scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

oh and i got the maldoon album i needed. happy to see that. probably the ONLY person in the room happy to see it...

it really is just another curtiss/maldoon album, but it's only got clive maldoon's name on the cover. forget what happened there.

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

and i only have a tape of the blue steel album, so its nice to have that on vinyl. you blue steel fans understand.

secos & molhados album is kinda sad. looks fine, but its a really noisy pressing. like, loud. but it was only three bucks. and the cover is always fun to look at

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

and was siked to get the tribute to komeda album and the fatback album. both so great.

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

the controllers - in control (juana - 1977)

this is the LA punk band, yeah? never knew they had an LP!

bug holocaust (sleeve), Monday, 26 April 2010 01:10 (sixteen years ago)

scott, you mean the Maldoon record with the skywriting? that's a good record.

ian, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:13 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, the skywriting one. i've been keeping an eye out for it. i'm usually happy to find random things, but there are specific things that i want to hear. like the second diamond reo album. i needed that too.

oh and this controllers is actually funky disco soul stuff. not punk stuff.

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:19 (sixteen years ago)

if i knew you were lookin' for that maldoon record, i would have mailed you one. i used to see it all the time.

ian, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:20 (sixteen years ago)

that yellow sunshine album is so amazing. i'm glad to have it even as a reissue.

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:20 (sixteen years ago)

well, you know, its rarely life or death. just certain things that i know i'd like. i like the first album they did a bunch. i'd always wanted to hear that pidgeon album too. its pretty crazy. that's jobriath's first band.

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:22 (sixteen years ago)

how's that mike heron record? i don't think i've ever seen it.
how much of the stuff you got at the fair is for you and how much is for the store? (also see the pidgeon album all the time!)

ian, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

pidgeon cover is a great one too:

http://www.popsike.com/pix/20060620/100506211913.jpg

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah pigeon isn't too tough to find. i just wanted one cheap! cuz i'm cheap.

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

how's that mike heron record? i don't think i've ever seen it.
how much of the stuff you got at the fair is for you and how much is for the store?

i haven't played the heron yet. i played some of the first song. lots of electric guitars.

um, i'm gonna play stuff and see what i want to keep. some stuff i bought just for me. i've needed that hook album for years. i just never wanted to buy one on ebay. so, i didn't mind waiting. chaki's dad really looks like chaki on the back of that album.

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:32 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't really buy with the store too much in mind though. most of it is just stuff i wanted to hear.

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 01:34 (sixteen years ago)

damn, meant that for the hard rock expiry thread. hey wait i can delete things!

scott seward, Monday, 26 April 2010 13:52 (sixteen years ago)

dmr, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 23:26 (sixteen years ago)

so went to Portland last weekend to see Jandek and Thurston play. pretty rad city, my first time! hard to make a dent in all of the stores in that town but still managed to fit in 7 in 2 days. think I got some sort of repetitive stress injury on my right had from doing the 'finger-walking' motion through all the stacks. my right arm has been really weak and kind of numb since Monday.

at Everyday downtown:

Six Organs of Admittance - Dark Noontide (sealed, I guess I assumed this one was out of print but they had two sealed copies)
Ten Years After - Stonedhenge (basically a VG/VG for 2 bucks, perfect starter copy)
Chemistry Set EP

at Jackpot downtown:

Freedom's Children 3lp box on Shadoks. Basically been wanting this forever but never had the spare scratch, then when I finally *did* earlier this year it was sold out everywhere. but lo and behold Jackpot still had a sealed copy for 90 bucks, no sales tax!

at Mississippi:

got a couple of the tapes (first one -- the 'love songs' one -- and one of the Ska/Rocksteady ones)
Peter Grudzien - The Unicorn (guess you can still find this around but I figured I'd just grab it)
Sir Victor Uwaifo - Guitar-Boy Superstar (needed this one, think it may be OOP)
'Fanajana' comp

they were playing the Fanajana and then the Range Rats in the store. Range Rats sounds awesome but I figure I'll pick it up later. (saw Pierced Arrows play on Sunday too, they were amazing)

next day hung out w/ yetimike up in St. Johns and we went to Vinyl Resting Place where bumped into Thurston, who was buying like Henry Mancini records or something I couldn't really tell. got--

J.J. Cale - Really
African Mbira: Music of the Shona People
Real Bahamas, Vol II
Detective - s/t (dollar record)
George Harrison - Wonderwall (just a beautiful, super minty copy. with the insert. no ringwear and vinyl basically looks unplayed. I needed to upgrade my ratty old copy soooo bad. $20.)

hitched a ride with TM back into town as he was going to Crossroads, on the way spotted this smaller store that wasn't on our lists, Sonic Recollections. don't remember anybody mentioning it on the boards here either, but a decent little shop! TM bought a Boris Vian record, Percy Sledge, Mary Wells, and some private press wall record, a solo 12-string guitar thing, which I'm kicking myself that I can't remember the name of now. I'd never seen it before. I got:

J. Geils - Hotline (finally!! my JGB collection is complete. super clean copy with no damage to the gimmix)
Julee Cruise - Floating into the Night
Spirit - Future Games
Ten Years After - Cricklewood Green

Crossroads, totally insane place, barely made a dent, but got--

Beau Brummels - Triangle (clean gold label Warners, 15 bucks)
Jimmie Spheeris - The Original Tap Dancing Kid
Randy Newman - s/t (later press, but super mint)

went to the other Jackpot on Hawthorne but couldn't really justify grabbing anything else at that point. all in all, super awesome town and can't wait to get back!

Stormy Davis, Friday, 7 May 2010 03:45 (sixteen years ago)

last week I also raided the cheap-o bins at the Reckless in the Loop in Chicago. I always forget to check those, got totally playable/keeper copies of the following for .49 apiece-

Jim Capaldi - Oh How We Danced
Chi Coltrane - s/t
Bob James 4
Sade - Diamond Life
Keith Sweat - Make It Last Forever
Michael Franks - One Bad Habit
Gap Band - s/t
Weather Report - Mysterious Traveller
Jeannie Reynolds - Cherries, Bananas & Other Fine Things

and tonight I stopped off at DustyGroove intending only to get that Moby Grape record store day 7", but wound up also getting-

Ike & Tina Turner - 'Nuff Said
Ornette Coleman at Town Hall (later pressing on ESP but glad to have it vinyl and replace my ZYX CD)
The Isley Brothers & Jimi Hendrix - In the Beginning (totally not an exploito lp, this is legit on T-Neck and been looking for it forever... "Move Over Let Me Dance" rocks!)

Stormy Davis, Friday, 7 May 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

good work, dude

69, Friday, 7 May 2010 04:53 (sixteen years ago)

Among some sweet hauls today I got a copy of the Midas Touch 12" by Midnight Star. There is surface noise on the b side of this something awful, making this a perfect choice to try that glue on the record trick but I wouldn't dare on this.
