I'm gonna give it another listen, but sadly, Xgau's Sly Fox LP review seems pretty much on the money:

Let's Go All the Way [Capitol, 1986]
From thumping stop-and-go bottom to gleeful Beatle allusions, the title track is the most far-out piece of music to break pop all year, and you keep waiting for the rest to go . . . somewhere, if not all the way. I'm not saying the filler isn't as meaningful as Bootsy gone romantic or Levi's gone doowop. But it sure doesn't convey the same sense of adventure. B-

Uh, actually I'm not sure what those Bootsy and Levi's things he said referred to. Also, my copy (bought for $1 of course) turns out to be warped, so I can't listen to the side openers (including the hit, which I fortunately still have on a 45).

That Peter Wolf LP is really good, though! Joe Ely synthy AOR-hack sellout LP is...weird. Really want to like it, because I like the idea of it, but I'm not sure whether the songs are gonna kick in. That Lipps Inc album doesn't have anything anywhere near as great as "Funkytown" --actually sounds more like generic disco that I would have predicted.

Xgau Sly Fox review is a B-, not a B, btw (hard to tell on my browser, where the minus winds up on another line.)

Also, Lipps Inc cover "How Long" by Ace (written by future Squeezer Paul Carrack). I'm not really sure why, though.

i was so happy to find a copy of looney tunes by telex for 2 bucks a couple of weeks ago. the temporary chicken 12 inch has been one of my fave things for years.

i actually reviewed looney tunes in spin when it came out! it's great. but i still like neurovision more (esp 'moskow diskow', one of my favorite songs of all time.)

and chuck after you brought up that pete shelley record i found a copy last week AGAIN for two dollars. i love that album. hadn't heard it in years. and i repeat, way better than his first solo album despite homosapien being a great song. i think every song on XL 1 is good to great. "what was heaven" is so awesome.
