Am currently watching the Chicago Fire vs. DC United in the first round of the playoffs. Does anyone else on ILX follow the MLS?

PS Fire 1, United 0 at the half.
We've all totally lost interest because our glorious hero David Beckham is no longer involved. Sorry.

The game ended 1-0. DC put in their goal-scorers in the second half but they didn't do much of anything either. Leg 2 is in a week in DC.
― dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link
Also, it occured to me that Brits ought to know "bollocks" football when they see it, considering their national team.
Yeah, the British National Football Team has a long and varied history.

First round:
Chivas over KC Revs over NY Houston over Dallas Fire over DC
After that, I don't know.
― dan m, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link
Great free kick, not sure about this "upper 90" term instead of the traditional "postage stamp" or even "top corner".
Is that Tim Lovejoy MLS show still on?
― onimo, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link
Conference finals are set:
✧✧✧@✧.✧. K.C.@Houston
NE looked assy in their 1-0 win over New York. Aside from the fact that the Fire have to play in their huge, empty stadium, on turf, I think they have a great shot of breaking the playoff curse vs. the Revs. Houston should roll over KC.

Similarly, if Riquelme plays for Argentina in its June 8 friendly against the U.S. at Giants Stadium, all it will take for him to reject any move is one look at the dreadful, patched-up, threadbare, NFL-logoed carpet that passes for a soccer field at the Meadowlands.

In a pair of sweeping changes brought about by a Major League Soccer season in meltdown, the Los Angeles Galaxy today removed Alexi Lalas as team president and general manager and Ruud Gullit as coach. In its official statement on the changes, AEG, which owns the team, said that Gullit had resigned "for personal reasons" and that Lalas' contract was up at the end of the year and that the team decided to part company now rather than wait.

― pass the cur's dossier (Neanderthal), Sunday, 30 August 2020 04:10 (five months ago) link
It was a bizarre situation. Junior Urso scored and the ref seemed to have ruled the goal out, so he started complaining and play restarted off-screen. The commentators were discussing why it might have been chalked off and were told later that it had counted. idk how they got all the players back in their own halves and kicked off again in the time it took to show a replay.
The referee was appalling. An Atlanta player was kicked by a high foot hard enough to leave stud marks in his neck, while in the penalty box - the ref gave nothing, was told to look at it again on screen, and still gave nothing. Orlando deserved to win overall, though.

Cincinatti, meanwhile, got shut out for the 14th time in 22 games, and have only 11 goals this year. the record for fewest was DC in 2010 with 21 in a 30 game season. yowch.

I'm happy we won but for a ref to not know the rules...and he's a two time referee of the year winner
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Saturday, 21 November 2020 23:01 (three months ago) link
The fact he didn't realise another penalty needed to be taken was *chefs kiss*
Glad Orlando won though, they got gypped for the keeper being sent off. What utterly repugnant refereeing. Hilarious seeing the Orlando manager dancing into the tunnel in sheer delight only having to come out and relive the anxiety again tbh

Lol yea. I understood why OCSC was confused (the game initially "ended" on a NYCFC miss so the misremembered that they were actually shooting second) but the ref not realizing was ridic. NYCFC having to point at the scoreboard, lol

lol @ all of the articles coming out sharing PRO's defense of the ref clarifying a) why Gallese got a yellow (MLS still using 19/20 rules as season started in 19/20 season) and b) why Rowe couldn't be subbed in. Fair enough on A, but the reason everybody was yelling at how bad the ref was had less to do with his calls and more to do with him seeming not to know any of the rules and going back and forth no less than twice on whether Rowe could come on, or signaling game over at 5-5. his handling of the Rowe situation felt like it took a half hour.
