man this really belongs on that 70s west coast folk/psych/country whatever thread, if it's not already. everybody knows they first got together through Skip Spence right?

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:10 (sixteen years ago)

i think 2010 is the PERFECT time for an all out ILX-wide doobie brothers reclamation project. such a great band in all their eras.

2010: Year of the Doobie

scott seward, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, and their records all SOUND so amazing, thanks to Ted Templeman. I think that S/T Doobie Brothers record has to be the first thing he produced after leaving Harper's Bizarre, and he was already a master of the studio. that record is definitely the most folkie they got, they needed Tiran Porter to join before they really started rocking. He is such a joy to listen to play the bass

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:30 (sixteen years ago)

they do sound friggin' amazing. templeman was a genius. i like it all. does jaxon have this 12 inch?

scott seward, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:38 (sixteen years ago)

as far as production goes, doobies were right up there with steely and the eagles. get a clean first pressing of any of their albums and it is all bliss.

scott seward, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:39 (sixteen years ago)

surprisingly or not, i don't own a single doobies record. not that i don't enjoy them every time i hear them. i'll rectify that soon, i promise

Damn you guys - that's two records posted overnight (eurotime) that just went in the great 2010 'you have to clear some space' charity shop donation - and now I want them back.....(the Doobies and the Sandpipers)

sometimes you can forget the simple things in life, like, oh yeah, aretha franklin made some of the greatest music of the 20th century!

I like this jedi mind tricks album! reminds me of non-phixion. like it a lot more than similar def jux stuff.

that ohio players album i was playing was kind of a stinker though. early 80's cover of sittin' on the dock of the bay is pretty blaaaaah.

A Dinosaur Victrola, listening to...

I just picked up a copy of that Richard Thompson LP for $1 over the weekend. It's waiting patiently a little ways down my to-be-played pile.

that's my very favorite richard & linda thompson album. and "night comes in" is by far my fave song by them.

scott seward, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

now playing: arthur blythe - in the tradition

scott seward, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

night comes in is right up there with calvary cross for me.

69, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

i just tried to play a tackhead album from 1990 and had to take it off. oof.

i'm sure this is a "duh" question, but you have the CoDoNa records, right?

jaxon, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

definitely the second and third, but im not sure i have the first one? with the wood grain, right?

69, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

ya, i think that's my fave of the 3. i don't have any solo walcotts, what are they like?

jaxon, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

this one's good, but not as good as the codona records. don cherry's on all the recordings with him, along with abercrombie/danielsson/romao, so it's a good full-band sound, but the sitar and tabla are way more out front than in the codona stuff. a little drier, more minimal, but occasionally that makes it a little aimless?

does it have John Sebastian doing "Welcome Back"? that might have been my first ever "favorite pop song" as a kid. my folks had the 45 and i used to play it constantly. many times in a row

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 11 March 2010 00:24 (sixteen years ago)

I still have a "Welcome Back" 45!

playing this now though:

just finished:

http://www.stonesthrow.com/uploads/images/product/detail/minimal-wave.jpg

really dug the first side, my interest started to wonder a little throughout sides 2,3,4. Not sure if that's just means i'm not much of a hipster or if they front-loaded the thing.

now:
