and once Argentina sort their shit out and win the 2014 WC he will be rightly crowned as the modern Pele/Di Stefano.

he might have even have gone in. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 20:21 (ten years ago) link

messi is just the latest in a line of luxury flair players with a poor work ethic. he will settle comfortably into his inevitable 'cult player' niche before long, most likely after the world cup. i would liken him to a le tissier or a ginola.

aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 20:26 (ten years ago) link

A more muscular Arshavin.

iirc he made the most tackles of any player in la liga last season. (and iirc being a lol forward this meant he also made the most fouls.)

he might have even have gone in. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 20:32 (ten years ago) link

yeah yer rong there. ronaldo yes hes got a poor work ethic. messi no way, although rooney does trump him in the cant-believe-this-dude-is-everywhere-on-the-pitch stakes.

ok.

messi can't be touched atm- ronaldo is quicker, stronger, taller and maybe, just maybe, more effective overall, but skill wise messi can't be touched.

but you can't ever say this shit about jordan. sorry.

DarraghmacKwacz (darraghmac), Thursday, 18 March 2010 00:02 (ten years ago) link

ummm sorry but no. ronnie at his peak is not close to the messi of this and the previous season. only player i've ever seen that can be put on such a scale is henry 03/04, and i assume cryuff during the ajax triple/maradona 86/di stefano those 6 yrs in a row

I don't think I ever saw Henry d up like Messi does on the regular, but catching games was hard in this country in the early 00's.

ilxor lookin' boy (acoleuthic), Thursday, 18 March 2010 00:54 (ten years ago) link

iniesta with xavi as a brundlefly package, yeah for sure. not convinced about him as a lone candidate- even tonight it was clear that without xavi he's a notch lower of a player.

rooney nah. sorry.

torres nah sorry. as well to push for hasselbaink to be in there imo. not even sure about villa being in there just yet.

DarraghmacKwacz (darraghmac), Thursday, 18 March 2010 00:55 (ten years ago) link

the way i see it comparing iniesta and xavi is like comparing the sperm producing capabilities of your left baw vs your right baw. They work together so often that it's hard to apportion a greater contribution to either.

also if rooney contiunues his form this season i think he will have matched c ronaldo's 42, both quantitively and qualitatively.

DJ Get Up Kids (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 18 March 2010 00:58 (ten years ago) link

rooney gets back more, works more, extra string to his bow that makes up for being somewhat less skilled and somewhat less of a goal-threat than ronaldo.

DJ Get Up Kids (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 18 March 2010 00:59 (ten years ago) link

i agree re xavi/iniesta, but couldn't lobby for either alone in that tier.

if rooney continues his form this season he'll deservedly be in the running for european player of the year. a lot of players have been in the running for that in any given year since 2002. a stunning conversion from right back tho.

I'd still put Ronnie's peak above anyone who isn't Maradona for, I dunno, a sort of footballing charisma; but Messi's just rolling along forever a hair off that level.

The truth is, it all started with danni alves when 1 of my mates asked for a photo with the legned himself messi. danni alves was getting aggressive and was saying no no photo but 5 players around him were laughing and my mate thought he was joking and my mate was having banter with danni alves back, but danni alves kept getting more aggresive and took the cameraq of him and turned it of and pointed in his face and daid NO PHOTO I ALREADY TOLD YOU. i then approached messi for an autograph and as i approached messi barcelona security shouted oiiii and ran down the corider and then got me by the scruff of my shoulder and shoved me down the hall way. he got abit heavey handed and i was challenging him to get of me. as i was challenging him he then threw a punch at me in my face, infront of danni alves lionel messi and other players they were guarding messi as it was very heated and messi was piushed into one of the players rooms, where he was safe, after about 5 minutes of arguing and barcelona security getting heavy handed, he then pushed me away from messi and led e out where he got me into a head lock and messi popped his head out and had a grin on his face he must have thought. it was funny. as i was getting pushed and shoved out of the way barcelona security then re grabbed me and led me away.i managed to get him off me and escape.

wonder what kind of a year messi will have, hasn't had a full summer break in two years (losing the world cup and the copa america finals the past two summers).

trying not to be too overl-dramatic but it has dawned on me that he's currently at his peak, and that, depending on his fitness in the coming seasons, may not have that many great seasons left in him. which is sort of scary.
