That's too bad. Was hoping at least that a couple Atlanta players would get injured ahead of next weekend.

At Schweinsteiger's introductory press conference a reporter asked him if he thinks he can help the Fire win the World Cup.

welp the goal was to fill the bowl at the Pride match today, and despite Marta arriving and actually playing in the second half, didn't come anywhere close. 14,452, nowhere near the 23,403 record we set last year. even despite running a ticket promotion where you bought one ticket and got two 50% off.

disappointing af. entertaining match though. I got to do the rally tunnel.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 22 April 2017 23:42 (nine years ago)

lotsa Orlando-ites smugly wagging their fingers at me today saying "It's Earth Day Birth Day" (a "legendary" Orlando concert series with terrible bands), only to forget that the opener where the record was set was opposite EDBD too last year (and it went opposite the headliners!).

Yankee Stadium reduces soccer to pinball.

Larin just got his 5th goal. Christ he will be gone soon.

And there's 6

Neanderthal, Sunday, 23 April 2017 19:00 (nine years ago)

Rivas and Kaka!

idk how much of our fortress at home is us being great vs seemingly every game being in 95 degree weather at 4 pm (in the old stadium we had a lot more night matches) but I'll take it.

I thought this article was fairly spot-on across the league: http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/the91stminute/2017/05/how-each-mls-club-strives-and-struggles-to-find-authentic-identity/

The Fire seem to be lurching forward like some oddly constructed soccering Frankenstein, but against the odds their shadow Buying Club approach appears to be working in 2017. Snapping up Dax McCarty and Juninho and then paying top 5 MLS money for Bastian Schweinsteiger is just the sort of thing an LA Galaxy or an NYCFC would do, which means we maybe reconsider the Fire as a *gulp* Buying Club if this becomes a trend. Their roster doesn’t appear to have any unifying approach to it, and it certainly doesn’t value any one thing over the other, but the Fire don’t seem particularly concerned with longevity at the moment. They’re built for about a two or three-year title window before starting over.

This is so awesome; DC United's opponent in the 4th round of the Open Cup tonight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christos_FC

Christos FC is an American soccer team based in Baltimore, Maryland that competes in the Maryland Major Soccer League, an affiliated league of United States Adult Soccer Association. Founded in 1997, the team is composed of ex-professionals and local college players in the Greater Baltimore area. The team colors are green, gold and black. The team takes its name from Christos Discount Liquors, a liquor store owned by businessman Nick Christopoulos who serves as the club's main financial backer.

just weird the target city is Austin

why do you think Austin is a weird choice? don't know much about it, but it's a big city with no pro sports team, and i can see an owner thinking that Austin could develop a supporter culture like Portland. Plus, lots of Latinos.

mizzell, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 14:23 (eight years ago)

Just that it's a smaller market than Columbus and they've already folded one lower-division team there.

I want to change my display name (dan m), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 14:56 (eight years ago)

have to think that austin will overtake columbus soon (though i don't know how the size of market is determined). it already has a larger metro area population and while growth has slowed down since 2000, it's still the fastest growing city in the country.

mizzell, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 15:08 (eight years ago)

Ffs no one is relocating a team to Austin bc of latinxs, it's flush with white tech brother money

I should note: I fucking hate the Crew. Some of the worst moments of my soccer-watching life have taken place at Crew Stadium. I still think they're being done dirty by their owners and it's indicative of larger problems with the game in this country.

infinity (∞), Friday, 8 December 2017 19:08 (eight years ago)

it wasn't last year.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 8 December 2017 20:48 (eight years ago)

But Toronto FC are better than they were last time. They have improved over the course of 2017, showing a willingness to progress and develop almost as soon as they’d suffered defeat in last year’s MLS Cup game. “To be completely honest, I think we can use a little bit of a more creative player,” Altidore reasoned after the 2016 loss to Seattle. “I think we’re a very good team. But if we have another piece that is creative, whether it be a winger or a creative player that can kind of, on his own, help us decide games as well, that would be great.”

And so Vazquez was signed to be that creative figure, giving Toronto FC the extra dimension in the final third that Altidore spoke about.

There is a clear-headedness to everything TFC have done in recent years, which is in stark contrast to the scattergun, scatterbrain approach of the past. That is illustrated by the strength of their 2017 campaign to date.

infinity (∞), Friday, 8 December 2017 21:02 (eight years ago)

That's nice and all but they've looked the same as last year's playoffs for most of this year's playoffs.
