Sessegnon would have just been Walcott mk 2

Number None, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 17:34 (eight years ago)

some low key functional competency will be a refreshing change for England altho Ray Wilson appears to have died of outrage RIP

look I'm sorry it was only a joke (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 17:34 (eight years ago)

Rashford's fairly lucky to be in there based on this season's performances tbh

Number None, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 17:40 (eight years ago)

so's danny rose

ogmor, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 17:46 (eight years ago)

danny rose is lucky based on his career performances tbh

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 17:48 (eight years ago)

xps barnes has declared for austria iirc

nxd, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 18:38 (eight years ago)

think bertrand over rose and smalling over jones but dont have too much a problem with the squad

nxd, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 18:39 (eight years ago)

xps
RIP Ray Wilson, fucking Ingerland class of sixty-yawn and ex corpse shagging funeral director, and bloody true legend according to our lot, cos he did national service in the Middle east and the cunt only ever earned 6 pounds of rabbit lard and a threepenny bit per week. Build a statue etc ... yawn...

calzino, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 18:49 (eight years ago)

probably a bit harsh, but I had just read some abysmal comments by some prick who was also repping for Allardarse earlier and was at breaking point.

calzino, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 19:09 (eight years ago)

danny rose > ashley cole just never fit and seems to have his personality

gneb farts (darraghmac), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 19:39 (eight years ago)

not sure what I can do in the face of such an opinion other than FP

ogmor, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 20:38 (eight years ago)

I like bertrand but rose has looked v good in the past and looks to have a higher ceiling. he's mb coming back into form now

ogmor, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 20:39 (eight years ago)

one month passes...

pep guardiola has cost england a wc final

his fraudulent pretence that walker, stones and sterling (surrounded as they are by genuine class in a working system) are in any way good at their actual jobs put southgate in an impossible decision.

southgate should nonetheless have picked his best centre halves but you can see how that is a tough ask

sterling was prob always going to play but as the tournament progressed its clearer and clearer that he is a bad footballer without an actual position.

twenty tapins is fuck all use to an england team that doesnt set up tapins and where it takes seventy tapin chances to score him

if southgate learns from this and sticks to basic "pick best players in best formation" this could be a very good platform.

repartee is deft (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 20:52 (seven years ago)

Trippier too good to drop, Walker too expensive. Tbf to Pep, he has only started Walker in a three twice.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 21:12 (seven years ago)

Pep couldn't even be bothered keeping up the pretence with Stones

Number None, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 21:13 (seven years ago)

after that mandzukic goal he'll be known as standing stones wha

repartee is deft (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 22:09 (seven years ago)

Walker and Sterling were both great tonight, it was the footballers around them who weren't up to scratch. Put a Modric or Eriksen or KDB in there and they'd be world beaters, but no such English player exists.

All of England's problems now lie in central midfield but this has all been hugely encouraging.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 22:57 (seven years ago)

idk where youre getting that first statement, matt.

i dont think englands centre backs have had much to do all tournament and when it was time for them to withstand some pressure, they didnt.

both goals were errors, walker involved in each- i dont think thats just my prejudices (which only exist because he is bad at just this stuff- concentration and not making errors) talking.

admittedly its a managerial error to out him at cb, tho the argument that his pace is the reason might have some merit.

having both he and trippier defending deep crosses is a major issue tho, and under two high balls tonight that showed.

stones being left for dead by mandzukic, tho, jesus.

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 23:06 (seven years ago)

Hard to see how putting I dunno Smalling or Cahill or ShawX in there would have helped.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 23:09 (seven years ago)

too easy to say that theyd have won both headers! but even in the first half walker and stones were blind/short passing themselves into trouble.

theres more than maguire had earned a shot in a 3 and theyre ahead of the lads in your post above on merit (even just on the merit of havent been proven not to work, at least).

dyou think dele was a) injured all tournament or b) is not very good lately, and especially without eg eriksen?

not sure england alli is england level tbh.

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 23:23 (seven years ago)

There were plenty of occasions last night where Walker was there, outpacing the Croatia attackers and able to get to the ball ahead of them, snuffing out the attack in the process. I thought the back three in general moved the ball around well under pressure and helped turn defence into attack. Its significant that England didn't really resort to just lumping it upfield at any point.

We needed high ball playing defenders because what England transparently lack are central midfielders capable of moving the ball around quickly under pressure and really controlling the game, let alone a playmaker or anyone capable of playing a really incisive final pass. An energetic but limited player like Henderson was hopelessly overworked and I don't think Alli had a very good tournament.

Sterling's final ball was often bad but he was England's best attacking outlet and they were blunted when he went off. Croatia were struggling to deal with him.

Matt DC, Thursday, 12 July 2018 06:41 (seven years ago)

ts significant that England didn't really resort to just lumping it upfield at any point.

breaking character to say, eh, that's what they did for the entire game. even when they were playing well. if you did a stastical analysis of pickford's kickouts i'd say he had about 30 and played 28 of them long, as long as possible. in the first half england bypassed midfield and pressed croatia's defence into having to lump it past midfield also.

i thought walker had a poor game. sterling looked extremely dangerous first-half but he makes such consistently awful decisions on the ball he might as well be aidan mcgeady sometimes. got that maddening thing where he shoots the time he should pass then next time passes the time he should shoot to make up for it.

FernandoHierro, Thursday, 12 July 2018 07:16 (seven years ago)

Pickford's the exception there I think, his distribution was extremely wasteful - TBH I don't really have any major arguments with Southgate's tactics or starting XI decisions, it's more about the players who aren't there because they just don't exist in this country.

Matt DC, Thursday, 12 July 2018 07:19 (seven years ago)

OTM about that particular habit of Sterling's though.

Matt DC, Thursday, 12 July 2018 07:20 (seven years ago)

i think it's fair enough whatever way they want to play, but there looked to be a really determined long ball plan in the first half. sterling was way advanced and they kept hoofing it to him. it was working for a while but as croatia dropped deep the signs were there, even after a forty minutes or so, that they were going to dominate the ball and control the game. loftus-cheek might emerge and improve that side in the next few years, he uses the ball a bit better than some.

FernandoHierro, Thursday, 12 July 2018 07:22 (seven years ago)

Also I think there's a difference between a decisive direct plan based on long passes (and they played plenty of short ones in tight situations as well) and ignoring the coach's instructions and just hoofing it because you can't think of anything else to do. Previous England defences would have been doing that pretty much from kick off.

Matt DC, Thursday, 12 July 2018 07:27 (seven years ago)

I didn't know Fernando Hierro was Irish till this morning.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 July 2018 07:39 (seven years ago)

Have England got any youngsters coming through who are creative midfielders?

Grealish maybe?

groovypanda, Thursday, 12 July 2018 08:47 (seven years ago)

Wilshere

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 08:51 (seven years ago)

winks isnt that but he is imo a possibility as a decent metronomic passer in a different formation

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 08:51 (seven years ago)

Phil Foden

cajunsunday, Thursday, 12 July 2018 08:52 (seven years ago)

arent there other injuries affecting that team reasonably significantly, tbf, tbf

rose fit for a start really changes things ito energy, ground covered and opposition stretched

lallana not the messiah but def the closest ye have to that missing player

AOC prob takes a sluggish Alli out of the running two games in, if hes not a starter in the middle

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 08:55 (seven years ago)

Lewis Cook could get there or therabouts in time maybe.

Matt DC, Thursday, 12 July 2018 08:56 (seven years ago)

foden is the great hope but when I've seen him play he's been more of an attacking mf

dele knows how to milk moments perfectly and get an edge. won the fk last night.

ogmor, Thursday, 12 July 2018 08:58 (seven years ago)

think cook, winks, ward prowse prob more in the henderson role/area than any putative luke modrich

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 08:59 (seven years ago)

dele is a good deal better than a moments player, but hasnt been for some time now.

agreed that in those moments hes quite advanced for an english player in getting the required result

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 09:00 (seven years ago)

I keep forgetting that Harry Winks exists and he plays for us. If he'd been able to keep up the momentum from the first half of this season he would probably have been in the squad.

Matt DC, Thursday, 12 July 2018 09:03 (seven years ago)

havent seen enough of (AM)RLC to know where he might sit

rashford development in the short term also dictates how the team might set up

course the next tournament will have a first xi full of players weve never heard of tbf, sean dyche probably working on the next england back four as we speak

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 09:04 (seven years ago)

xp no doubt at all winks makes the squad, quite possible he makes the first xi given injuries besides, but tbh youd need to see if he kicks on next year or not. still absurdly light on games.

for now hes prob best put down as dier-level option but in a cm passing role as opposed to enforcer

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 09:06 (seven years ago)

whens the season start lads my bloods up

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 09:06 (seven years ago)

ross barkley lads

heh

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 09:07 (seven years ago)

dele's got that delish contempt and guile. I think the best thing about the england team has been the positional play and the runs. they were uncharacteristically fluid for a lot of the tournament & the maguire-stones-walker defence performed much better than I expected

ogmor, Thursday, 12 July 2018 09:07 (seven years ago)

all fair as is what most of matts been saying tbh

but stones walker fears arent based around the most of what they do, its the two things a game they do.

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2018 09:09 (seven years ago)

sean dyche probably working on the next england back four as we speak

He's got that Andrei Tarkovsky guy in this team already.

says more about shots on target than england, but lol nonetheless

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 13 July 2018 20:22 (seven years ago)

How does that stat even work when England have scored 12 goals in 6 matches?

Iain Mew (if), Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:47 (seven years ago)

That’s from open play so free kicks, corners and penalties excluded, I guess. That’s how England scored most of their goals.
