

Stormy Davis, Monday, 16 August 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

it's on atlantic.. got allman on it, and it was produced by marlin greene!

not everything is a campfire (ian), Monday, 16 August 2010 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

69, Monday, 16 August 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

today... kinda lolsy haul--

grateful dead - workingman's dead (upgrade to green label; VG with some scuffs but likely sounds better than the later pressing i had. i mean, it does, as long as the one hairline doesn't tic.)
doors - la woman (late press, $2, never owned this.)
brinsley schwarz - despite it all
glass harp s/t (used to own this, scott's a fan, giving it another go. $5.)

not everything is a campfire (ian), Monday, 16 August 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

albino python on cocaine (corey), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

bgm is great. been listening to it a bunch lately

jaxon, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

I've been listening to it for maybe 4 years but have never owned it until now. Debating whether I should put up the mini posters in my bedroom or leave them in the sleeve.

albino python on cocaine (corey), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

so broke right now but I did get the A-Frames 333 triple LP, so nice to hear all those oop singles finally.

sleeve, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 19 August 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

van smack, that Cloudland Canyon is rad.

Not been on here for a while I think, so here's what I remember of the last few months:

Yellow Magic Orchestra - YMO (already got this on CD but the vinyl was reasonably priced)
News From Babel - Work Resumed on the Tower
Beach Boys - 20/20
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Nilsson - Son of Schmilsson
Walter Carlos - By Request
Dagmar Krause & Kevin Coyne - Babble
Tony McPhee - the Two Sides of Tony McPhee (actually got this as a birthday present for a friend but his girlfriend found out he already had it... still, it's awesome)

Hmmm, there is stuff missing from this list but I cannot bring it readily to mind.

emil.y, Thursday, 19 August 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

So what's up with these Rallizes LPs that Volcanic Tongue is touting. Anyone heard em? Might have to go for it. I only have Live 1977 on CD. (They just sent something out on twitter about limited LPs of Blind Baby and Heavier Than a Death)

dmr, Thursday, 19 August 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)
