Anyone read this article about Hodgson's time in Norway. Its Pretty funny.
“There are three categories of players. The first one are top class. You admire them. They will win you trophies. In the middle you find normal players. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. In the last category you find players you really dislike. They are shit and don't give you anything. And Bjørn Berland, you are in the last category.”

A friend of mine who works for Fulham remembers Hodgson being incredibly foul mouthed and ragey. One half time he just told the players DO WHAT YOU LIKE IN THE SECOND HALF THAT CUNT STEPHEN KELLY HAS FUCKED IT.
Lichtsteiner is such a wank.

"If you are an England player, you do have to accept you wear two hats," added the former Fulham, Liverpool and West Brom boss. "You have got to be prepared to leave one hat at home and put the other hat on. If you can't do that you are never going to be any good for me as an England player.
"We can't demand they wear those hats when they go back to their clubs. We have to quite happily accept when they have done their 10 days with us, they put that hat away and they put a new one on. This is about England and my job now is to do my job for England."

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Southampton), Joe Hart (Manchester City).
Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).
Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Fabian Delph (Aston Villa), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Manchester City), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).
Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal).
That collection of defenders in particular is laughable as is the paucity of alternatives.

don't know why Hodgson thinks that negging Alli is a good thing
― disco Polo (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 26 March 2016 09:04 (eight years ago) link
Was he?
Read somewhere that Wayne Rooney has started running again this week. Didn't see it mentioned whether it was for the first time in ten years or what did they mean.
― Ecomigrant gnomics (darraghmac), Saturday, 26 March 2016 14:55 (eight years ago) link
Assuming Wilshere is going to be injured 90% of the time, and Carrick is too old and slow, then Alli is probably the only realistic choice for a deep-lying playmaker role, assuming Hodgson was to go with one. But I can't see that being the best use of him given that his supply line to Kane has been so productive all season. That role might be more of an option with Vardy in the side, although I'm guessing he'll be the impact sub to take advantage of tiring defenders.
I'm not sure I know what England's best XI looks like that this stage, although it probably doesn't involve Rooney. There are several very good English players to have emerged since the last World Cup so a creditable QF exit should be within reach, but any of the conceivable CB pairings look a long way short of international standard.
Even allowing for the patchiness of the squad and Sterling being injured, surely there has to be a better right-sided option than Danny Welbeck?
I haven't seen or heard too much of him this season, but how has Henderson being doing?

You wouldn't bet against Germany scoring with any of their attacks and the centre backs and keepers have been dodgy but this has been a really good performance from England irrespective of what happens in the last ten minutes. They look faster and more creative with Alli, Kane and Welbeck than I can recall seeing them in a long time. Putting Rooney back in to gum up the works would be criminal.

Putting Rooney back into the team would be an act of wanton vandalism at this stage, to the extent that I'm actually wondering if it will even happen. In general, there was a distinct lack of the kind of surliness you used to get from England players, a sense that this group actually want to play for England. The problem is that expectations were relatively low and will now be ratcheted up in the usual tedious way, probably getting to a few of them. OTOH most of them seem like a decent crop of kids, personality-wise, so maybe that won't happen.
Hodgson has been extremely fortunate to have had both Pochettino and Klopp managing in the Premiership at the same time, with a couple of players who have been managed by both. It means that there's a ready-made footballing philosophy that can be imported wholesale. There's a decent argument to be made for building the midfield entirely out of Spurs and Liverpool players because they'll outrun most teams at the tournament - getting through England's midfield could be a lot more difficult than its been for a while. It'll need to be because the defence looks really suspect.
The movement and interplay in advanced positions was better than I've seen from England in a very long time, refreshing to see an England team not just chugging up and down the field in tramlines. The lol golden generation contained several very good players but it wasn't overburdened with pace, so that's another thing this lot have in their favour.
Sterling and Sturridge might yet come into the equation (a fully-fit Sturridge is still England's best striker, although Kane is gaining ground), but it's very difficult to see a serious argument to be made for including the likes of Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Townsend and Ashley Young.

yeah mostly otm. there is still going to be a tedious pundits and old lags debate about Rooney from now until the tournament, Hodgson shd get it over with and announce his absence from the squad now just for the lulz/clarity
