newish blue The Ex best-of double LP is ace, still in heavy rotation crate. srsly re-try, now more than ever

Snop Snitchin, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

i guess urgent/frenetic sounds too STRIDENT to me or something? i dont know, there's no real good rubric for what i immediately like, etc! probably ill be jockin the ex so hard in 6 months, ordering vintage ex shirts on ebay etc

69, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

jockin' the ex

Mr. Que, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

done that a few times havent we all amirite

69, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I hear you .. nobody likes to be PREACHED at, but w/ The Ex, I dunno it just kinda works. as part of the whole package. plus they are just so lovable and genuine about it, they aren't like I dunno "Rage Against the Machine" or somethin

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

I love the Ex. I'm OK with political music though - love anarcho-punk stuff like Crass, Conflict etc. The 1st Ex album sounds a bit like early Crass.

Most of my Ex stuff is on CD though. I only have Aural Guerrilla on LP. And the new 7".

Colonel Poo, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

amazing free Ex show in NYC Lincoln Center a couple summers ago, in Ethiopian mode -- they are a band I will always go see.

recent record treats:

I think this will be good, barely scratched the surface

Snop Snitchin, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

most of my Ex stuff is on CD too! like ALL of my Ex stuff, except for this new Mississippi reissue and a copy of 'Too Many Cowboys' I bought years ago.

there is a record store next to my house that had like every Ex release on CD. so I slowly just bought them up figuring, fuck it, I wanna support this place, plus I just wearied at the idea of hunting down all of the original LPs on eBay or whatever. Plus their CD packaging is pretty rad. Stuff like the '1936' thing, which replicates the original book that the vinyl came with. Or 'Dignity of Labour' which comes in a box with all the orignal inserts, etc...

^ pretty good finds at on the corner in san jose. seemed obvious that they came across a bunch of semi-embarrassing 80s vinyl purged from some local college radio station's back stock and were selling most of it for 50 cents apiece. i doubt any of it is worth much in resale value- 'KSCU' is written huge on all the covers and there are stickers and comments all over- but i was pretty happy with what i came across. the dj comments on the pat metheny/ecm stuff are worth the price alone

penguin cafe orchestra - music from the penguin cafe
niiiiiice

69, Monday, 5 April 2010 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

^ i love that album, so stoked. that wim mertens record is very similar actually, really liked that one too

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Monday, 5 April 2010 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

cool! where is on the corner anyway? i only know the ones on bascomb: streetlight; space cat; and that old record barn place??

69, Monday, 5 April 2010 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

on the corner is in campbell technically i guess, on e. campbell near the 17. kind of a gold mine even just for their normal (non-50 cent) stock, which is priced very very reasonably. i hear if the owner is there he's really great about recommendations, being friendly etc.

and ugh, al's record barn is such a bummer- dude closes at like 4 and is a total dick about it (seriously YELLING at people because he didn't want to hit traffic, and there were at least 8 customers in the damn shop). i guess records there used to be half-off sticker prices (which are RIDICULOUS- $15 for a phil collins album kind of thing), but we were told they did away with that just last week (!?!?) so my advice is to completely avoid the place. found a $10 copy of 'no pussyfooting' there tho.

streetlight was ok, but i think i was expecting more.

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Monday, 5 April 2010 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

agreed on all counts. i found a sealed howling hex 2 for under $10 and yoko's FLY for $20 in the past couple months at streetlight, so that definitely wins for san jose. im hittin a scrabble tournament in campbell in may; ill have to check out on the corner.

wilter, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 04:35 (sixteen years ago)

yer typical chugging lo-fi gubbins, not sure how it compares to the LP though as i haven't heard it..

from the unhip (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 04:39 (sixteen years ago)

the how was pretty fun at the SF slumberland show

69, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

how is this, ian?

bug holocaust (sleeve), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

what is this, ian?

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

where did you mention this, ian?

skot: link4u http://www.myspace.com/kitchensfloor

from the unhip (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 23:09 (sixteen years ago)

it is mentioned on the rolling psych/drone/freak thread.

it's awesome, kinda?? it's kinda raga-psych, explicit sandy bull *& spacemen three influences (they say so right on the sleeve.) chilean hippy kids. if their myspace page is to be believed, they found a kilo of coke & re-sold it to buy awesome vintage gear?

ian, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 23:33 (sixteen years ago)

Wow that band is pretty good! I want to hear more

van smack, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 23:39 (sixteen years ago)

i totally read "chilean" as "from a chill place or a state of chilling"

69, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

jesus christ amoeba was insane-o last night with good records

the young big bill broonzy 1928-1935 (yazoo)
a collection of mountain banjo songs & tunes (county)
possesion and poetry in madagascar (ocora)
bohannon -- dance your ass off
anthology of african music: ba-benzele pygmies (unesco)
musical instruments 4: flutes and horns (hugh tracey's music of africa series)

moving has depleted my records-fund while i wait for the old security deposit, etc, so i seriously left 10-20 amazing african records in the bins. all the good ocora/unesco shit was priced like $18-25, so i dont feel like it's the deal of the century or anything, but if you want some really beautifully recorded african music, check out the SF amoeba international section this weekend!

just back from the Chicago Independent Radio Project record fair, got there way late, was hungover, only hit two vendors, still got some good finds, will drink less tonite and go back tomorrow for sure:

Buffalo Springfield - s/t (real clean VG+ copy on 1841 Broadway for 6 bucks! totally excellent starter until I have enough spare cash to actively hunt down a "Baby Don't Scold Me" version)
Meredith Monk - Turtle Dreams
Muhal Richard Abrams - Lifea Blinec (on Arista, never even knew this record existed! god bless Michael Cuscuna)
David Bedford - The Odyssey
Raszebrae - Cheap Happiness or Lofty Suffering (one of the few records from xhuxk's book that I *don't* own! we shall see....)
Jack Traylor and Steelwind - Child of Nature (after just talking about it the other week -- there it was! 4 bucks. i'm psyched to hear it)
Kensington Market - Avenue Road
Billion Dollar Babies - Battle Axe
Lol Creme/Kevin Godley - Consequences (like xhuxk, I've been on a big 10CC binge myself the last couple weeks, always wanted a copy of this, one of my good record collecting buddies swears by it so we shall see. beautiful box...)
Roy Orbison - Mystery Girl (sealed copy, 3 bucks)

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 11 April 2010 00:50 (sixteen years ago)

stupidly didn't bring enough cash, and saw a few fishes that i left in the pond even in the short time I was there. going back tomorrow for sure

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 11 April 2010 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

johnny osborne - truth & rights
sweeney's men - the tracks of sweeney

robert bly is mrs. doubtfire? (Matt P), Sunday, 11 April 2010 07:23 (sixteen years ago)

got stuff for the store today and a couple of things for me. got lots of dollar 45s. rock, soul, etc. nice stuff at the flea market. i actually spent the most money today on this one woman's childhood 45s.

anyway:

danny o'keefe - american roulette (only have a test pressing of this and needed a regular copy cuz i am number one danny fan)

badings/raaljmakers - evolutions & contrasts (nice to find for a dollar! cool electronic 60's stuff on limelight)

joe diorio/wally cirillo - soloduo (jazz guitar dude i've never heard of. 70's. spitball records!}

prelude - after the gold rush (trio on island from 1974. don't think i've ever heard it)

martin bisi - creole mass

shawn phillips - furthermore

clyles & lenny - it isn't the same (guitar and violin duo on columbia. never heard them. with poster!)

nemperor label sampler (don't even know why i bought this. i have the tommy bolin and lenny white tracks featured here and don't really care much about the rest.)

menace - doghouse (laswell, le blanc, bootsy, etc)

tyrone tystick brunson - sticky situation (siked to get this for a dollar. classic track "new wave disco punk funk rock")

riot - fire down under

meadowlark lemon - my kids ("po' folks disco"!)

fats domino 2lp greatest hits

universe city - s/t

dynasty - adventures in the land of music

back street crawler - s/t

milton nascimento - milton (needed this. two bucks!)

the dingoes - five times the sun

backstreet crawler - the band plays on

frijid pink - s/t (have this but i can't pass up a minty copy for six bucks. this record used to sell for money!)

heads hands & feet - s/t (double album)

freddie king - 17 hits (federal singles. very cool for 2 bucks)

oliver lake - life dance of is

feelies - only life

odyssey - hollywood party tonight

flux - uncarved block (actually paid 12 bucks for this from the people who used to own main street music in northampton. they still sell at shows and online. they were at the flea market. plus, it's unopened and i have worn my original copy OUT. one of my fave albums of all time. 12 bucks seemed worth it. bought the feelies record from them too. couldn't remember if i had it on vinyl! i think i do. oh well. it's a minty promo. i can always use a spare or something.)

found a sealed melvins album at the flea market today. that's always good to sell. got lots of clean classic rock for the store there too. and those cool singles. good day overall.

scott seward, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

what label is that oliver lake on?

never gotten into danny o'keefe, but i've listened to a few of his records.
"Stoo" of "Stooz Records" (old store in the east village) is #1 Prelude fan.

ian, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

Prelude's After the Goldrush was a big hit in Britain in '73, so their records are relatively plentiful and cheap over here - Owlcreek Incident is well worth a pop if you see it.
