For my part I just haven't had a chance to watch until just now, but I think in general lots of people care more about the other tournament.

Hell of a goal by Ayala for Paraguay just now, 30+ yards.

Yeah, that goal was really nice

Colombia the first team through to the Quarterfinal with that win. They looked tired towards the end for sure, the game got sort of end-to-end there.

wrt to copa america popularity compared to the euros, well it's style, stars and location i guess
latin american football is pretty different and the players are considered lower tier, with most wanting to make it big in europe; probably because they are bigger markets, so more money
and the euros will start friday with tonnes of star players. i mean just look at germany though they have a lot of older players now as well
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 19:02 (ten years ago)
they have pretty much failed to deliver on the stars that are participating, it's true, although James is kicking ass
I don't agree with the lower level part overall, I mean Bolivia suuuuucks, and never mind Haiti, but there has been some top level play for sure
RIP Haiti btw
― pratt truss it (dan m), Thursday, 9 June 2016 00:51 (ten years ago)
I mean obv with the non-Mexico CONCACAF sides included the level is lower

I have always been slightly put off the copa america by its numbing frequency, but more crucially its not televised much. I watched costa rica - Paraguay this time, but I won't bear a grudge

Wow, great equalizer from Bolivia.

Except for this centenary edition it has been changed to every 4 years since 2007,and will be that way in future (ignoring this tournament).

That was a very soft penalty. MLS refs :/
Bolivia had their chance to equalise tho, jesus.
Chile live to fight another day, theyre not going to do too well this tournament based on what we've seen.
― The Nickelbackean Ethics (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 11 June 2016 01:41 (ten years ago)
Here comes the CONCACAF filth
― pratt truss it (dan m), Saturday, 11 June 2016 01:53 (ten years ago)
on the one hand, it's nice to not watch a complete bus park fest. Panama is obviously raw and lack technical skills but they're fairly good athletes with some speed and sometimes they overachieve through sheer will.
But they're also flop artists and much like Bolivia, their defensive strategy is jumping on opposing players' backs and wailing away.
also lol was that five yellows in fifteen minutes?
p much don't see anybody who's taking down Argentina in this tourney unless Mexico keeps form, but Chile could always regain their form - they just got deflated after the equalizer and were facing a team playing for a draw for 75 of the 90 minutes. Brazil scoring 7 on Haiti is indicative of p much nothing but given who has been bounced already they'll probably go far enough.
lol another yellow
― Neanderthal, Saturday, 11 June 2016 01:58 (ten years ago)
as far as Penedo, I heckle him every time his punk ass comes to Orlando.
$132 might have been worth it to see Messi except what's the point of putting him in if they rack up a multi-goal lead. possibly just to tune him up but they could just as easily do that in the next match.
a lot of money for something that will only occupy two hours of your night
― Neanderthal, Saturday, 11 June 2016 02:00 (ten years ago)
no flow to this shit at all. this is turning into last year's Gold Cup
Godoy deserved that shit. this is goonball, not football.

lol damn. any other famous MLS flameouts that became studs in Europe?
― Neanderthal, Saturday, 11 June 2016 02:14 (ten years ago)
short night for Di Maria
― Neanderthal, Saturday, 11 June 2016 02:16 (ten years ago)
Good question. The immediate name that comes to mind is Bedoya, I remember reading that MLS lowballed him on a contract and he went to Sweden instead, then on to France etc.
― pratt truss it (dan m), Saturday, 11 June 2016 02:21 (ten years ago)
I'm sure there are more. Probably mostly Liga MX players?
― pratt truss it (dan m), Saturday, 11 June 2016 02:22 (ten years ago)
I keep hoping Larin will eventually become the complete package in Orlando but I feel like he's gonna get poached away by Europe long before we'll ever find out.
― Neanderthal, Saturday, 11 June 2016 02:24 (ten years ago)
garbage first half. shoulda saved the Arg-Chile group match for later, just diminishing returns for that group until the elimination round. tho the Chile-Bolivia 2nd half was entertaining and crazy as hell.

chile were late getting to the stadium so the game is delayed lol
― VAR me to the end of yawn (jim in vancouver), Friday, 28 June 2019 22:56 (six years ago)
oh my god, an absolute travesty of a VAR decision overturning a perfectly legal chile goal. i am fucking raging.
― VAR me to the end of yawn (jim in vancouver), Friday, 28 June 2019 23:41 (six years ago)
get VAR to fuck
ok they're VARing another definitely fine goal and if it gets chopped off i am going to literally go insane.
oh and he has, handball. for one of those daft handball nothings (guy had his arm at a 90 degree angle resting on his chest and the ball hit it and his chest without him having any chance to do anything about it

Strange that Argentina was the only team that scored in the quarter finals.
Chile could definitely go all the way. Nobody has been particularly impressive.
― ShariVari, Sunday, 30 June 2019 06:52 (six years ago)
Weird that VAR was relatively unobtrusive in 2018 World Cup and so abysmal this year. Probably due to the terrible 6/1 rule rollout that has every nothing called a handball
― Got your butt drank (Neanderthal), Sunday, 30 June 2019 23:27 (six years ago)
well that was rough.
peru beat chile 3-0 to go through to the final vs brazil (who beat argentina, likely ending lionel messi's chances of ever winning a trophy with argentina).
brazil of course beat peru 5-0 already the tournament, so, not sure the final is going to be a classic.
nice for peru tho, first final since 1975.
― bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 4 July 2019 17:22 (six years ago)
I didn't see this game but I did see Peru v Uruguay last weekend and would never have bet on Peru against Chile after that
