Perennial sleeping giants and serial losing finalists Mayo take on Dublin tomorrow, 3.30pm. Beg, borrow or steal a stream, marvel at the brawn and desire of the amateurs on the park, ask yr friendly GAA posters what the hell it takes for a foul to be called, why hands are allowed and how knowing when to take yr point is a key cornerstone of malevolent irish rural psyche.
Enjoy the match. Boo the Dubs. Mayo, god help us.

The mayo player everyone is raving about is the redeveloped aidan o'shea, always a fielder of note but physically reconditioned over the summer to a cross between longcat and a sherman tank. His fetching of the high ball above a forest of thuggery is rivalled as a sight this year only by his can't-fail method of seeking out opposition defenders to run over on his maraudings.

Agreed on the stoppage time
it was deflationary for us imo, to be one down and maybe two minutes to play I think we could have used the urgency to push one last time
With six to go, it was a real sense of dubs in ten ascendancy and even if we snatched one - and let's be real they never looked like letting that happen- there was no trouble to the dubs to hit us again and then another few mins of holding us off.
The three minute the ref added, it was over at that stage tbh

Xpost There might have been 2 minutes actually. Yknow yourself the ref is always going to give the other team a chance to score in a game that tight.
I was watching the game with my dad and when Dublin were playing keep ball in the dying seconds he said "ah they shouldnt be doing that". THATS EXACTLY WHAT THEY SHOULD BE DOING
― Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Tuesday, 19 September 2017 10:29 (three years ago) link
yeah it was more curiosity as to their existence rather than lumping you all in together.
i do kinda think dublin did what they had to do. and if they had to do more they would have. they don't play with wild abandon in the finals under gavin, they never have. they just put themselves in a position to win, in the last 5-10 minutes, and usually take the opportunity. read jim mcguinness there talking about mayo throwing it away in the last 10 etc, and having the job done, and it's kinda silly. i don't have stats to hand but i bet dublin score a heap in the last 5-10 minutes. they have beaten the likes of kerry by 6/7 points having been level on 62 mins. a lot of that is the bench but they're also incredibly calm.
xpost the keep ball really irritates people but it's actually effective. two years ago in the semi-final they did that for 6/7 minutes and sucked the entire mayo defence to one corner of the midfield then passed to kev mc and he scored a goal.

xpost to deems re "curiosity about their existence"
McGuinness is right about what Mayo have to learn but I think his use of that game to support the thesis was 100% forced and incorrect.
Nobody in the country thinks that you can shut down this Dublin team with 7 minutes left to play and only two points in it, and certainly no Mayo fan wanted us to try.
The moments that mattered, where it felt like we had a chance, were when we were dominating the midfield battle, Keegan goal, and the two seconds prior to Vaughan's moment.
I don't think McGuinness's suggested tactics would've worked as he says and I don't think we could have had the success we did in the game with that mentality.
tbh subbing McLoughlin and Moran felt like bad calls at the time, and seeing how we never really got through ye again after that I'm inclined to call them out as confirmed mistakes.
― passé aggresif (darraghmac), Tuesday, 19 September 2017 10:48 (three years ago) link
LBI have you watched it back yet!
I think McGuinness overstated the thing a bit too - there were times where Dublin were a bit rattled but no more than during the games of recent years. Two years ago Mayo scored a goal second half and pushed ahead. Last year in both matches they had spells of dominance. But he is the high priest in the cult of "cause chaos in the Dublin ranks" - he's been dining off being the only person to beat Gavin for a long time.
― Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 19 September 2017 10:58 (three years ago) link
The unstated fact is that it takes a hell of a lot to play this Dublin team that way. Add the bench they have into it and it's not tactical nor individual failure when they come strong at the end of a match, it's absolutely inevitable.
― passé aggresif (darraghmac), Tuesday, 19 September 2017 11:19 (three years ago) link
Watched it last night! Of course not nearly as entertaining when you know the score already. Plus I miss the extra added tension of having a favorite side. Still, I thought especially the second half was great fun. I thought it was strange how Mayo played in ET. They seemed out of it, all of a sudden, bit all over. O'Connor was great. Vaughn's red was so stupid.
Discarding that I knew the outcome already, Mayo just never looked like they'd nick it the last 15 mins or so.
