69, Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

you spin the choicest top shelf LPs. keep at it long enough and you'll be digging in the trash collecting dollar swill like us old-timers

I was sleep so I was lost (herb albert), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

speaking of dollar swill...

^^^ SO great. speaking of dollar swill. although not swill because the Moodies ruled hard. the whole first side is amazing, but especially that crazy noise intro going into "Higher and Higher". then "Eyes of a Child", "Floating", man you make me want to spin this if I didn't have to go to bed soon

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 22 July 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

Moodies maybe the group I mainlined the most in the last year, picked up beautiful Threshold originals of everything for three bucks or less, I'm only missing 'Question of Balance'. Pawed a nice copy at the record store today, actually, but they wanted 4 bucks. too much! i'll find it in time

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 22 July 2010 04:18 (fifteen years ago)

I finally got 'Question of Balance' this year in the John Doe $1 bin and it's great. never realized it was 1970 and always assumed it was like disco Moodies or something because it was one of the Moodys you could find in every record store.

I got into the Moody Blues way back in 8th grade from a friend's hippie step-dad who turned me onto 'In Seach of the Lost Chord', which is my all-time fave and became a real touchstone at the time as I was getting into Timothy Leary and sitars and 60s rock and wanting to be a little beat/hippie myself.

goodnight ILV, wherever you are...

I was sleep so I was lost (herb albert), Thursday, 22 July 2010 04:50 (fifteen years ago)

i've had a Moody Blues best-of CD since the late-80s, but never actually owned any original LPs (except for a cassette with 'Days of Future Passed' that I taped off the radio back in high school when the classic rock station would do "Classic albums at midnight" or whatever) until the last year or so, when I went nuts. love 'em, tho they get no respek

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 22 July 2010 04:52 (fifteen years ago)

hey so this is another "suitable for ILM" question except i trust you all so much more: peter hammill? van der graaf generator? where do i start?

69, Thursday, 22 July 2010 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

honestly, i would say get any 70's VGG or Peter Hammill. start early and work your way forward. i mean, there is good stuff on all of it.

Van Der Graf albums I have (all on CD) are He To He Who Am The Only One, Pawn Hearts, and The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other, all good. Used to have a Peter Hammil solo LP, with "Nadir's Big Chance" on it, I think; wish I would have kept it.

Now playing: Charlie Rich, Classic Rich Vol. 2.

Both the Barbara Mason and Joe Stampley LPs I just posted, and played back to back, had covers of Bread's "Everything I Own" on them, and I didn't even notice until it until I heard them. Pure coincidence. Weird!

xhuxk, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

nice record. definitely not your typical 80's jazz record.

xp Oh yeah, also have Van Der's 2005 comeback double-CD, Present. Like that one, too.

xhuxk, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

I used to have that Tim Berne LP; remember liking it. (Can also vouch for The Shell Game, from 2001.)

so proud today. i couldn't believe it. he would not stop. he was relentless. vinyl fidelity -vs- cd fidelity. you name it. every argument. at the top of his lungs. this other kid was probably, like, 12? in the store with his whole family. i mean, he totally wiped the floor with him. i was in awe. um, talking about my son rufus. he wouldn't let it go. i haven't seen him that pissed off in a long time. plus, he was sitting behind my desk so he looked like the world's crankiest 7 year old record store owner. reposting from the ask rufus thread on ile:

hey, rufus, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the maddest you have ever been and 1 being not very mad at all, how mad were you at that kid you yelled at today in the store after he said that records were stupid? because you seemed really really mad. and i was a little worried that you were never going to stop yelling at him. but my worry was also mixed with pride. i'm just glad that his parents didn't want to beat me up. or beat you up. my favorite line: "DUDE, I DON'T WANT TO FIGHT YOU, BUT WHAT YOU SAID WAS REALLY STUPID!" you were like a pit bull with a chew toy. he totally didn't see it coming.
