One day shy of 11 months, my little girl took three perfect little steps this mornings.

Awesome!

Woo! Howie didn't do that til almost 15 months!

Archie has learned to sit up for about three seconds before toppling forwards/sideways :)

Nice work supergirl! I think our little girl was also around 10 or 11 months, she was standing for a few seconds at 9 months. She thought standing was the business and would ham it up for a crowd, little monkey.

After walking a few times on Friday, she totally refused to do in on Saturday. I guess she mercifully inherited her mother's modesty.

Our Alice was 8 months when she took her first steps.

Blame her big sister for leading by example, I guess.

big development for our 19-mth-old is jumping. he's been trying to figure it out -- including by throwing himself headfirst off of elevated surfaces onto cushions or into our arms -- but the other day he started just hopping like a bunny. it's hilarious to watch him hop all the way down the hall and back. (not sure the downstairs are so amused - ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom.) he only gets maybe 3-4 inches of elevation, but he's excited about it.

Very impressive (and vaguely threatening)!

Meg (Meg Busset), Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Is Ben demanding a separate part of the home wireless network now or something?

(Not only is Ben reading and writing, but his letter formation is terrific (jokin' aside). The "B" and the "E"! I hope Ava gets challenged soon at school - she's bringing home these packs of "high-frequency words" to practice reading - "and", "Dad", "but", "cat", etc. Words she could read over 18 months ago. We're practising writing them instead.)

Michael Jones, Monday, 23 November 2009 13:19 (fourteen years ago) link

LOL.

Okay, bragging (but in a funny kinda way): Elisabeth ate some "real" fruit (instead of pureed) the other day. I had bought about 98408940984 kilos of fruit. I had noticed she was grabbing at it. When I came home, she grabbed a banana. My husband asked if she wanted one, she said yeah... and ate some. In the evening she ate some apple. She's two. Granted, she's been eating it in the creche for a while. But I am damn proud/happy she's succumbed. hah. No more pureed fruit for her. :-)

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 23 November 2009 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Still not walking as preferred mode of locomotion, though it's surely gaining. I had read and heard that once those first steps are taken, full-on walking all the time would happen in a matter of days. Not so in this case. Also, after her one-year check-up yesterday (nearly two weeks after the mark), the MD suggested we work on her vocab, which so far is limited to "dat" (probably "that", but sometimes I let myself believe otherwise), "gud" and the infrequent "shit".

there's a better way to browse (Dr. Superman), Saturday, 19 December 2009 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

They're worried about her vocab at one year?! Howie didn't say more than a couple of words til he was about 18 months. Now there's no shutting him up. After asking him if he had a good time at a friend's recently, he sighed and said, "It was quite unremarkable."

Archie, meanwhile, has worked out how to crawl... backwards. This annoys him no end as he ends up further away from where he was trying to get to.

Meg (Meg Busset), Saturday, 19 December 2009 23:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I think she meant that for the 18-month check-in vocab should be a goal, but it came across at first as "Why isn't your baby answering my questions for herself?"
She's finally realized that books are good to look at as well as chew on, so no worries there.

We recently took Ben to get evaluated for some of his speech difficulties. While the therapist was testing him (using a family of dolls), I suggested that she write a command down on a piece of paper for Ben. She looked skeptical, but wrote "Put the girl on the couch" on the paper and showed it to Ben. He looked at it, and then put the girl doll on the couch!

Not sure if this belongs in the bragging thread or the life with an interesting child thread, but...

Amazing stuff. I'm kinda pinning my hopes on Ben solving all the world's energy/urban environment/transportation problems by the time he's 15 with his super-brain!

Ava continues to love robots. In case you're wondering, the robots are restricted to visiting Pealand, Chickenland and Donutland (the icons attached to their hearts), hence their consternation at the rebellious dude on the left just kinda taking off on his own.

This summer Ava has read:
The first three Harry Potters
All 13 Lemony Snicket books
A couple of Roald Dahls*
8-10 other kids' novellas, including Blyton, Brian Earnshaw's Dragonfall 5, Judy Moody

(* - losing track of these, as she was dipping in and out of the Dahls and Tove Janssons earlier this year before she got with the whole read-from-cover-to-cover programme)

She didn't really get on with The Hobbit, so we took that back to the library, unfinished.

Not sure what to make of her ploughing through these books at this rate. She's definitely reading rather than skimming but I wish she'd ask more questions - she can't be getting it all.

Michael Jones, Saturday, 27 August 2011 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

okay. how old are Ava and Archie. I'm sure Beats was talking looooooooong before she was the Henry is now and all Henry says is 'Thank you' 'You're Welcome' and 'I'm Done'. Last weekend he said 'outside' but in a a perfect ET voice. Like imagine ET say 'phone home' when you say 'Oooouuuuutssiiiiiiiiiiide'.

I was a fast reader, and I definitely was shit at retention, but reading for pleasure is reading for pleasure, right?

schwantz, Monday, 29 August 2011 20:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Ava is six and a half. She's been reading since she was two years ten months (as in, recognising words on signs), fairly fluently since three and a half.

Tallulah is three months away from her 5th birthday and is nowhere near this. As in, just about able to manage very short words (if she's seen them recently in pictorial context) and her name and her sister's name, but totally flummoxed by anything over three letters. She's a daydreamer. Makes you wonder about what they say about low birth weight... I'm sure her genius for physical comedy will get her by.

(Actually we're not worried at all; I think Lulu is just an average, goofy four-year-old, Ava is just wired a bit differently. Plus I suspect Lulu end up being better at maths than her sis).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

It's all so random! Ben started reading at 1.5 yrs, and now the only reason Owen can read too (at 4.5) is that he's so competitive. And of course, the difference in their artwork is pretty stark. And they are IDENTICAL TWINS! Of course, there's the whole brain tumor thing...

OH SHIT I have a brag. Not as cool and cute but still:

so about 6 months ago I find out about recyclebank which weighs each households recycling and credits them with points which can then be used like cash at supermarkets etc.
so in a moment of madness i shoot off an email describing the general idea to our city's head of waste management. now to implement this every house will need an new recycle wheelie bin and the city will need new recycle trucks that weigh the bins. im thinking there is no way its going to happen but I figured Id make her aware and put stress on 'the natural state' really needing to up its environmental game as well as this may help some people a little in this shitty ass economy.

The woman write me back within an hour or two. Shes says shes never heard of program or any like it is and asks me to give her more details. Some more contacts.

Well, I didn't hear from her again. I pretty much forgot about it until last week when we and every house hold in north little rock, received a letter from the city, faux signed by the mayor, stating that in April NLR will be implementing the recyclebank program. new bins, new truck, points for buying shit! HOLY CRAP. LOOK AT ME MAKING A DIFFERENCE. I AFFECTED A WHOLE FREAKING CITY.

AMERICA THE LAND OF CIVIC OPPORTUNITY I LOVE YOU.
