i can't help you guys today i've been listening to CDs. i know, right? someone brought in flipper blow'n chunks on cd and since i've always just listened to the tape and haven't heard it for a long time i needed to hear it. sounds so beautiful. definitely on my list of bands that when i'm listening to them i think irrationally to myself man why do other people even BOTHER? you know?

and now i'm listening to my early maggots best of maggotron cd. cuz i love it so.

i totally agree about flipper, definitely one of my favorite bands of all time.

Over a three year period in the late 1990s, Charlie Brooks embarked on two long field recording trips in Madagasikara. Brooks primarily concentrated on the more remote north and west regions of the island. Upon his return in 1999 he pressed 200 copies of a triple record and stored them under his bed for the last ten years. In anticipation of putting out a full run of a single lp version (MR-067 Fajanana) we are distributing a limited number of copies. There are three themed Lps: Vocal, Valiha Marovany and Miscellaneous Instruments. Comes with a sixteen page booklet of photography and notes.

i need to revisit end of an ear -- i only heard it once, five or six years ago, and it just sounded a little awkward or not as soulful as the other wyatt stuff (which i had just gotten into then)

Don't know about the Goofus Five, label just lists "Orchestra Accompaniment". Not western swing though, more of a tin-pan novelty tune. On Emerson # 10287 (circa early 20s I guess? copyright on label is 1918) Nice use of the slide whistle and woodblocks for comedic effect on Mollie ("She likes her music blue"). The flip is a vaudeville song with dialog bits (broad racial caricature) about a guy who just came home from WWI (which makes me want to date this a bit earlier, maybe 1919). His gal is giving him a hard time because she isn't getting her 30 bucks a month since he turned in his uniform.

xp Well, even though Bernard and the Goofus Five were on that Western Swing comp, they've got the earliest cut on it (1927), and I get the idea from the liner notes (which lump them in with Emmett Miller) that they're there more as a (possibly blackface? -- no photos on the LP) minstrel show precursor of the genre than as an actual participant.
