Qatar doesn't stand a chance. Jap/SK "just" hosted one. Australians cares less about soccer than Americans, right?

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Monday, 29 November 2010 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

wouldn't Qatar have to build hella stadiums? and then wouldn't they just lie fallow from that point on, forever? giving them a WC only encourages that sort of reckless expenditure

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Monday, 29 November 2010 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

the story I heard is their stadiums would be designed to be taken apart and given to less-fortunate areas in need of playing space

fuck that, USAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

USA "just" had one as well. Would go Australia for minimal sleep for a month. I bet Qatar would have awesome stadia.

ailsa, Monday, 29 November 2010 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

Australia, though Qatar makes a surprisingly persuasive case in the ads - Zidane pleading for the youth of the middle east to be given its chance, which is obviously how it'd work out irl

well the US hosted sixteen years ago, vs SK/JPN hostin in 2002. I suppose by 2022 that eight year diff will seem less pronounced.

mostly I want it here so I can go to games. duh.

Wtf?! Paddy Power are the only bookies running this and they suddenly have Qatar as red hot favourites - last time I looked about a week ago, USA were top, Aus second, Qatar about 8/1 and Japan & Korea nowhere, but now it's:

Qatar - 4/7
Australia - 2/1
USA - 6/1
Japan - 40/1
Good Korea - 40/1

Qatar's odds've shortened again, slightly:

Qatar - 4/6
USA - 7/4
Australia - 9/2
Japan - 40/1
Good Korea - 50/1

Huge swings in US/Aus odds overnight - my conclusion is that no-one gives a toss about 2022, and Qatar's position is entirely down to the arab a hoy hoy getting all nationalistic with his 50 dirhams.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 11:31 (eleven years ago) link

What time will games be played in Qatar in connect w/ European times? If it is at a time better than Aus can provide, they are sorted.

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 11:33 (eleven years ago) link

Qatar is only one hour different from South Africa so timing for Europe shouldn't be a problem.

but hosts do no longer qualify automatically? sort of bummed about that, as i was going to predict Qatar advancing through group stage thanks to 2 dubious referee decisions (one referee from Guinea, one from Tahiti) as well as 7 naturalized Brazilian players.

yeah and also failed the provide enough $$$$ bribes (you'd think they could've done something for us there!)

.. beginning to like the absurd bizareness of this whole Qatar thing though. (for example hadn't until today realized it was soooo small)

Ludo, Friday, 3 December 2010 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

i kind of like beckenbauer's idea of having the tournament in january. i'd like to see players in mid-season form once in the WC

con suelo, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 03:18 (eleven years ago) link

When it comes to bidding for the next tournament, a country with a sense of humour should put together a satirical bid based around park football and jumpers-for-goalposts, but openly promising €10m each to the thirteen corrupt members, and see how far it gets. I'd've proposed Ireland 2026, but fear that may be a financial burden too far.

I'm not sure the headline framing and use of statistics is particularly helpful, tbh, even if the article is a bit more nuanced. Qatar should be held accountable for failure to follow through on its commitments and the recommendations stemming from domestic and international scrutiny but it's pretty much the only country in the region making commitments or opening itself up to that kind of scrutiny in the first place.

Group G is wild.

Norway failed to beat Latvia at home, so sit in third place on 18 points, behind Turkey on goal difference.

Netherlands were cruising to automatic qualification but have just conceded two goals in four minutes vs Montenegro, so they’re on 20 if it ends like this.

Norway play Netherlands in the last game. If they win, and Turkey beat Montenegro, Netherlands would be out.

No easy games in international football.

Elsewhere, I'm faced with the possibility that Scotland might actually be quite good. However. Even though Adams scored (again) I still think we need a centre forward. We don't have really have any centre backs either but Clarke's main selling point is his skill at organizing defences.
