so the way to get var to favour the attack is just to allow a player to be x offside when they're using var. you could even find out what x is by playing marginal decisions in real time to a bunch of linos and seeing what they think is onside. i don't buy that there isn't a sensible value of x that most people can agree on.
fuck knows what they're actually gonna do, if anything at all.

imo every set-piece into the box should be allowed to play out, and then pored over from seventeen camera angles by five different judges, who rank physical contact between players for illegality, and the outcome is a penalty at either end depending on who did more bad stuff. the process will last an economical fifteen minutes

the problem I have is modern sports insistence on exactitude. these are games, this is not DNA testing to exonerate someone on Death Row. watching frame by frame advances to find the little .00000000012 millimeter the player was actually offside doesn't really fit the spirit of the rule (and I don't think people realize that some of their favorite goals of all time might have been call back in the current system).
same with official time-keeping. most people who are avid fans can usually guess the amount of stoppage time within a minute based on how many people scored and how many injuries and substitutions there were, but we don't demand second-by-second accuracy to demand every lost second be replayed.
sure, if someone milks 45 seconds during 3 minutes of stoppage and the ref doesn't compensate for that a little, that's ridiculous, but...at the same token, the team that is chasing the match is doing so because they failed to do the necessary in the previous 90 minutes, so they have some culpability there as well.
I hate what modern HD tv has done to all sports. at least with American football, it's a sport that stops all the time anyway, but nothing's worse than being at a free-flowing football match and have it stop for fucking 5 minutes so someone can watch a movie. and nobody wants 12 minutes of stoppage time!

only thing nice I'll say is at least it isn't as mental as the NBA, which allowed refs to review three pointers from several minutes earlier and retroactively change the score.
i was at a game once, last few minutes, home team down like 3, and they reviewed a three pointer from several minutes earlier and determined it should have been a 2, so now they were down 4.

Premier League clubs are set to hold a vote at their annual general meeting next month on a proposal to abolish the video assistant referee (VAR) system from the start of next season.VAR has been used in the English top-flight since 2019, helping improve decision making but also generating persistent controversy. The 2023-24 campaign has featured many contentious incidents, which has heightened the criticism of VAR and led some teams and fans to question the competitionâs integrity.A resolution has now been formally submitted to the Premier League by Wolverhampton Wanderers calling for VAR to be scrapped this summer â and that will trigger a vote when representatives of the 20 clubs assemble for their yearly gathering, in Harrogate on June 6.A Wolves statement said the move came âafter careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, (referees body) PGMOL and our fellow competitors.âThere is no blame to be placed â we are all just looking for the best quoting stats on the correctness of decisions is a great way to ignore issues like how infinitesimal is the difference between correct and incorrect, how much the time spent adjudicating a 1mm offside interrupted the flow of a game, and whether those "correct" decisions were applied consistently across all teams and matches

it's not like "red for me" vs "never a red!!!" wasn't a debate pre-VAR, like the way they convinced lemmings this was good was pretending a humongous chunk of the sport isn't simply judgement call, the idea of a 'right call' fairy that will wave a wand and say 'this was the correct call, there is no room for debate, it is now settled'.
obviously some are black and white but these aren't the ones being screamed about. nobody was taping matches in 2015 on old VHS machines so they could frame by frame advance to look where someone's knee was when the ball was played.

It would have been 22-1 but there were a couple of borderline offsides where the keeper's view was deemed to have been obstructed

some enhancements we will probably see:
1) whenever the semi-automated offside detects a possible offside infraction, a recording is played through the stadium at 95 db that says
"ATTENTION: one of the players involved in build-up may or may not be offside, therefore everything that is happening right now might be for naught. Please hold your celebrations if anybody scores."
2) whenever there is a red card, the player is executed on the field, so there can be no rescinding of cards later

Polish official Bartosz Frankowski has apologised and begged for forgiveness after his arrest shame before Rangers' Champions League showdown with Dynamo Kyiv and explained why he and a VAR sidekick stole a road sign.Frankowski and countryman Tomasz Musial were supposed to be on the VAR team for the match in Lublin, but were arrested for drunken behaviour by local police and replaced. The pair are expected to be dismissed by the Polish FA now and Frankowski, who worked at Euro 2024, expressed deep regret at their moment of drunken madness.

This might help explain some of the more inexplicable VAR decisions happening worldwide.

This penalty decision given by VAR last night in the Chelsea game might just be the worst Iâve seen in the 5 years itâs been in use.The Chelsea player KICKS the FC Noah player and gets the penalty đ€ŠđŒââïžIrrelevant of the result. A comeback was really in the works before this took all the steam outta FC Noah. Shameful

More VAR nonsense. Fernandes is a mere shadow for that alleged Saints foul for the equaliser but the 'woke' VAR won't let football be football. It has had its day already.
