the other side of ferguson's lack of time for essentially unserious teams is his real football man fondness for landfill like moyes and allardyce, and his biddable proteges like mcleish with a similar disdain for the notion that football is an entertaiment

Looks like Southampton's Head of Recruitment, Paul Mitchell, has resigned and there's a lot of noise about him heading to White Hart Lane, which suggests this might be the end of Baldini?

for a notably large human being fazio does seem to be sort of inconspicuous, just vaguely lingering around the edges of things, always silent, sometimes glowering, nobody is clear what he is supposed to be ddoing

ITV is reporting that it is being orchestrated by phone from the Partizan support but I can't really see how they can know that.
The fans haven't been dangerous, just your standard exhibitionists, but it is odd.
Players coming back out now.

― Matt DC, Friday, 28 November 2014 12:36 (eleven years ago)
Is there a suggestion that Spurs knew this would happen - with pitch invaders getting selfies with players while wearing sponsor's brand? It takes *way* too long for a steward to appear on the pitch.

Assou-Ekotto has had a chequered career in English football and has fallen out with a number of Spurs managers since his arrival from Lens in 2006 for a reported £3.5million.
He has a particularly difficult relationship with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and the pair have rarely agreed on various matter since his move to White Hart Lane.
He fell out with Tottenham earlier this year after it emerged that he had invited anti-Semitic comedian Dieudonne M’bala M’bala to a game at Tottenham, insisting he would ‘love it’.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is being paid £40,000 a week by Tottenham despite not playing for the first team for more than 18 months.

the assumption was that he has been excluded because his endlessly reiterated claims about his attitude to football lead to him being considered a bad influence around the periphery of a squad
even though apart from that his commitment has never seemed particularly below par really?
the intimation that levy is playing a part in that after the dieudonné affair is interesting although unfalsifiable
unlike various other indiscretions by careless or thick players, he seems fairly sharp so it's reasonable to presume that he was aware of the antisemitic elements (not even a backstory but integral to his act)
― Enterprise Lesotho (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 24 December 2014 17:17 (eleven years ago)
He'd already been farmed out to QPR by the time he started pulling this shit so my guess would be he knows exactly what he's doing (and that it's basically out out spite).
Otherwise he was prone to lapses of concentration but no more so than most other fullbacks we've had, although unless I'm mistaken Redknapp is the only club manager to ever have particularly rated him, or to have got reasonably consistent performances out of him.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 December 2014 18:12 (eleven years ago)
a bit moreso than a lot of others but he was a lot better going fwd. agreed on redknapp turning him into a good performer there albeit briefly
― local eire man (darraghmac), Wednesday, 24 December 2014 19:09 (eleven years ago)
“He’s been up and down. I don’t think he’s found the level he had at Tottenham,” said Redknapp.
“I was watching a bit of the 2010 season on Sky, it just happened to come on.
“It was Benoit playing for Tottenham, going down the left and crossing balls – he crossed one and funny enough Niko scored.
“For me he was in the best three left-backs in the Premier League when he was at Tottenham. I don’t think he’s quite reached the heights, but let’s hope that in the play-offs he’ll be a big player for us."
“I think he’s found the change between the Premier League and Championship difficult.”

Well, last night was a lot of fun
― groovypanda, Friday, 2 January 2015 08:43 (eleven years ago)
that was a great game alright. early days yet but kane is like the berba that actually works off the ball. hes certainly exciting to watch. i was impressed by chadli and rose too. i watched spurs against leicester and couldnt believe that it was the same team yesterday. chelsea looked a bit sluggish, the goals they got were all down to woeful errors from spurs players too. maybe lack of rotation is starting to catch up on chelsea.
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:27 (eleven years ago)
there is not even the remotest comparison to berbatov technically
― tone pulising (nakhchivan), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:30 (eleven years ago)
Kane is enthusiastic, awkward, audacious. but he is not as good as defending in the premier league has made him look of late- anyone running at a centre back at all seems to look like fuckin Rinaldo these days. Paul McGrath would have had him subbed of at halftime tbh.
but I love him. rather than berba I'd say he's akin to a peter crouch that has realised and is playing very well within his rather strange collection of physical attributes.
― local eire man (darraghmac), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:32 (eleven years ago)
theres always so much shit written about these players, technically he is quite limited, the way he runs with his head down and tries to trap the ball is fairly inept compared to a serious player like sturridge, sterling or even barkley
that isn't to say he can't be a good player but there is a ceiling to how good a slowish centre forward with that level of core technique can be, and it's closer to jame beattie than to berbatov
― tone pulising (nakhchivan), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:40 (eleven years ago)
I'd agree with that
he can surprise defenders and goalkeepers with what hes willing to try given his ability, his main outstanding point atm is p unshakeable confidence that he can take on and beat high level defenders, self fulfilling prophecy that I fear will only take him so far. but great to watch for now.
― local eire man (darraghmac), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:44 (eleven years ago)
same shit as last year when people got upset about andros townsend being described as not a very good player 15 months ago on the occasion of his previous epl goal, since when he has had the second worst conversion rate in the league
GET INVOLVED - will Liverpool win the Premiership 2013/14?
― tone pulising (nakhchivan), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:46 (eleven years ago)
thing is I like these guys in the squad as long as the hype machine doesnt make them discontent with being second, maybe third choice.
but bentaleb, walker, caulker and prob livermore as legit if not more so first team contenders/squad members than Kane and certainly Townsend.
great to see a core of youth players being accommodated by a coach willing to suit tactics to those available (or get players to play within a tactic? idk). refreshing after avbs inflexibility, arrys wastage of talent that wouldn't go down the dogs with him, etc
― local eire man (darraghmac), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:51 (eleven years ago)
yeah all of those are useful, caulker as a cb perhaps has the highest ceiling if he keeps developing, perhaps to the level of lescott who was an important player in manchester citys first title
walker a bit of an outlier because he has plenty of natural talent but probably not coachable much beyond his current level
― tone pulising (nakhchivan), Friday, 2 January 2015 18:55 (eleven years ago)
yeah I wondered if you'd rip any of em a new one for the mention but there is or was a higher level of potential in any of em than there is in Kane in the long run I think, if only because the bar for success in an attacking position must needs be far higher than the livermorean skillset of "has shoulders will travel" kind of thing.

― tone pulising (nakhchivan), Friday, 2 January 2015 19:04 (eleven years ago)
there's a thread in it I think
I'd put him alongside that Thompson guy was a contemporary of Murphy gerrard iirc at Liverpool, or idk jody morris, or jamie o'hara? the type of player who pulls an unlikely feat of technique out of somewhere every now and again but would really need astonishing levels of consistency and application to make up for the lack of physical attributes or straight up glamour required to get beyond squad level.
idk Everton make good use of the type so I'm all for us not spending paulinho money on replacing him or anything.

caulker hatched as a fully-formed middling-to-dece 26 yo and will remain that way until football has forgotten him
he may or may not be installed at other clubs in this time but this occurence will not come as a result of any improvement, deterioration or variation in his play
