I am super happy right now because somehow Ebay Gods were on my side this week and I just got the Users - Sick Of You 7" on Raw Records (RAW 1!) as featured on Killed By Death #1 for £9.99 (the opening bid) - was totally expecting to get sniped in the last few seconds but no-one else bid on it! It's in totally great condition! WTF! Woo.

fuck!@ just a week ago there were only $50-100 copies.

its always the summer of love on ebay. um, in the summer. all the kollege kids go surfing. there are people who won't sell stuff at all during the summer.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link

it's always funny when i sort of gamely big $50 or something on a record, thinking i'm going to splurge, and then the winning bid is like $500.

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

biD $50, i mean

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I had that the other day - really unexpectedly - bid on this Swedish indiepop 7" expecting to win it with a bid of like $30 - actually expecting to win it at like $10 - the fucker only went for $150.

what was it?

you're the fucking treasurer (electricsound), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 22:59 (thirteen years ago) link

It was Youth Will Understand EP by Free Loan Investments. It was probably a good few months ago now, thinking about it. No idea it was that sought after. Some joker's been trying to sell that and the Pretentious Girl EP for £300 each, strangely no-one's biting.

i had an opportunity to buy that FLI 45 back in the day, but i thought they sucked :( oh well

I bought their other 2 releases, course they're not worth anything. Both still in print AFAIK

i don't think anybody knows that this auction site even exists.

http://www.mynotera.com/UNCOMMON--VINYL,category,1873,parent_id,categories

i went thru their listings and i saw, like, two records with bids. what if you gave an auction and nobody came?

scott seward, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

That's how I got that Blur singles collection (the zip bag, all the CD singles, you know) for £30

An auction site that never actually took off.

my first ever contact with hstencil in any capacity was about 12 years ago when I sniped him on a pair of Art Ensemble of Chicago lps on the America label ... good times!

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:24 (thirteen years ago) link

he sent me an angry email afterwards

that cover is unreal.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 July 2010 21:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I have one of those, but the condition is well off mint.

Playable but verray scratchy.

a guy just called me at the store to tell me that he is sending me a mailer in the mail to put his record in! that's a first. guess he's had a lot of bad experiences with the post office. can't wait to see it. must be fancy.

scott seward, Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:30 (thirteen years ago) link

that's insane.

i mean i just sent a 200 dollar record to some dude in france and it got there fine and this guy lives in brooklyn. eh, whatever. i started selling records on ebay in 1999 and only once in all that time did someone get a damaged record.

scott seward, Sunday, 18 July 2010 16:55 (thirteen years ago) link

he lives in brooklyn, eh? dare i ask what his name is? i might know him!

Yeah, I've had this happen a couple of times. Dude bought five or six albums, "whoa" prices, and sent one back as being 'less than mint' (churlish to argue)...

Mark G, Monday, 19 July 2010 07:09 (thirteen years ago) link

TONS of 'regular' rock records, but also cool psych & folk and some private pressings and stuff.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Sunday, 25 July 2010 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i know that vinylty guy, i've bought from him a buncha times. problem is, he has "fans" and watchers, so stuff that should sell for a lot cheaper ends up going for stupid prices, because idiots that watch his auctions get in bidding wars

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 25 July 2010 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm willing to bet i'm one of a small handful of ppl interested in his grayson & whitter LP, so i'm hoping i get that one cheap. i put in a comedy bid on the people's victory orchestra & chorus LP but i really don't expect i'll get that.

its sad when i see records that i sell for a buck or two in the store - and that sit there in the store for months - selling for 10 or 20 bucks on ebay. it's kinda why people pack in the store idea and just sell online. but whatever. but seriously, if you can get money for brian cadd or beans records more power to you. looking at the stuff that guy sells is like looking into my brain. i cringe at the idea of starting stuff at 99 cents. i really do. the thought of sending a dollar record to hong kong...yeesh, i would have to have an employee. you know? but it does work. that guy sells 98% of his stuff. and he averages like ten bucks. if i started all that stuff at five bucks i would only sell half of it.

and its funny cuz i don't know the seller - i rarely remember ebay handles - but i was watching one of his records for the last five days.

some pretty sweet stuff:

i probably shouldn't have posted that, now we'll be fighting over LPs.

ha -- even more confusing, the actual record is cat stevens

city worker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:49 (thirteen years ago) link

that is funny.

and that funky guy has great stuff! that's a lot of money on those four pages.

i had that sly boots album for years, but didn't play it much so i traded it to my friend bob and it sat in his store for years and i was always gonna buy it back but i never did. i should have. probably dig it more now. always loved the cover anyhow.

scott seward, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

i realize how fascinating that story is...
