À la recherche du scamps perdu (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 22 July 2020 20:29 (three years ago) link

would be v weird and funny if the EFL decided to dock Wednesday 12 points now ofc, but that ain't happening

imago, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 20:30 (three years ago) link

Brentford have been amongst the worst chokers in history this season, they don't deserve shit in the playoffs

calzino, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 20:42 (three years ago) link

Sorry imago, that’s rough.

Perhaps Pontus Jansson has the secret of the classic choke.

You wouldn’t bet on Brentford even winning the playoff semis now, eh? Still hoping for a Watkins-shaped payout.

Tim, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 20:58 (three years ago) link

lol he sounds like the type of lad who wouldn't have choked in the 40's when it came to volunteering for the waffen ss!

calzino, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 21:04 (three years ago) link

Whilst at Leeds, Jansson has had a famous chant made for him, the song is called 'Pontus Jansson's Magic, He Wears A Magic Hat' (with a choking death's head insignia on it!)

calzino, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 21:07 (three years ago) link

Ha!

Tim, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 21:15 (three years ago) link

I remember fondly the season Brentford missed out on promotion from league 1 finishing second (cos of premier restructuring) and then we under uncle Neil, beat them in the playoffs on penalties despite being an absolute ragtag bunch of cloggers and went up at the expense of Bristol Rovers in the final, can't say we never get any luck really!

calzino, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 21:28 (three years ago) link

and my old classmate Chris Billy scored the winner at old Wembley

calzino, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 21:30 (three years ago) link

the last time I heard a report on Chris Billy he was doing a shitty telephone centre job and cursing that he never got into the electrical or plumbing trades rather than the dead end of being a decent lower league professional footballer who kept following Warnock to every club he went to in the 90's!

calzino, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 21:37 (three years ago) link

I think this might be the first time the entire bottom 5 of the Championship (with 20 days of season left) all avoid relegation. Although the compressed end to the season and Wigan points deduction were not the usual.

calzino, Thursday, 23 July 2020 08:06 (three years ago) link

Corberan is official

À la recherche du scamps perdu (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 23 July 2020 17:42 (three years ago) link

Oh I've not read anything yet, will do the new manager bingo when I get home. Obv getting the nod from the mighty Bielsa has got to be a good sign. You surely can't have three bad managers in a row, we are due a bit more managerial luck now!

calzino, Thursday, 23 July 2020 18:27 (three years ago) link

Oh Jeromey Corberon!

calzino, Thursday, 23 July 2020 18:37 (three years ago) link

Why the fuck is Trevor Francis trending on twitter when a: the cunt isn't even dead. And b: the mighty terriers have just installed a new manager!

calzino, Thursday, 23 July 2020 18:44 (three years ago) link

lol i checked, it's some Bluenoses having an eppy because they've retired Jude Bellingham's number

À la recherche du scamps perdu (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 23 July 2020 18:45 (three years ago) link

Lol that will wind up some of the worst cunts in this country, like it!

calzino, Thursday, 23 July 2020 18:52 (three years ago) link

if we hadn't let them equalise in the 93rd they'd be down

can someone else name next season's thread btw, I think I've suffered enough karmic punishment for rubbing the black cats' noses in it

imago, Thursday, 23 July 2020 18:59 (three years ago) link

Superb Swansea goal.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Sunday, 26 July 2020 19:13 (three years ago) link

imago, Sunday, 26 July 2020 19:24 (three years ago) link

imago, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 19:54 (three years ago) link

i think this might be the last ever competitive game at Griffin Park.

calzino, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 20:09 (three years ago) link

isn't that competitive

imago, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 20:10 (three years ago) link

Perhaps Pontus Jansson has the secret of the classic choke.

imago, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 20:26 (three years ago) link

XP LOLS!

a classical choker puts the tory white shite back in the game!

calzino, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 20:28 (three years ago) link

the mighty Warito abides

calzino, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 20:44 (three years ago) link

how lovely for west london

imago, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 20:45 (three years ago) link

you can't deny their transfer policy has been pretty impressive and canny, lots of champo clubs have spent their way into mediocrity. Including my lot (when they were a pretend prem club!)

calzino, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 20:49 (three years ago) link

matthew benham is tbf in actual fact a moneyball genius and he kind of deserves this

imago, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 20:51 (three years ago) link

yes he is a complete stain, but they have either been incredibly fortuitous in the transfer market or someone knows wtf they are doing! Saying that, we've been fucking pony this season and still took 4 pts off them.

calzino, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 21:05 (three years ago) link

we were even ponier and were 15 minutes from taking 6 off them

imago, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 21:07 (three years ago) link

Hoping effing Fulham get through because I can’t face wanting Cardiff to win. Don’t care what happens really, just desperate for Watkins to be sold. Desperate!

Tim, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 21:23 (three years ago) link

back in pre Rona times you could have have afforded yourself the luxury of a bit more patience and gamble on him being a success in the prem and yielding a better sell on cut, but them days are gone:( Rough times for league 1/2 clubs right now

calzino, Thursday, 30 July 2020 00:06 (three years ago) link

Apparently we're OK, survival-wise, we had put away some money from the last couple of lucrative sales, but this spell has blown through the savings; we released al our out-of-contract payers (seven from a not-huge squad) and it would be really nice to see a couple of replacements come in. Rough times mean it'd be a brilliant time to have a few quid of disposable income to spend on a few really good players.

Tim, Thursday, 30 July 2020 07:43 (three years ago) link

(Last lucrative sale = Watkins to Brentford, funnily enough, which was £1.75m if I recall correctly - the sums involved in L2 are laughably small compared to even the Champo. )

Tim, Thursday, 30 July 2020 07:45 (three years ago) link

I can remember when we were a L2 club being run by an asset stripping chairman. Just coming out of administration and with a squad of seven players. Then followed a massive transfer splurge with a net spend of fuck all. Then we sold Stead for 1.2m which seemed a huge sum then and probably was huge for the club at the time.

calzino, Thursday, 30 July 2020 07:51 (three years ago) link

Since more or less all the clubs in the lower leagues are loss-making enterprises, and most are owned by "local businessmen" of one kind or another, there is going to be quite a difference this season between those clubs whose owners' businesses are likely to do OK and those whose businesses are tanking.

Mansfield (insurance?), Forest Green (green energy), Salford (you know who) all seem to be spending rather freely so far so I guess they're all doing alright.

Tim, Thursday, 30 July 2020 08:11 (three years ago) link

Our local bête noire former chairman Ken Davy is considered a total villain in the town. I even saw him getting accosted on John William St once and some bloke was yelling: give us our stadium back you robbing cunt! In the local rag there was constantly stories about how his crooked loan company was breaking laws and illegally misselling loans and involved in all sorts of sharp practise etc. Anyway the Conservative Party missed a trick by running him against the universally despised safe-seat wasteman Barry Sheerman in the last election. That would have been the easiest red wall seat to take if they had even run a Shetland pony with a get brexit done blue rosette, anyone but Ken Davy.

calzino, Thursday, 30 July 2020 08:38 (three years ago) link

Oh look, calzino has another league club to go and watch if he gets bored of Huddersfield

imago, Sunday, 2 August 2020 19:26 (three years ago) link

I've been there before for preseason friendlies, there must have been some dramatic improvements made since I last went because that wasn't close to being a FL standard ground - although this was about 16-17 years ago. They are that posh you get to meet BBC producers and crime fiction authors in their local boozers, but they are no Bradford Park Avenue.

calzino, Sunday, 2 August 2020 20:16 (three years ago) link

getting there is not that "local" either, you are talking a fair journey on a clunking pacer train from Leeds!
