Am currently watching the Chicago Fire vs. DC United in the first round of the playoffs. Does anyone else on ILX follow the MLS?

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 01:54 (thirteen years ago) link

PS Fire 1, United 0 at the half.

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 01:54 (thirteen years ago) link

We've all totally lost interest because our glorious hero David Beckham is no longer involved. Sorry.

Just got offed, Friday, 26 October 2007 01:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's right, my team kicked his broke ass out on Sunday.

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 01:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Any excuse to watch this again.

Just got offed, Friday, 26 October 2007 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link

is blanco playing? soccernet isn't working for me right now

gbx, Friday, 26 October 2007 02:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Golaso de De Rosario

Blanco started, but he hasn't had much of a game thus far.

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm marginally interested. when my town, seattle, gets a team in '09 i'm sure i'll be way more into it

jergïns, Friday, 26 October 2007 03:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Some friends of mine saw (the US) Chivas this last weekend. Said it was straight bollocks.

admrl, Friday, 26 October 2007 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Welcome, shit-talking British people.

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 04:40 (thirteen years ago) link

The game ended 1-0. DC put in their goal-scorers in the second half but they didn't do much of anything either. Leg 2 is in a week in DC.

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, it occured to me that Brits ought to know "bollocks" football when they see it, considering their national team.

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, the British National Football Team has a long and varied history.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

"Brits" = the English. No Scots would call themselves "Brits".

everything, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry, you're right.

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

First round:

Chivas over KC
Revs over NY
Houston over Dallas
Fire over DC

After that, I don't know.

dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Any excuse to watch this again.

Great free kick, not sure about this "upper 90" term instead of the traditional "postage stamp" or even "top corner".

Is that Tim Lovejoy MLS show still on?

onimo, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Conference finals are set:

✧✧✧@✧.✧.
K.C.@Houston

NE looked assy in their 1-0 win over New York. Aside from the fact that the Fire have to play in their huge, empty stadium, on turf, I think they have a great shot of breaking the playoff curse vs. the Revs. Houston should roll over KC.

Yes, I'm going to New Jersey to watch like 7 hours of MLS tomorrow, since our first game isn't until Apr 5.

dan m, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

Similarly, if Riquelme plays for Argentina in its June 8 friendly against the U.S. at Giants Stadium, all it will take for him to reject any move is one look at the dreadful, patched-up, threadbare, NFL-logoed carpet that passes for a soccer field at the Meadowlands.

ahahahahaha

Seattle Alliance, Seattle Republic and Seattle FC beaten out by popular opinion. New Team:

mizzell, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:56 (twelve years ago) link

Dan kind of sold me on Emerald City FC, I don't think it got a fair chance...but good for them, anyway. Nice work chucking the proverbial monkey wrench in the league's plans.

Laurel, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

Although I did read a decent rejoinder from a Seattle fan somewhere who said they were happy that E.C.F.C. didn't get picked b/c they'd be spared all the teasing and the stupid jokes (especially when KC came to town).

dan m, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

even though i voted for just seattle fc, i'm happy with the name.

Laurel, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

Oh god, I'm not sure since I haven't followed the team for that long, but I remember reading a reference somewhere online to calling the team the "Rhythm"? GAG

dan m, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

YES, that's what I was thinking of. Can you imagine? SO MANY JOEKS, I CANNOT DECIDE

Laurel, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

i was watching that game on the telly. i thought the streamers fiasco was pretty funny. Actually it was a pretty decent game, although I'm perfectly aware that the "open" style of play was down to no defending on either side whatsoever.

Whoever the guy in that video was ranting is a total fuckwit.

LOL:

In a pair of sweeping changes brought about by a Major League Soccer season in meltdown, the Los Angeles Galaxy today removed Alexi Lalas as team president and general manager and Ruud Gullit as coach.

In its official statement on the changes, AEG, which owns the team, said that Gullit had resigned "for personal reasons" and that Lalas' contract was up at the end of the year and that the team decided to part company now rather than wait.

I didn't see it, but apparently the Quakes/Vancouver game tonight was complete lunacy.

I want to change my display name (dan m), Thursday, 16 July 2020 03:24 (four months ago) link

have they just decided every 2nd half is going to have 10 minutes of stoppage now? cos they scored the winner in the 9th minute of stoppage tonight, Orlando had 10 minutes of stoppage last night, which seemed absurd considering the drink break wasn't THAT long, and only one goal, typical number of substitutions, a few short injury stops.

It's a pretty regular thing ime, the broadcast will be f-ing around with a replay or some BS and a goal will be scored off-screen.

Fire had about 15 mins of good play tonight and that wasn't nearly enough, even though it seems like nycfc is mostly bad too. Them playing at Red Bull arena is hilarious.

I want to change my display name (dan m), Sunday, 30 August 2020 03:57 (two months ago) link

Also to save money the away team broadcasters (well, for the Fire at least) are rarely on site even in non pandemic times.

mega LOLs today with Brad Guzan failing to save a ball shot directly at him and appearing to shit the ball into the goal

pass the cur's dossier (Neanderthal), Sunday, 30 August 2020 04:10 (two months ago) link

It was a bizarre situation. Junior Urso scored and the ref seemed to have ruled the goal out, so he started complaining and play restarted off-screen. The commentators were discussing why it might have been chalked off and were told later that it had counted. idk how they got all the players back in their own halves and kicked off again in the time it took to show a replay.

The referee was appalling. An Atlanta player was kicked by a high foot hard enough to leave stud marks in his neck, while in the penalty box - the ref gave nothing, was told to look at it again on screen, and still gave nothing. Orlando deserved to win overall, though.

year is a clusterfuck. asterix or no, thrilled beyond fuck for us to have 38 points in 21 matches.

Cincinatti, meanwhile, got shut out for the 14th time in 22 games, and have only 11 goals this year. the record for fewest was DC in 2010 with 21 in a 30 game season. yowch.

That Orlando v NYC penalty shootout was probably the most farcical sporting moment I've ever seen

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 21 November 2020 22:07 (six days ago) link

Utterly ridiculous.

I'm happy we won but for a ref to not know the rules...and he's a two time referee of the year winner

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 November 2020 23:01 (six days ago) link

The fact he didn't realise another penalty needed to be taken was *chefs kiss*

Glad Orlando won though, they got gypped for the keeper being sent off. What utterly repugnant refereeing. Hilarious seeing the Orlando manager dancing into the tunnel in sheer delight only having to come out and relive the anxiety again tbh

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 21 November 2020 23:10 (six days ago) link

Oh yes let's not forget that he forgot they can't bring on a sub keeper cos they used all their subs!

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 21 November 2020 23:12 (six days ago) link

Lol yea. I understood why OCSC was confused (the game initially "ended" on a NYCFC miss so the misremembered that they were actually shooting second) but the ref not realizing was ridic. NYCFC having to point at the scoreboard, lol

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 November 2020 23:13 (six days ago) link

Having a CB make a game winning save is a new one.

Most entertaining league in the world

I want to change my display name (dan m), Saturday, 21 November 2020 23:46 (six days ago) link

lol @ all of the articles coming out sharing PRO's defense of the ref clarifying a) why Gallese got a yellow (MLS still using 19/20 rules as season started in 19/20 season) and b) why Rowe couldn't be subbed in. Fair enough on A, but the reason everybody was yelling at how bad the ref was had less to do with his calls and more to do with him seeming not to know any of the rules and going back and forth no less than twice on whether Rowe could come on, or signaling game over at 5-5. his handling of the Rowe situation felt like it took a half hour.
