Top 3 qualify, 4th plays a home-away playoff w/ 5th from down south. Looking like that could be Argentina, Ecuador, or Colombia right now. Scary. All the remaining games are big in light of that, no-one wants to finish 4th.

Makes me wonder if Bradley could weather a storm of 3 consecutive losses at this point, probably not. I can't imagine who they'd get to replace him, though. Sigi?

― L'obamalâtrie obligatoire (Michael White), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
I've seen a couple episodes, it's decent. They kind of changed the overall emphasis of the show when they brought him on, it got a bit more US-centric.
― i am under no illusions that my opinions are even that interesting to me (dan m), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:45 (sixteen years ago)
He is kind of awesome in that when the inevitable callers get on and trash MLS/US soccer players, he usually stands up to them instead of joining in like Steve Cohen did. Cohen always seemed like he was playing the role of the loudmouth, and Wynalda is and always has been a loudmouth.
― i am under no illusions that my opinions are even that interesting to me (dan m), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:51 (sixteen years ago)
I like him on the show. He's funny, relaxed and a little irreverent.
― L'obamalâtrie obligatoire (Michael White), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah he is. I always preferred him over Harkes on the ESPN broadcasts.
About Beasley: there is a rumor that he's coming back to Chicago, since one of the Fire's long time midfielders has apparently switched away from his old number (7) that was DMBs during his time here. Other number 7s people are speculating about: Raul, Figo. If it's any of them, I'm hoping for Beas.

CONCACAF doing its part to kill the USA/Mexico rivalry. So sad.

oops, that's page 2 fyi
Under the new format, which has already been approved by CONCACAF, the U.S. and archrival Mexico -- the two soccer giants in this part of the world -- would almost certainly not meet during any of the qualifying games for Brazil 2014. Not even once.

A gregarious Santa Claus of a man, Blazer has a Trump Tower office, a squawking macaw named Max (you can often find him on Blazer's shoulder) and a blog where he posts pictures of himself with Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Prince William, Michel Platini and former Miss Universe winners. In the year 2010, it is good to be Chuck Blazer

I don't think it deserves its own thread yet, but the 2011 Gold Cup venues have been announced.
― dan m, Thursday, 16 December 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)
North American sides Canada, defending champion Mexico and the United States are qualified automatically for the Gold Cup, and will be joined by Digicel Caribbean Cup champion Jamaica as well as regional rivals Guadeloupe, Cuba and Grenada. Central America will determine its five qualifiers at the Copa Centroamericana January 14-23 in Panama.

Champions League final first leg tomorrow night, Salt Lake vs. Rayados De Monterrey. Has the potential to be a great series: best team in MLS for the past couple years and the best team in the Primera for the past couple of years (and they have Humberto Suazo!)

Suazo already forcing fingertip saves from Salt Lake.
Gridiron lines on the field is always kind of funny in Mexico.

o cool i didn't see the second equalizer. way to go rsl. yeah i couldn't believe that of these two teams, it's monterey that plays on an american football field.
― mizzell, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:09 (fifteen years ago)
The field they play on belongs to the Tecnologico de Monterrey, huge university who has the best Mexican American football uni team. I think the rayados are looking to get a different stadium.
― Jibe, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:14 (fifteen years ago)
That first sentence is very muddled. "which has the best American football university team in Mexico" is what it should say to be clearer.

Oh I have a really silly question, but everytime I see Real Salt Lake written i can't help but wonder how people in the US pronounce it: Real (as in Real Madrid) or real (as in opposite of fake)? Or some other way maybe? Sorry if this sounds really stupid. Also thanks for the highlights from last week. Loved seeing that stadium and team again.
― Jibe, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:41 (fifteen years ago)
Good for them but their name irks me. What is there either Spanish or Royal about SLC?
― Concatenated without abruption (Michael White), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:47 (fifteen years ago)
Mormons like gold? idk. Everyone I've ever heard says "Real" the Spanish way. I've seen blogs use it in the opposite of fake way, but in an ironic fashion. Everyone makes fun of it for being ridiculous and mis-placed, "Fake Salt Lake" is the standard dig.
I think they're gonna beat Monterrey tomorrow night tbh. They're pretty much impossible to beat at home. Both teams will missing key players, Beckerman for RSL and De Nigris for Monterrey, but Salt Lake is the deepest team in MLS and I don't think they'll have trouble adapting.
― Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 23:18 (fifteen years ago)
i don't have a problem with the name, mainly cause RSL works as an acronym, plus there are plenty of teams all over the world named for famous football teams (there's an arsenal in argentina, an everton in chile, etc). what confuses me is why they took the real name and the colors of real's biggest rivals.
