cool; i wasn't sure about springing $8 for it, but i love "noticas de brazil" which came out a couple years later, so figured why not

xp, it's next in the queue, i'll report back

hobbes, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

alright, the 1st side of really totally grooves.

hobbes, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

Xp
Is that the 1969 'Milton' or the 1976 one with Shorter and Hancock? if the latter, love it.

sonofstan, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

it's the '76 one. it's got airto on it too. and the shorter lp i got has milton AND airto lol

ok, yeah, this really album (on one listen) is serious business. i recommend.

hobbes, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

i'm basically down with buying everything with airto on it

hobbes, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

really is great! but i love all 70's jj albums. i love everything up to and including #8. then i lose track.

scott seward, Thursday, 27 May 2010 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

so i guess i would recommend his first eight albums...

scott seward, Thursday, 27 May 2010 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

native dancer is what turned me on to milton.

scott seward, Thursday, 27 May 2010 00:53 (sixteen years ago)

LCD Soundsystem - Is this it LP
Phoenix - 1901 7"
Young British Artists - Lived in Skin 7"

Bill E, Thursday, 27 May 2010 03:50 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I picked up J.J.'s 'Really' on my trip to Portland last month. it totally blew me away -- awesome record. I also had 'Naturally' and 'Troubadour', but I think 'Really' is my fave of the three. I was planning to get everything up through '5'. but i guess i will keep going until it gets bad

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 27 May 2010 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

it really hits such a perfect balance of sparseness and grooviness; one of those special records where every musician seems to fit in seamlessly without fading into the background. for whatever batshit reason, it's kind of what i used to imagine ry cooder albums would sound like.

hobbes, Thursday, 27 May 2010 04:51 (sixteen years ago)

lunchbreak:
swamp dogg - total destruction to you mind (looks like a weird caribbean pressing?)
skillet lickers - the kickapoo medicine show
v/a - hula blues (rounder)
ian matthews - tigers will surve (as a present for someone or other)
george mcrae - rock your baby

ian, Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

"but i guess i will keep going until it gets bad"

it doesn't really get bad, but the 70's stuff is the best. and all worth hearing.

scott seward, Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

i am going to buy all jj cale and michael franks records i find for less than 3$ (i'm assuming that'll be all of them)

jaxon, Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

that double fantasy is good. had one in the store, but i can't remember what i sold it for.

scott seward, Saturday, 29 May 2010 05:16 (sixteen years ago)

i got my own copy of the double fantasy last year for $10, so $2 didnt seem like a super deal or anything, but ive seen people pay $20ish for it...

i would like that copy of the cristina album. only have it on cd. thx

jaxon, Saturday, 29 May 2010 07:14 (sixteen years ago)

Went to crusty punk all-day festival called Scumfest tonight - really great gig - I went specifically to watch Doom & the Oppressed but the rest of the line-up impressed pretty well too - unfortunately the distro stalls shut up shop about midnight which sucked because I deliberately waited to buy anything until AFTER I'd watched the bands - so I missed out on some cheap Doom records, but I did pick up Amebix - Arise! and No Sanctuary - The Spiderleg Recordings for a grand total of £11. Also got Legion Of Parasites CD on Overground & the new Jello Biafra CD but that doesn't belong here.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 30 May 2010 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

69, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:10 (sixteen years ago)

does that Pierre Dorge thing have Johnny Dyani on it? I know Johnny played with him for a bit...

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

bought a 2LP comp today called BRAZILIAN GUITAR FUZZ BANANAS but I didn't get a chance to listen to it yet

at first I was skeptical since I've never heard of any of the bands on it but the liner notes talked a good game re: "hey there's more than just Os Mutantes, unreleased Brazilian Polydor blah blah, Som Livre test pressing yadda yadda, rare 45s etc etc"

hope it's good. came with a big crazy booklet.

dmr, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

xp yeah johnny dyani is on it -- havent gotten a chance to listen yet, but im excited to hear it today...

69, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

I just bought something off ebay for the first time in forever. Strangeloves "Night Life" 45 for cheap.

dmr, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

I mean "Night Time." That's the right time iirc.

dmr, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

Pete, that Stanley cowell has been on my list for years :)

jaxon, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

69, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 08:15 (sixteen years ago)

ill keep my eye out for another! i just found it in the berkeley amoeba various C section...

69, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

picked up the running scared ost and agnetha faltskog's 'wrap your arms around me' at the divisadero antiques store where they moved open mind music's stock when it shut down. some good ecm albums there too, but when you're used to seeing that stuff for $1 or less it's hard to justify paying what they were asking

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Friday, 4 June 2010 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

you didnt see jpriester's LOVE LOVE right? if anyone sees that for $15, just get it and ill hit you back

69, Friday, 4 June 2010 19:09 (sixteen years ago)

martin carthy & dave swarbrick - prince heathen
ashley hutchings, john kirkpatrick, etc - morris on
richard youngs & matthew bower - site/realm
matt mv valentine - glorious group therapy
spacemen 3 - performance/hypnotized
a handful of dust - from a soundtrack to the anabase of st-john perse
dead c - perform max harris (and waiting on clyma est mort/tentative power)

no lime tangier, Saturday, 5 June 2010 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

how's that matt valentine? haven't been keeping up with him lately

and no, i didn't see any julian priester. if they had it i'd guess it'd be for more than $15, but who knows (not the most reasonably priced place in the world)

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Saturday, 5 June 2010 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

glorious group therapy is actually a pretty old one, and has a lot of solo/overdubbed string pickin stuff; it's one of my favorites of his.

also, i am jealous of that burnett & rutherford lp! always looking for their material, just have some stuff on comps but no devoted set iirc. well, i think there's a chunk of stuff on my laptop but what good does that do anyone?

got some 78s in the mail today--two alfred karnes, 1 gamelan 78.

ian, Saturday, 5 June 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

also, no lime, be wary of the clyma/tentative power reish--the tentative power stuff seems to play at the wrong speed! it's listed at 45, but doesn't sound the way the singles sound at either speed. need to pitch it down a bit at 45rpm for it to sound 'regular' to my ears. i don't know if this problem is being corrected or if i'm the only one who noticed or what.

ian, Saturday, 5 June 2010 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

j.e. mainer's crazy mountaineers vol. 1
tetuzi akiyama - don't forget to boogie
bill monroe - meet me in church on sunday
kris kristofferson demos collection

ian, Sunday, 6 June 2010 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

dealer brought me boxes of records to look thru today and i ended up taking about 130 albums from him for trade. some good, some bad, and some just plain weird. my kinda stuff. this is the stuff i'll probably keep. though i don't really NEED most of it.

adam faith - s/t (1974 bummer)

topaz - s/t (glammy hard rocker)

miguel rios - a song of joy (originally on hispavox, this is an a&m copy. keeping it for the production alone which is seriously PHAT.)

silver creek - s/t (1975. friends of merle haggard. PROG bluegrass. for real. at least on some tracks. love it. i thought red rhodes made my fave bluegrass hybrid album, but this one is right up there.)

carillo - rings around the moon (stormy, you would dig this, i think!)

tilt - music (70's detroit hard rock)

dr. buzzard's savannah band - calling all beatniks! (sealed, which is nice for buzzard fiends. like me.)

david houston - david (*****)

bill wilbourn & kathy morrison - the lovers

elton britt - i heard a forest praying

starwood - homebrew

fast radio - under my thumb/ tony lee - reach up ( unidisc 12 inch)

7th avenue - new york on fire/miami heat wave (this shit kills me. 80's disco that is 100% PLEASURE)

henson cargill - skip a rope (pristine! i think i own half this album on 45s.)

sean delaney - highway (bonkers 70's stuff. still don't know what to make of it. way over the top.)

jud strunk - daisy a day (i'm a strunk completist, but i can't remember if i have this already. i think i do.)

jack clement - all i want to do in life (this made me very happy today to get this. sealed even. so great.)

bill davis and his singing dulcimer - smoky mountain melodies (on Old Tradition. sweeeeeeetness.)

scott seward, Sunday, 6 June 2010 03:01 (sixteen years ago)

lately i've got--

Tom Moulton Mix Vol. 1 (already had vol 2, been needing the Vol 1 for ages)
Julie Tippetts - Sunset Glow (ha, mind-meld w/ poster 'no lime tangier')
Bronco - Country Home (one of my fave guitarists evah Robbie Blunt ina West-coast psych/folk/country stylee action. 14 bucks for a NM American pink Island)
Starz - Violation. 50 cents
Cathedral - The Guessing Game
Bert Jansch - Santa Barbara Honeymoon (the Drag City reish, got all three now)
Devo - Oh no, It's Devo

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 6 June 2010 04:02 (sixteen years ago)
