gotta say, the private-press scene is still very intimidating to me, but i think this record is pretty good?

69, Friday, 22 January 2010 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ private press 'scene'

where do i start with swamp dogg?

Joint Custody (ian), Friday, 22 January 2010 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

i've got a best of that's pretty great. not the one pete posted upthread. i can't find an image of it, but i'm listening to it now. he's inside of a hot dog and it's called 13 prime weiners or something. i was told Total Destruction To Your Mind is the one to get though

also he produced this doris duke album which is pretty great

jaxon, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:05 (sixteen years ago)

the greatest hits i posted above is not a greatest hits album at all wah wah

my swamp dogg opinion is like this (based on the seven LPs i have):
rat on = cuffed collared and tagged > total destruction > gag a maggott = have you heard this story?? = greatest hits???? > im not selling out...

69, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

patti reid s/t

Irish folk from 87, largely a cappella with sparse guitar or flute on some tracks. great version of "The Snow It Melts The Soonest."

Joint Custody (ian), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

xp about the private-press "scene," there's just so many random records out there, and i have no idea how some of them float to the top, except that it's pretty arbitrary. i guess i sort of feel a little bit at sea, and like i dont quite trust my aesthetics yet to mean anything to anyone else, absent signifiers like LABELS or ARTISTS or GENRES or something?

69, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

i don't collect private press funk records.

Joint Custody (ian), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

but i'll buy almost any private press lp with dobro or steel guitar.

^^ much much more TRAD than any other DC record ive ever heard. great playing, well-recorded, but not as EXCITING as the wildin-out shit.

69, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

i've got 3 copies (2 sealed) of a private pedal steel album by joe goldmark (i believe one of the owners of amoeba records). they used to be in the country section all the time for free.

lemme know if you guys want one.

i'll take one off yer hands tbh

Joint Custody (ian), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

just listened to it again. it's really good. lots of soul covers (beautiful version of 'you are everything') and a great cover of the beatles 'something' with a really tweaked out phased guitar solo. pretty psychedelic. whole thing's kinda funky.

jaxon, Friday, 22 January 2010 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

hangover finally subsided after lunch. able to listen to tuxedomoon's 'half mute'

ruth copeland - self-portrait

what an amazing album.

and this copy was sealed too. i'm a lucky duck.

i really need a copy of i am what i am. i'll find one someday!

scott seward, Friday, 22 January 2010 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

how are you supposed to put a record in a bag? Hole on top or hole on the side?

I assumed hole on the side so dust doesnt get in them, but then the bag slips off when i slide them between two records...

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 22 January 2010 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

xp abt ruth c: "The album presumably was recorded during the same sessions that produced Parliament's debut album, Osmium."

whoa!

69, Friday, 22 January 2010 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

i do record in paper sleeve, behind jacket, in plastic sleeve. both the paper sleeve and plastic sleeve have holes on top, and the jacket is oriented however seems most reasonable for the cover art

69, Friday, 22 January 2010 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

ruth's version of the silent boatman....ah!!! it's just so beautiful. the orchestration, the acid p-funk moments...eddie hazel... (cuz even on the psych folk moments you get eddie backing her up.)

just amazing.

and i don't want i am what i am on cd. even if it is on cd. they are pricey online though. i'll find one!

scott seward, Friday, 22 January 2010 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

im sure u want a better copy than this, but...

I'm listening to "Play With Fire" from I Am What I Am and umm it's kinda enormous.

Möbius dick (╓abies), Friday, 22 January 2010 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

taken as a whole, "Möbius dick (╓abies)" is terrifying
