ian you dig the larry jon or what? did i steer you wrong?

scott seward, Thursday, 15 July 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

theyre a 70s sac'to band -- S-S records pet-project pressing. only 2.5 7"s worth of material ever came out back in the day... it's not BAD, and inna hard late-70's style that is promising, but like, i dont know. songs just didnt hit me.

69, Thursday, 15 July 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

LOVE the larry jon! gotta find his other records now. i bought it from the owners of the record shop in knoxville where nijoli works; went over to their house to look through records. they had two copies.

this is Hickory Wind - At The Wednesday Night Waltz.
Trust the Japanese to have the thumbnail. Not as eccentric as Homegas or the Custard Suckin' Band, but it's some bluegrass-influence, left-of-center sixties folk. At its worst it's more-than-competent bluegrass and at it's best, incl the cover of "Goin' Back", it's some almost perfect easy-going psych folk.

having some total time-loop flashback as I used to listen to this exact same LP the exact same room I am now (Dad's den) while dicking around on the computer (then Apple ][+). only real difference is now I don't have to hide my beer

this post with the 'Goin Back' reference, just convinced me for once and for all that I need trade my Byrds CDs for the Sundazed series

herb, do you have 'Cottage Cheese From the Lips of Death'? whatta comp

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 July 2010 07:21 (fifteen years ago)

that Cambridge album rules so hard. and every copy has ring wear. kinda like the Mountain Bus lp. I think the covers were all pressed with the ring wear embedded. like acid-washed jeans

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 July 2010 07:24 (fifteen years ago)

I like the first Janis Ian album, with "Society's Child." Played it for the first time in ages a couple weeks ago, and was surprised how much kick and catchiness a lot of it had -- Shadow Morton produced, and seems like he thought of her as much as post-girl-group and post-Dylan. The one with "At Seventeen" never clicked with me, but it's been a while since I tried.

Anyway, played this:

i think the first time i heard "at seventeen" was on the simpsons episode where homer eats the insanity peppers. it's a really poignant part of one of my favorite episodes, so that song will always occupy a weird special place in my heart

i was watching the family guy the other day and they were all singing "the rose" in the car and it was quite lovely.
