i feel kinda bad that i'm not on the hurley train. my brother loves him. my brother in law loves him. half the people here love him. i just never buy any of his records.

even the originals are becoming v v affordable, scott! maybe it wont be yr favorite shit, but armchair boogie and hi-fi snock uptown are pretty unassuming and wonderful! i guess youve heard em before, though, right?

ugh im having trouble w clarity today. that is NOT the steve tibbetts record i have, although my previous post makes it sound like it. i have like NORTHERN SONG or something. something on ECM.

Tibbetts rulez. love 'Northern Song', others are more ethno-guitar blowouts like a Buddhist Van Halen.

you're really not missing much with that hurley LP i posted up above, scott -- mostly late '60s demo versions, and they sound like it. he hadn't really figured out how to do funny songs with memorable hooks in them yet, apparently. but yeah, a couple of his '70s albums are pretty great; i kind of lost the thread after snockgrass in 1980 though.

Anyway, re Hurley, Have Moicy! might be my favorite folk LP of the '70s -- every song is unforgettable, and lots are hilarious. Don't have Long Journey anymore, but I liked it back when I did. I'm thinking he started and wound up less energetic than I like, though.

(Of course Moicy! has Peter Stampfel, Jeffrey Fredericks, etc., too, so maybe Hurley purists don't count it as one of his albums; I dunno. And some people like his sleepier stuff way more than I do.)

i think pretty much every hurley album is great, but agree that parsnip snips is one that is skippable, at least as skippable as any. i think his last two studio records, Ida Con Snock and Ancestral Swamp are excellent. So are his Rounder LPs, Long Journey and Snockgrass. And his classics on raccoon/wb, of course. both should be easy enough to get via the Mississippi Reissues.

can't really listen to my hurley records w/o getting bummed out these days though :\
