and yet...

That was so satisfying :)

Has there been anyone better at rounding the keeper at speed and slotting home?

I know I'm being a po-faced humourless bore but during the World Cup draw when the BBC mbm guy referred to him as the fat Ronaldo I got really annoyed at such disrespect.

pandemic, Friday, 13 December 2013 06:37 (ten years ago) link

He was the the first "Best Player in the World" I was ever aware of as a football fan so I think he'll always be on a pedestal for me.

So many finishes in that clip where he seemed to barely even glance towards the goal before gunning it in but each time you feel that he couldn't have picked a better spot. Crazy precision.

Windsor Davies, Friday, 13 December 2013 10:07 (ten years ago) link

The fuckin burst of pace tho, jesus. I remember him first time round but youd want reminding.

Best player

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 December 2013 10:30 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I think we all need reminding, its been all nasty remarks about the guy the last few years

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Friday, 13 December 2013 11:05 (ten years ago) link

Dya think? Well yeah I suppose in mainstream coverage maybe. I mean obviously there's the fat jokes which are unnecessary and unwelcome but a lot of the time I see his name mentioned these days it's fairly respectful stuff about how in terms of sheer talent he was one of the all-time greats. Just that his career didn't quite pan out how ppl thought it would.

Windsor Davies, Friday, 13 December 2013 11:21 (ten years ago) link

I think his career panned out pretty well though. Aside from a terrible performance in the 98 WC Final (what happened there? did he have some sort of breakdown before the game?) and he was hampered by injury when he went to milan. ronaldinho - theres a guy who burned bright but too brief.

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Friday, 13 December 2013 11:31 (ten years ago) link

Ronaldo is one of four players to have won non-consecutive world cups. Ronaldinho could still join that number.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 December 2013 11:55 (ten years ago) link

Not sure if michaels being sarcastic there everyone loves fatron
Not sure if windsors being sarcastic there fatron is acknowledged as one of the very greats and backs that up careerwise regardless of injuries or w/e

#YOLTMB (darraghmac), Friday, 13 December 2013 11:58 (ten years ago) link

Not trying to be to sarcastic nor to cast aspersions on Ronaldo's considerable career achievements but his time at the very peak did feel kinda short, or at least curtailed.

Between 1998 and 2002 there were two and a half / three seasons blighted by injury and his career as a top level superstar was effectively over from the age of about 28.

All I meant was that during that 2 year period with Barca and then Inter he looked like a player who would end up right there in the firmament. Which he sort of is now but less so than might have been had he maintained that form across the course of his career.

Windsor Davies, Friday, 13 December 2013 12:20 (ten years ago) link

not being sarcastic, it just seems like anytime the dudes name is mentioned it has to be followed up by some LOLFATTY remark but yeah we kid cos we love i guess

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Friday, 13 December 2013 14:33 (ten years ago) link

Saw every homegame when he played at PSV. He controlled the ball so easily, at speed. It seemed it was pure luck in the beginning cause it looked kinda clumsy, but he kept doing it so it turned out to be pure class.

knaaq (ryanrandom666), Friday, 13 December 2013 23:33 (ten years ago) link

Aside from a terrible performance in the 98 WC Final (what happened there? did he have some sort of breakdown before the game?)

an inquest by the Brazilian National Congress found that having returned from lunch on the day of the game with roommate Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo suffered a fit in which his entire body convulsed uncontrollably and the striker began to froth at the mouth ... A more plausible explanation is that the Brazilian had a bad reaction to an injection to assist a nagging knee injury, administered as it was only 10 minutes before the seizure.

I don't think I knew this last detail, I always understood it as likely a panic attack

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:32 (ten years ago) link

Pretty sure I remember that when they did the team photo after the handshakes directly before that game Ronaldo could barely bend down.

pandemic, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link

I remember the official teamsheet with 45 mins to go had Bebeto and Edmundo up front, which was switched out after the deadline for Bebeto and Ronaldo with 30 mins left. The BBC's talking heads were all 'lol what a surprise' and 'who saw that coming' as if it happens every game, let alone a World Cup final
