nah. more like todd rundgren w/o the hysterics. white girl soul. i guess her voice has a folksy quality about it though. that record has labelle backing her.

my first shepp tbh, and i wonder why i avoided him for so long!

always suspected he might be overrated, but this record is pretty good

i can't say i'm an expert on shepp, but i really dig Attica Blues and The Cry of My People. they're these big messy concept pieces that use gospel choirs, r'n'b song writing, funk and mix it all up w/freejazz in that super spiritual early 70s way (think Max Roach's "We Insist! Freedom Now Suite" & "It's Time" or the 2 Eddie Gale records)

ive heard attica blues before, i think, but wasnt blown away? it was like 5-6 years ago, though. im interested in hearing MAGIC OF JUJU.

I'm gonna give it another listen, but sadly, Xgau's Sly Fox LP review seems pretty much on the money:

Let's Go All the Way [Capitol, 1986]
From thumping stop-and-go bottom to gleeful Beatle allusions, the title track is the most far-out piece of music to break pop all year, and you keep waiting for the rest to go . . . somewhere, if not all the way. I'm not saying the filler isn't as meaningful as Bootsy gone romantic or Levi's gone doowop. But it sure doesn't convey the same sense of adventure. B-

Uh, actually I'm not sure what those Bootsy and Levi's things he said referred to. Also, my copy (bought for $1 of course) turns out to be warped, so I can't listen to the side openers (including the hit, which I fortunately still have on a 45).

That Peter Wolf LP is really good, though! Joe Ely synthy AOR-hack sellout LP is...weird. Really want to like it, because I like the idea of it, but I'm not sure whether the songs are gonna kick in. That Lipps Inc album doesn't have anything anywhere near as great as "Funkytown" --actually sounds more like generic disco that I would have predicted.

Xgau Sly Fox review is a B-, not a B, btw (hard to tell on my browser, where the minus winds up on another line.)

Also, Lipps Inc cover "How Long" by Ace (written by future Squeezer Paul Carrack). I'm not really sure why, though.
