^ Oscar Brand came with a Audio-Fidelity catalog - so much cool stuff. I gotta get some of these Mohammed El-Bakkar joints.

cynthia pannell - storybook village

skot is this a promotional thing for one of these places?

Stormy Davis, Friday, 26 March 2010 05:33 (sixteen years ago)

i always dig the two-lead vocals on the same song thing that hughes/coverdale did. more bands need/needed to do that.

Stormy Davis, Friday, 26 March 2010 05:36 (sixteen years ago)

Audio-Fidelity ... hmm .. I think I have the Fred Gerlach lp (wasn't that on Audio-Fidelity originally, before Folkways?) and the Train Sounds series. no idea about their catalog otherwise. who WERE they? and what else is interesting?

AUDIO FIDELITY RECORDS bring you unsurpassed sound reporduction - with new
positive microphone techniques, emphasis on clarity, brilliance and quality
of recording consistent with maximum definition and minimum distortion, realizing
the ultimate in signal to noise ratio, plus advanced engineering techniques
to maintain maximum level and dynamic range. Pressed on pure virgin vinyl specially
formulated to result in the long wear of the high frequency groove etchings
as well as the long life of the recording.
Audio Fidelity records...the highest standard in high fidelity.

^above text should be right justified to achieve original effect.

Stuff on AF that I like besides Oscar Brand: Leo Berry's Giant Organ (ok lol), Lionel Hampton, sum Cha Cha Cha records, Dukes of Dixieland, and of course you can't forget Johnny Puleo and his Harmonica Gang (as seen on SCTV's Ocean's Eleven parody). I know that I have "A Date With Eddie Cantor" but I forget if it is any good.

The Doctored for Super Stereo sound effects records are certainly classics of their own weird little niche.

The Larry Adler lp is sure to be good as well as the Satchmo jamz and the Lord Invader. There are prob some cool Jo Basile tracks out there.

The thing in this catalog I really need to hear other than the El-Bakkar is Bobby Christian's "Strings for a Space Age"

AF has really nice jackets, btw. Sweet glossy covers and durable hi-grade cardboard.

sambal oobleck (los blue jeans), Friday, 26 March 2010 06:13 (sixteen years ago)

agreed about the great jackets! just an odd label

just a bunch of random stuff cobbled together in terms of "it all sounds really great" ... so boutiquey, kinda like Mississippi!

Stormy Davis, Friday, 26 March 2010 06:23 (sixteen years ago)

I guess it could seem random but I think it was centered around "stuff that we think dudes aged 25-39 in 1958 will like / use to show off their stereo".

sambal oobleck (los blue jeans), Friday, 26 March 2010 07:02 (sixteen years ago)

right but again I think that whole concept might be a first! in terms of the concentrated *diversity* of those selections and the *marketing* on the fidelity of them ?? dunno. heck do i know -- only have the four records, like i say, but was always mildly curious about the label ...

Stormy Davis, Friday, 26 March 2010 07:24 (sixteen years ago)

i think i still have that larry adler album in the store. it's a great sounding album. the faux-arab stuff is good. had most of them in here at some point. most people bought them for the sexxxy covers.

love how the version of "watermelon man" on sunbelt becomes total kosmik stoner flute jam. it's 7 minutes long and i kinda wish it was the whole first side of the album.
