http://www.hollowearth.org/woebot_images/kraut/roedelius.jpg

listened to two times in a row earlier while doing my taxes -- after the comment on that Roedelius thread the other day that he was great to listen to while doing work. but i just kept feeling anxious that I wasn't paying enough attention to this "background music" that was great and deserved more investment than i was giving it. i probably shoulda been playing AC/DC instead

LOVING this album -- from 1977. I don't think I've heard another disco LP with a sound so deep into Southern soul blues, yet so uncompromsing about its disco. Plus, it's totally hilarious, and not just because of "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)" (Joe tries but she keeps knocking him down by accident so he tells her to go get herself a big fat man) and "Be Cool (Willie's Dancing With A Sissy)" (who apparently Willie thought was a woman, but Joe tells him just ease away politely -- seems Willie's about to pull his razor out at first):

Christgau says another song has Joe chopping off his own hands, and another one has an old lady throwing sauerkraut cans at a mugger's head, but I'm pretty sure I haven't gotten to those ones yet.

xhuxk, Friday, 5 March 2010 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

Also I got my copy for just 20 cents couple weeks ago, at a 5-for-$1 sale at Antone's! (Sorry, had to brag.)

xhuxk, Friday, 5 March 2010 15:06 (sixteen years ago)

Actually though, the two albums I've been playing the most in the past 24 hours are these. But I've been playing the CDs, so they don't count here, and I won't post their covers (which would look cool if I did):

(Various) – Street And Gangland Rhythms: Beats And Improvisations By Six Boys In Trouble (Smithsonian Folkways reissue ’06)
(Various) – The Sounds Of The Junkyard (Smithsonian Folkways reissue ’07)

listened to joan armatrading. CRANKING "me myself i". sounded so amazing.

now playing leonard bernstein's MASS. never heard it before. starts out pretty friggin' crazy.

scott seward, Friday, 5 March 2010 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

i love jade warrior. if you want the rocky stuff you need the first three vertigo albums. after that they set adrift on memory bliss a la the album jaxon was playing. those mid to late 70's albums are pretty cheap though. i would take a chance. i like them a bunch. proto-new age and lots of interesting pothead majik going on. i can't sell them AT ALL here, but what are you gonna do.

scott seward, Friday, 5 March 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

MASS is kind of a mess, i'm taking it off. i don't know what lenny was thinking.

scott seward, Friday, 5 March 2010 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

the thing about Jade Warrior's 'new agey' stuff, is it's not like relaxing at all. it's kinda mellow, prog w/world influences, and then all of a sudden 2 cranked up harmonizing guitars blow the shit outta everything.

jaxon, Friday, 5 March 2010 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

I never picked up any Jade Warrior LPs after 'Last Autumn's Dream'. I've always been kinda scared. Dunno why ... I am sure I would probably like them

Stormy Davis, Friday, 5 March 2010 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

i've decided i'm gonna buy them all. never been disappointed. even w/shitty covers like those ones. and i'm gonna buy all john martyn albums.

jaxon, Friday, 5 March 2010 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

especially since last night wifee threw something down from our loft and it landed on my JM 'sapphire' album and broke it. i got real mad at her and made her feel really bad and then smirked and said "it was only a dollar"

jaxon, Friday, 5 March 2010 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I think it was those covers. big mean-lookin' asian dude scared me away
