It's fine, they've got two easier games coming up to get the points. Oh.

the other disgrace is the officiating. check out japan's winning penalty decision, complete fucking joke

the discussions, the slanging matches, the banter, the lot (imago), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 08:05 (eleven years ago)

Fun fact: Canada's only competition in bidding for the tournament was Zimbabwe.

was wondering who this sprightly young talent (formiga) bossing the brazil midfield was…she's 37, runs better than any of 'em

the discussions, the slanging matches, the banter, the lot (imago), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 00:50 (eleven years ago)

BBC's alleged full match coverage has felt pretty patchy and hard to follow to me

Twee Speech and Crepey Literalism (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 06:08 (eleven years ago)

Injury time winner for Mexico ruled out, a diabolical decision. Great to see the women's game attaining the same standards as the men's in one area at least.

'come around to your house and fuck your ho' (paraphrase) (Bananaman Begins), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 14:13 (eleven years ago)

this was an ideal opportunity to trial a video review system, not least because female players striving to attain higher standards is one thing, but referees being substandard is entirely another, and completely unacceptable

hell of a free kick

yyyyep

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 11 June 2015 21:20 (eleven years ago)

if you showed someone the first half-hour of this match and then told them it'd be 1-1 on 70 they'd have laughed you out of the room

imago, Thursday, 11 June 2015 21:28 (eleven years ago)

Norway got a lot better at high pressure play in the 2nd. Made the difference, forced errors from Germany.

abcfsk, Thursday, 11 June 2015 21:55 (eleven years ago)

absolute joke of a non-penalty there

imago, Thursday, 11 June 2015 22:33 (eleven years ago)

yes!!! hurrah!

imago, Thursday, 11 June 2015 23:47 (eleven years ago)

china smash into netherlands for 90 minutes without scoring, cue pass of the tournament

imago, Thursday, 11 June 2015 23:47 (eleven years ago)

ok that is the worst goal of all time

imago, Friday, 12 June 2015 00:34 (eleven years ago)

then a nice goal from CIV

but if that third Thai goal ends up the winner then idk

imago, Friday, 12 June 2015 00:47 (eleven years ago)

sheesh, the ending

fucking abysmal match obv but quite exciting, the winning goal surely will go down in history as one of the great sporting crimes

imago, Friday, 12 June 2015 00:58 (eleven years ago)

i went and saw china play netherlands this afternoon. great!

i saw canada and new zealand with heavy rain falling, lightning in the vicinity, game postponed. there was a lot of muttering in the stands at the end, "there's like... ten minutes overtime, then it goes to a shootout-- wait, it's over!?" booing everytime the referees did anything. mass confusion about why the goal was not allowed.

dylannn, Friday, 12 June 2015 07:34 (eleven years ago)

didn't see that game so I dunno why the goal was disallowed, these first matches are in a mini-league so they won't go to penalties, that happens once you're into the knockout section

Twee Speech and Crepey Literalism (Noodle Vague), Friday, 12 June 2015 10:22 (eleven years ago)

disallowed for offside, one of the rare occasions they've gotten an offside call right

imago, Friday, 12 June 2015 11:31 (eleven years ago)

I was in the stands for Germany/Norway and Thailand/Cd'I yesterday. Côte must have been cursed. I think they hit the post at least three times? Our section of the crowd was definitely favouring them. Lots of booing and muttering at how many Thai players were letting themselves be carried off on stretchers once Thailand had the lead.

jmm, Friday, 12 June 2015 12:52 (eleven years ago)

I won money on the thailand win so yeah. Odds at 6.10 or something

abcfsk, Friday, 12 June 2015 14:37 (eleven years ago)

this tournament is being ruined by these referees

imago, Friday, 12 June 2015 23:32 (eleven years ago)

if they weren't female I'd make a joke about them being MLS refs

dan m, Saturday, 13 June 2015 03:45 (eleven years ago)

Man, fuck a rest day.

'come around to your house and fuck your ho' (paraphrase) (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 14 June 2015 09:36 (eleven years ago)

A lot of what's going on in terms of officiating is just mystifying.

The ref blowing the whistle for full time in AUS-NGA at about 91:15 when the board had already gone up for four additional minutes? Ok, it was 2-0... if there'd been only one goal in it surely there'd be some kind of official protest.

With the games on so late and some of them only available on the BBC Sport app, I find myself falling asleep with my tablet next to me in bed, waking up not sure if I dreamt certain incidents. Very pleased to see that Jeon Gaeul's peach of a glancing header for KOR was actually real.

Michael Jones, Monday, 15 June 2015 11:17 (eleven years ago)

CIV get goal of the tournament so far, holy shit

imago, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:29 (eleven years ago)

What a screamer.

Michael Jones, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:30 (eleven years ago)

ok this is the first time two potential crackers have been on simultaneously, starting w/ netherlands/canada but this could change

imago, Monday, 15 June 2015 23:31 (eleven years ago)

another fucking awful decision, this time on nz

trying to keep the ball in the corner when you're 3 goals up in injury time = pure, pure savagery. the true heart of this usa team revealed

dan m, Monday, 6 July 2015 00:55 (ten years ago)

was kinda boggling at that xxp

5-2 is a scoreline which resonates down the ages and is probably a reasonable summation of the game, in that it followed the pattern of every first-half bloodbath ever

Reasonable damage limitation effort from Japan, after beig 4 down in fifteen minutes, but Jesus, those fifteen minutes...

Can't understand how a team with that sort of experience, full of world cup winners and olympic finalists can possibly freeze like that. Wouldn't be too surprised if it comes out that there was some Ronaldo-in-1998 type clusterfuck prior to the game.

three weeks pass...

on sunday i went to a national women's soccer league game. it was really fun, plus much better quality than the majority of the world cup games that i caught on tv. Seattle Reign v Portland Thorns, so a derby game. world cup winner megan rapinoe plays for seattle, christine sinclair was up front for portland. $15 a ticket, so economical. a franchise record attendance of over 6000 were there. the crowd contrasted with most men's sporting events you'd go to in that it's mainly women, families, and there's lots of gay couples. nice change from the rowdy-hetero-bro vibe. 3-0 win for Seattle, i managed to miss the final 2 goals waiting to buy kettle-corn :/ but for sure would attend regularly if i lived in a city with a team, maybe they'll expand to vancouver one day.

corbyn's gallus (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 30 July 2015 20:21 (ten years ago)

I've been to a few Chicgo Red Stars games, otm as far as crowd composition, but less ppl overall at their games. Christen Press is a great player, and Julie Johnson in defense is like retroactively awesome bc the games I went to were all pre World Cup.

ive reddit all your posts and I want a crowdfund (dan m), Friday, 31 July 2015 07:56 (ten years ago)
